I’m watching your barrel bin with anticipation as I am building one now for my red wiggling friends. Looks wonderful and quite prolific. I am learning a lot from you and others and loving it 😍. Thanks for bringing us along with your hard work to take garbage from going to a landfill and making an organic worm cast to reclaim soils.

It is amazing. I am usually at about 10 pounds of food a week go to the worms from my family and friends.

I like that you sifted out some of the castings in the beginning. I can’t get over around 10 lbs of worms in big blue 😮 I like the tip about having separate bedding bins to not mix different worms together.

You mentioned using "prepared bedding." What is significant about that other than shredded cardboard? Thanks for your help and encouragement.
@PlantObsessed3 жыл бұрын
Prepared bedding is sort of pre composted to make it easy for the worms to consume. By adding water and a nitrogen source like kelp meal or molasses the good bacteria can get started breaking down the fiber.

Good idea to have different pre-made bedding supplies on hand, I often worry that I'm inadvertently transferring blue worms into bedding I might use in the red/ENC bins. I might start keeping two containers of it so I won't worry. Thanks!
@PlantObsessed3 жыл бұрын
I have learned the hard way. For most of my bins it is not a problem as they are all mixed.

Good call on skipping a feeding. Curious why you don’t put the leftovers from the sifting back into the blue bin?

I forgot to do it on camera. They all ended in the bin before I shut off the light. :)

do you still find it helpful to have a nursery? what is the benefit of having a separate bin vs just putting the cocoons and babies back into a larger bin?
@PlantObsessed3 жыл бұрын
Yes I have gone back to having a nursery. The babies can be left in peace to grow.

Yes my helper noticed a whole in the fabric cover on the list worm bin. And it was very small. Wonder if my mice went in and out that little hole or if the mouse just stayed and gorged out. Not sure how I am going to cover the two bins. It larger bin has been emptied as well I so appreciate your help I'm going to order some more worms and I wondering if you have advice on where to order them I'm going to do red wigglers this time again I noticed both eBay and Esty
@PlantObsessed3 жыл бұрын
My first worms were from Uncle jims. You cannot count on one species when you order from them. My most recent experience was Northeast worms. They were good healthy worms and good customer service. He has a youtube channel too.

Nature at its best ... rat attack and worms eaten (we live less than a block away from twelve grain silos and elevator) but our worms go to full breeding mode to repopulate!!!! Jimmy Cagney said it best " Take that you dirty rat!!! " LOL

Have worms. 1 lb was listed to hold 1000 worms. Is that your understanding
@PlantObsessed3 жыл бұрын
Depends on the worm size. ANC no not 1000 due to large size . Red wiggler yes. ENC maybe less than 1000 same reason as ANC.
