When I got into plants I went crazy and had to have all the plants. Then I completely ran out of room and it was so overwhelming keeping up with the care that I have been slowly trimming down my collection to only plants that I really love and focusing my energy on growing out those plants

As an avid orchid grower, I can understand the 'meh' with respect to the supermarket phalaenopsis, but the wider family has a vast array of forms & colours (leaves & blooms)... and scents - don't write them all off.

I adore Cymbidiums! I have too many Phalaenopsis orchids and they aren't "meh" to me. I do love them, they are all pushing up flower spikes now, but if I could get Cymbidiums to thrive in my home, I would have them everywhere! My best friend lives in So Cal, US, and grows them as foundation plants. There was an orchid house in my area, so I have owned many other varieties, Vanda, Oncidium, Paphiopedilum, to name a few, and I murdered them all, poor things!, which I find so puzzling, because I own some very difficult Aroids that grow great guns for me. I'm bewildered!

I probably haven't taken the time to properly get to know them cause I'm so put off by the supermarket ones. One of my friends has a bat flower orchid which is pretty cool, and very different. Who knows, maybe I'll delve into the orchid world at some point 😂

As an avid Miss Orchid Girl watcher I was bound to get obsessed with non phalaenopsis orchids at some point. (I've seen too many phalaenopsis chuz my mom ONLY had those. Like, 15 of them). I especially enjoy Phychopis and Arachnis Orchids!! They are just GORGEOUS! I have 16 different orchids now, and I only have 1 phalaenopsis (the shilleriana, I love the mottled leaves).

every sensitive fern i had , it died when i brought it home, so i chopped the stems and it regrew and it was fine. Ferns are sensitive to change in environment however their roots are extremely resistant. Which means when environment changes, they kill off the stems and stay dormant for a bit, then they regrow adapted to the new environment. That can even happen when you move it to a different spot in your home.

@@kayciblizzard2742 when it comes to plants one thing I've learnt in general is to never throw away a plant even if all the foliage is dead. I only call the plant dead after I do a root inspection 1 week after the loss of foliage. If after 1 week the roots are still alive I give it another chance to regrow. If after 1 month nothing regrew and the roots are dead then I throw it. 70% of my plants survived full loss of foliage.

Happiest day in my plant collecting life was when I realized that very few plants give me real joy like vines do and so I dont have to keep anything but my vines (and my whale fins). I got rid of many plants and focused on my vine collection. Its so freeing to realize that loving plants doesnt mean you have to keep or own every single plant. It doesnt have to make sense to anyone else but you.

I am a retired Interior Designer. When I worked with clients I helped them come to know their personal style. Most people know some things they like, but a deep dive reveals more. You are loving a neutral backdrop. In design, we often create a neutral backdrop, accented with bright or colorful accents. This scheme replicates nature, but when we create a special space for ourselves it reflects current passion. This can change over time. Let your development come in a natural flow. Some individuals do not ever change. This is as it should be. Don't question it!

Yep, the fern is likely still fine if the roots aren't doing anything weird - they're great at dropping all of their leaves and then pushing new ones better suited to the new environment. Plenty of people throw Maidenhairs out, for example, when really they need to be chopped back to soil level and left. It's likely just it's reaction to the change in environment. Good luck

Absolutely agree with your comment on the ferns. The Pteris type ferns need to be chopped back to thrive. I have two different types of maidenhair that threw a tantrum when brought back inside for the winter, but once I chopped them back, they rewarded me with new, beautiful, delicate growth. They now live in my humidity cabinet and look soooo good!

Hi Claire love your channel and content. I'm in Melbourne, Australia and grow my plants indoors in winter and outdoors under a green house in summer. I too have struggled with ferns, some are semi aquatic which no one talks about. Chop off the dead fronds, enclose it in a plastic bag to keep high humidity in a warm sunny area, and when it starts to sprout place it on a saucer where you can keep it moist all the time. Good luck

Ive had vegetable gardens, huge collections of orchids, then tropical outdoor plants & everything in between, but I’ve never had nothing but indoor plants. I killed my favourite beautiful maidenhair fern 3 times. It was a plant for 2 weeks. Last summer I've tried a fourth one. It started to dry out like others. But this time I wanted to figure out how in the world... I've watched so many videos. And 2 videos were my key to a beautiful plant. First one said, fern gets new growth. It needs SUN!!! No halfsun half shadow half anything. It needs light, bright light. Second video was from India after monsumrain. Woman collected fern with roots out of the fern-wall. She left all of them over night in a small vase with water, to plant them in soil by the next day. Some of this plants didn't reach the water just a night long, were dried out immediately. No humidity in the vase safed them. Plants get water over their roots - point. So my conclusion was: try to water it each day. Et voilà, my plant became so huge since last summer. Bright light + water each day (now in the winter every second, don't wait longer) = magnificent maidenhair fern.

Claire, I’m definitely on the same page with you regarding staying away from adding colorful plants and l my collection. I love the natural patterns and diverse variations of green plants. I like the jungle vibe, and uniqueness of leaf structure. Insofar as what I’m avoiding, moving forward it will be ANYthing that attracts thrips and other pests. I’m staying away from plants that are difficult to keep alive - it’s like throwing money down the drain when I could’ve invested in a plant with staying power!😅 If I’m calling out specific varieties, no more syngoniums, they bore me nowadays despite the variations. Also avoiding Verucossum type plants, and anything with thin leaves (almost always temperamental with light and water requirements). I’m also pretty much committed to WAITING it out for a few months to see if I really want to add a specific plant to my collection, and allowing the price to decrease - it ALWAYS does plant people!

@@lindaschad9734ill try and cover my care techniques… I am not an expert by any means. This is what works for me. I use a super chunky mix and water thoroughly when completely dry. I wait for the leaves to curl slightly before watering. I find this is tricky though. If I wait too long I lose a couple of leaves from letting the plant dry out too much 😕. I also put them in bright indirect light. I have three large trebuii moonlights. Two are beside east facing windows and the third is near a south facing. I do not supplement humidity and they seem to tolerate that well. I water with liquid seaweed (blue plant from Amazon) and fertilize a couple times per year with slow release osmocote.

I much prefer green foliage plants (anthuriums, alocasia and monstera are my 💚's) and only have a couple of colourful ones (dahlias outside) I think it's a very good way to view things only hanging on to plants that bring joy and that you love and letting other people take over ones that weren't meeting that need in you. It's hard to put a black and white description for it but I feel a kind of 'rapport' with my fav ones. Moving forward for the most part is considered progress. There are many plants I admire in someone else’s home, however, I know those plants are not right for me. 😊 We’ve all had plants that no longer bring us joy and that’s okay. I completely agree around the treubii moonlight. I got a 2 leaf cutting and it's been unfurling the 3rd leaf for months. I just put it in with my exotica so I don't forget about it as much. I've combined a lot of plants in the last couple of months such as a couple of Epipremnum (aureum, neon, Pinnatum, marble queen) and heart leaf Philodendron (scandens, brasil, micans lime) and Syngonium (albo, mojito, Ngern lai ma) and that helps with keeping the care down while still owning more species. And I love the variety in one pot. Especially when it's the same leaf shape in different colours/patterns. Also had a lot of Tradescantia when I started and now I only have one that soon will be moving to a friend. That was totally a fase. Now I am in the velvet Philodendron fase and slowly getting into Anthurium but I don't want a cabinet so that keeps the options limited. Some plants I really like when I see them around but I just don't feel the desire to have them. And sometimes I give in and buy them and end up giving them away..

I have to say I do it, but I wish people didn’t gift plants to me. I don’t like succulents very much, nor orchids (which like me, but I don’t care for them) but here we are. I swear if anyone ever does the “ha ha always give that person a flamingo for their yard” (give her another orchid?) I’ll start giving them away. Houseplants are a passion that only the home owner should pick out? It’s like no one should buy another adult (capable one) clothes. Love your honesty.

I used to have a Pretty Turtle, and I truly loved it, but didn't have the right environment for it to live, the whole streptocarpus family are wonderful, just hard to keep alive (for me). Well done that you kept it alive and you mum enjoys it, glad you could pass it along.

It felt so good to hear that other people also have plants that bring them no joy after buying them. I felt like such a horrid plant mum!! On another note, could you please tell me how the predatory mites work for the spider mites? Xx I've got an outdoor lilac that keeps getting them constantly and spraying it down with neem oil and horticultural soap isnt doing it much good, even now when it's got no leaves!! Would you reccomend the predatory mites? Where could I purchase some? Xx thank you so much!

Good evening, thanks a lot for your videos. I am excited about them. As for the first fern, I had it almost dead, tho I was doing every possible thing from humidity to keeping soil moist indirect sun shine.. and I was about to throw it away. Until I accidentally decided to give it a chance and put it in a glass jar (vase) covered with transparent nylon cover . It's thriving thankfully, it has been a year now. If you like it, give it a try. :) ;)

Thanks for being so real. For me, it’s the spider plant. To me, it’s just funky grass that hates me anyway haha. I understand not liking delicate looking leaves. I describe them as papery leaves, like some begonias. That being said, I adore my coleus!!! If you want to try a plant that hits the greenery and color mark, coleus is your friend. They need high light and you can grow them in water culture. Sometimes having colored plants is about plant-styling rather than fitting into the plant collection as a whole. I’ve never owned a fern, never saw the appeal of having them inside. But I’m really happy other people so, because I’ve learned about so many different types of ferns! If you want to try a different kind of orchid, try a bulbophyllum. I have a nanouk. I love it, but they don’t age very well.

Give the gold dust croton a chance 🙃 I'm a fan of the orange and reds.... but I love green and yellow! I have 1 caladium, the mojito... it's beautiful but I can't keep it happy unless it's in an enclosed terrarium. At some point soon its going to out grow the container it's currently in. Not sure what I'll do with it. 🤷🏽‍♀️ I'll never own another nerve plant, maranta, calathea, fern or ivy. Happy new year!!!

I absolutely love my Calathea orbifolia, it was the first plant I adopted after a very long time of plant absence. About three years into growing my orbifolia, I needed to repot it. I thought I had killed it, it did not like the repot. It eventually bounced back. A couple more years pass and my plant is huge! I decided to divide and repot. 😱 Each of my plants went down to one measly stalk, talking about a drama queen…this plant is it! It is finally starting to bounce back yet again and have at least 4 to 5 stalks in the plants…what have been your experiences or tips for repotting and or diving this plant? It’s one of my favorites but I dread repotting.

I tried doing the same and it attracted a lot of flies. It was nasty, especially because it's a balcony garden. Had to remove top soil and add new ones. Stopped using rice water after that. Only reuse spoiled milk, that too after diluting it.

Oh I know what you mean about some of these plants! I have several Hoyas that I have decided just aren’t for me. They grow sooooooooo slowly! I have a Mathilde, (her name is Matilda), and she had one tiny leaf when I bought her. That was last Summer. She just grew two more leaves, FINALLY! I was so excited, but I know it’ll be quite some time before she grows more.😢

I have an aversion to really colorful plants as well. I wonder if it has something to do with the bright colors of poisonous things in nature that puts us off on a subconscious level. Also, I will add I was on the same page with my Scindapsus Moonlight. I sold one and then later decided to try again because I do love the color. The second one I purchased does not stop growing. I have three or four new leaves coming out at any given time and had to re-pot it 2 months ago to try and get it to slow down, which it has a bit.

How do you hold a plant that has spider mites so close to you and be calm? That’s so amazing. I see one spider mite on one plant and I won’t touch any of the plants in that whole section. And I inform my family not to even graze them in fears of transmitting some to other unaffected areas. Talk about paranoid 😅😂

I'm also so over phalaenopsis orchids. Mine grow ok & flower regularly, but I've realised that flowering plants really just don't do it for me, I also much prefer green plants. Other than that there aren't many plants I won't try again. That being said my collection is currently in the "rapidly expanding" phase. 😅

I also tend to stick to very green plants with variations or unique patterns but I do own a few dark purple (Oxalis triangularis), reddish coloured plants (philodendron prince or orange, ficus elastica ruby) or black coloured (philodendron black cardinal, ficus elastica burgundy)… I am also inheriting a croton for outside on my patio but I absolutely adore the extreme colouring in the leaves. But definitely focus more on my green leaves…

Ugh the plant I don't think I would try again is the beautiful velvet jungle (I believe it was called ), it did soooo well for the first few months, then I think I made the mistake of moving her and it all went down from there, no matter what I did, nothing helped bring her back. And it was an absolute fav. Mayyyyyybe I might try again, but I highly doubt it. It killed me inside to watch her die ! But I would like to add, for beginners a good plant that I think is under rated is the Philo Birkin . One of the easiest I have.

There is nothing offensive in this video. I have experienced some of the plants you mentioned. Yes you are right. I agree with your assessment. For the ferns, wow, I have never seen a bamboo fern. I notice they love acid soil. Since we have acid soil, I'd like to try it. So in a sense, you did an advertisement for some of the plants. I think you should feel free to share a longer list, your problems with these plants. I think it will be very helpful and popular.

Sometimes it's hard to explain why you don't like a certain plant. Some really grab you and some don't. I bought a stromanthe triostar (?) on a whim and gave it away soon after. The leaves were pretty but the plant as a whole wasn't. I don't give plants as gifts anymore. I was given a Christmas cactus 2 years ago that I am stuck with even though I don't like it. I'd hate to hurt feelings. Thanks for your videos!

Hi Claire love love your channel, I’ve started To make quite a few hanging pots as you do. Great idea and they look so nice. I have a question..I noticed when I water them especially the hanging ones as the macromae is Criss crossed at the bottom it soaks halfway up the pot so the outside of the rope looks stained from the water I think going up if that makes sense. Does that happen to you or do you have any suggestions to avoid that because then the pot looks a bit dirty at the bottom third thanks again
