Plastering textures for interior walls, Plaster knockdown dash.
Plaster master matching any interior texture.
How to match interior textures.
Have you ever heard folks brag that they can make "Every patch a perfect match?" This is nonsense. No one can do that, but we can be close to it with time in and a bit of imagination.
For immediate bids, send pictures to Jay or myself at our sites below.
www.StuccoPlas... Kirk’s website.
www.GiordanoPl... Jason’s Website.
Howdy, ambitious subscriber. We’re sharing some knowledge about Interior plaster finishes and how to match them.
You, too, can learn to match most interior textures or finishes, as this is your guild.
Folks’ texture on interior walls is endless, as plasterers relied on skills and imagination to be creative for 50 to 150 years.
I was lucky to be called to match something creative with this interior patchwork, but it was easy.
Drywall was invented in the UK, of course, between 1920 and 1930.
But, as usual, it made its way to the USA around 1950.
Most finishes were smooth or skip-troweled as they were easy ones to apply.
Before drywall became widely used, building interiors were made of plaster. For hundreds of years, walls and ceilings have been constructed by placing layers of wet plaster over thousands of wooden strips called wooden cedar laths.
All it takes to match any plaster finish is practice, and then soon, you can create your own interior plaster finishes just using your imagination.

• Plastering over sheetr... Lime-based cement coat with finish over sheetrock.
• Interior Lime plasteri... Interior lime plastering.
• Exterior color finish ... Veneer lime plaster.
Thanks for watching.

This is just what I needed to see. I am repairing the front wall of our church's sanctuary where everyone looks. The building is over 90 years old and the particular wall has been worked on many times. I found that the flashing had been the problem all along (roofers laid the shingles over the headwall flashing). Now that it has been corrected I'm fixing the cracks. The previous workers used everything from metal mesh to drywall tape to bridge the gaps, but with the roof always leaking, there was no end. I called it the 'forever wall' because someone always seemed to be working on it. Your videos are a great help. Much appreciated.

Great videos. wish i would have seen this method before i started my garage conversion project. ive done four walls and a ceiling, 24 ft by 12 ft by 10 feet high all with a knockdown finish applied purely by hand. A sprayer would have been better but now ive got a hand applied finish that i can be proud of.

Hi Kirk, Thanks for all you teach us sir. This is so Very good. Learned a lot on this one. I have to match this pattern at that same 100 year old customers house only over tuck pointed brick exterior walls. Rapid Set Mortar is where I started with the tuck pointing, I have Diamond Veneer basecoat next, however in my practicing of the DV Finish coat.....man that stuff hard for me to work with unless I am missing something. It’s like I need a set control agent, but Home Depot only sells those packets for Rapid Set products. I do not want to use gypsum based on the exterior walls as the previous fix was dissolved right off the wall by a small roof leak. I’m trying to make it like it was when it started instead of using these chalk products that dissolve with water. I read on the finish coat diamond veneer that there is a set control that I can use so I can work with it for a longer period time. Can the diamond veneer finish coat be used for this kind of pattern example as easily you you are showing here?

Happy New Year Mike, Try using the 60 or 90-minute Joint Compounds. 60 minutes compounds means, you have 60-minutes to apply it before it gets hard and so on. USG Easy Sand Joint Compound Or Westpac’s Fast Set Joint Compound, they are both okay to use. In fact, I can't tell the difference, surely one is sold at your neighborhood hardware store. Ya gotta read the whole question. I know how to use tape mud in all of its forms. It’s very easy and requires very low skill. Lime based is not as you know. The exterior inside walls must look like knock down dash, but be cement like the rest of the house built in STL 100 years ago.

Great video as always. Your comment at the end, about how the old texture is smoother than the new due to about 15 coats of paint. Is it typical for the new plaster and texture, even once primed and painted, to look slightly rougher in a 90-100 year old house due to the layers of paint?
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 10 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve Franks, Yes and No. A skilled applicator will say after his repair, prime and paint and it should match as close as possible, as this skilled person will match the original, but just a bit rougher so that when you apply a prime and paint it should technically match. A handy man, or a fella who habit is of low self esteem combined with inexperience will make excuses such as "well the rest of the house has 10 or more coats of paint in the last 100 years so I can't match it any better.) And yes, I have failed a few times myself and this is how we learn to look closely at what we were trying to achieve. Best wishes, Kirk & Jason Giordano's DIY plastering network

Hey, Kirk watch your videos all the time. I am learning a lot from you. I am a retired patchman. The plasterers that taught me used to set the strucctolite with ground gypsum. That gives a lot of open time about 4 hrs. we added the ground gypsum on the mortar board as we goso you could go 4 hours. and yet have the plaster set right away. Why is that not a good method?
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 5 жыл бұрын
Howdy John, that's an excellent method. Another Ancient Chinese Secret would be to set Structo-lite in ten minutes would be to add just a handful of cement plaster, instant set time if you add the right amount. Actually, my boys from the UK, told me this secret long ago as UK plasters are the best in the world. @@jacksmurr585 as soon as the structo-lite drys you can, as Structo-lite is a mixture of different things mainly gypsum technically your not supposed to mix Gupsum’s with Lime plasters. Here’s a fact of life most stucco and or plastering contractors do. I simply apply a bonding agent over the gypsum, now it’s acceptable. Quickcret, sells their bonding agent for about 10 bucks, cheap insurance.

Hi Kirk. I have a 1950s house where one or 2 rooms have this texture... And I'm interested in sanding it down so it's more of a knock down type finish. Can this be sanded? Would it require a grinder? Do I need to soak and scrape? Thanks, I appreciate it!
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering Жыл бұрын
Howdy Ben, depends on the material used, if it's painted it's best to just reskim. If it's raw try a wet towel, wiping it, if that smooths it out, that means it's gypsum based. If it's lime based wetting it won't do anything.👨🏻‍🔬

in some of your videos you use a conditioner that is in a spray bottle. I live in Olympia WA. and I have called around asking for a lath conditioner. all i can find is plaster weld. What do you use for a lath conditioner that will work in a spray bottle? thank you. Matthew.
@StuccoPlastering

Evening Matthew Mullinnix, actually Jason sometimes uses the spray bottle to spray on the plaster weld which we use to bond interior plaster when patching or the weld create to spay on the exterior walls which we need for extra bonding, both of these bonding products are made by Larson's. By the way Lowe's and home depot also carry simalar bonding products by different name. These spray bottles I buy from westside building materials. Best wishes, kirk and family

BUT , even though Im VERY appreciative of the knowledge, I must ask : Why do you share with the world? .....seems like you would want to keep it all to yourself/your crew for job security and greed. My old boss would make us wait to do somethings if other tradesmen where around .... like arch formulas,blind nails and shark joints because "You just don't want everyone knowing how, its bad for business"....I'm guessing you disagree with him? Hello Kirk, Love your work and you've inspired me to plaster my interior den walls. With that being said, I just completed skimmed my old texture with all purpose joint compound (green lid) and wanted to know what my next step would be? Would I just apply some plaster bond to the skimmed walls and then add Diamond Veneer? Please let me know as I have received so many different opinions on this and so I thought I'd ask the master. :) Thank you and keep up the great work!
@StuccoPlastering

Howdy A dude, thank you for the master statement, made me laugh. I have not used that gypsum before as most gypsums that are in buckets are premixed, they are not as good or reliable as the bags that people mix themselves. Since you already applied the gypsum, you must use a bonding agent to apply a veneer at this point. Again another rule starts with a veneer plaster and finish with a veneer plaster or start with a base of veneer plaster and finish with a gypsum compound. It's not a good idea to start with gypsum compound and finish with a veneer plaster but can be done as long as you apply a bonding agent first, Id recommends quikrete bonding agent, sold at all home depots or lowes.
