I've stuccoed every wall, man, Johnny Cash.
Of stucco, I've had my share, man, Johnny Cash, Winnemucca, Johnny Cash • J-O-H-N-N-Y C-A-S-H - ... .
Both me and my boy, Johnnie Cash, have seen it all.
The homeowner asked me, “Have you ever seen walls with so much excess sand?”
So I said, Winnemucca.” as in Johnny Cash’s song.
In the late great Johnny Cash’s song, a truck driver asked him, “Have you ever seen and wall with so much excess sand?” in my mind, it rhymed with “dust and sand.”
Then I said, listen, man, “Of stucco, I’ve had my share, man, I’ve stuccoed every wall, man.

Jason and I, my son, a plasterer, and cameraman, arrived on a cold and rainy day; how cold?
The tape would not stick to the window frames, man. So that’s mighty cold to be alright.
Possibly the most information-packed how-to stucco video online today on how-to stucco.
As the weather dictated a quick stucco set, Jason added different accelerators to the cement stucco. Plus, there was always the chance it might rain on us.
If that happened, the mud would need to be set so that it does not wash off.
I started where the stucco I was applying made the most sense: at the top, to set the gravity-induced possibility of the cement stucco adhering to. That top key or joint.
The rest is self-explanatory.

Really it was wood siding that was stuccod over. Planning to use cement board this time. Thanks for the reply

Hi kirk what accelerator do you use, a good tip for tape is to use a heat gun to warm the surface and when the tape is applied heat the tape to activate the glue it never peels off.

Morning Shane, I used to use Luminite years back these days I use same-day products such as Rapid set stucco sold at Homedepot or lowes, or Eisenwall, same manufacturer but only sold at plastering material yards. There about 10 other same-day stucco products sold these days. In fact, every manufacturer of cement or stucco products has its own brand of same-day stucco. Almost all of these same day stucco's should not be mixed more than 3 to 5 minutes as the strength is then compromised. As far as the heat gun, I did have one on the truck that I use to apply colors then dry, immediately to see formulas. But on this repair, I grabbed a towel from my truck and wipped away any moister or dust, then did the tapping again. Kirk,Buddy, I have to send out a huge thank you to you and your son, and crew, for taking the time to share your expertise that took years of work to perfect. I've watched so many of your videos, learned so much about the right way to do things. Then I took a hand grinder with a diamond blade and cut out a 30 foot x 12 inch section of the back of my house down to the wood. Took a grace membrane and filled the space from top to bottom. Used metal flashing above and below the PT 2x10"s I drilled into the side of my house. Filled in the stucco at the top, and poly caulked the heck out of all of it. Painting it to match the house tomorrow in preparation of building a deck off the back of the house. It took for ever because I couldn't figure out a plan. The 2 story house I live in is block and stucco level 1, and wood stud and stucco level 2. Where do I put the ledger?. When I opened up the back of the hose at the top of the block I found rectangle trusses between the floors, 24" apart going away from me. I had no idea what to do.Code doesn't work for that and a 13 foof deck and 24" between lag bolts. I asked every G C I met, and contractor that would listen. Do I attach the ledger to the concrete sill, or the wood wall above it. No Body ever really had an answer. I finally figured out you attach the ledger at the height you need it to be, and attach it to what ever is at that height using code. Or in my case, I massaged code a bit, but that ledger is going no where . Anyway, I could have never done it without your informative video's, where to put it, how to flash it, where to use grace membrane, how to make sure you leave room for the deck under the door, etc. And of course, the correct way to to install paper, wire , and stucco. Although I broke a couple of rules, I'm feeling pretty good about my ledger.I can never thank you enough, if not for your video's I would not have a 30" ledger on the back of my house waiting for the next step. G'day A R Diaz, thank you, brother. Were all still learning as materials keep changing. For the smooth finishes, the trowel I prefer makes it easier, I had 15 men for many years, before I narrowed it down to mostly family. Some of the guys I had at that time could out plaster me with a 12 X 5 trowel and achieve prettier finishes, especially in the smooth coat finishes. I found this shocking but loved this fact. There's no glory in being the best, except for having to do most of the work. You're a master plasterer; thus, you know, smooth coating is by far the most difficult to apply, let alone master. Good morning, I learned a lot from a man we used to call, "Old man Whitey," All of us loved to work with him as he was slow as the hills. Thus we didn't have to work hard. Old whitey was the guy who they sent to repair the fronts of many of the arches of the old train ports at the San Francisco piers, these days, most have been converted into restaurants. Can't leave out my best buddy, "Fred Smith," who worked for his brother, "Danny Smith plastering," for over 40 years. Now retired. The absolute best in plastering with the ability to improvise. When you mentioned "being the best"I find its usally guys with 10 to 15 yrs experience they still have youth on thier side l know I was like that and I'm just saying in general.Ive been plastering for 35 yrs now from California to Florida with every state in between and up and down the east coast and if I learned anything its that there is no "best" plasterer out there.I learn and teach every where I go and thats why I love plastering there is no limit its a life long journey of experiences for those who love it. Hello, I’m Chris from Massachusetts. There aren’t too many stucco homes out here, but that means that those few stand out. My wife and I are in the process of closing on one of these 100 year old gems, and it looks like we’re going to need some repairs of stress cracks and reflash a hip roof and some windows. I’m in the building trades as an energy specialist (how to improve the fuel and electric efficiency of a home). If we were talking HVAC, plumbing, or insulation, I could find a contractor easily since they are plentiful. Unfortunately, stucco’s rarity means contractors are either inexperienced (between jobs as a Sheetrock plasterer), or a large company that wins bids for new Taco Bell’s or Municple buildings (not repairs for small $). Your videos have been increasingly informative, and I’ve learned a ton from them. But, the one thing it doesn’t help with is explaining how to find a contractor in areas where stucco skill is less common. Would you happen to have any advice for me (and anyone else)? Thank you very much!

Yes of course. The only companies/contractors near me are Sheetrock plasterers that have never done stucco in their life but don’t mind giving it a shot, or large construction companies who do exclusively new construction (experienced, but just one company in the area). I’m currently trying to see if I can snag one of the stucco guys from the large experienced company to do it as a side gig when they’re slow. Any other suggestions on how to find someone would be appreciated.

Evening Kezza, yes, I have been wearing one forever, as when I worked behind a "Tommy gun," where they sprayed on the stucco, we all had to hustle or run and twist often below the scaffold level's which would kick our arses, at the end of the day. Mr. Giordano, my home was built in the late 1800s. My question is hanging a tv on a plaster wall what should I do? I am worried I will crack the plaster. Any suggestion would be appreciated

Evening Mr. Warner, easy question, what I do is tap the wall lightly with a hammer, when I hear a solid sound that is a stud or 2 x 4, we know that all home are built with studs apart at 16 inches apart. Then find 16 inches away, again, tap with a hammer to make certain you are indeed on another stud. Once you know the rules you can find studs easy. Now predrill a hole through the soft gypsum into the stud, then use bolts to screw the steel-framed tv stand used to support the weight into the studs. If you miss, no big deal, move over a bit and find the center of the stud and try again. Nothing with weight will have the strength to hold a tv if you're between the studs, we call this empty area, the fields. If you make 20 extra holes but do indeed find the studs, mount your brackets into the studs, then just caulk the holes in the field. Or you can find a stud finder that finds the metalheads of the nails that hold the sheetrock or lath strips. The complete plastering encyclopedia on video, by the plastering messengers of KZbin. Hello Kirk. I love your videos and have learned a ton from them. Thank you! One thing I have wondered as I have watched them is why you sometimes don't extend the Plaster Weld out farther where your repair meets the painted existing stucco. There is always a portion on the edge of the patch with no Plaster Weld (blue in this video) where your plaster is applied over the existing paint. I know you know what you are doing, but have you ever had adhesion issues of your patches in this area where there is no bonding agent?

Good afternoon Dave, If no bonding agent is applied, the stucco will not adhere to a painted surface. I used just to the inner perimeter as that as far as the new stucco needs to be applied, the rest is just colored water, which will wash off. Howdy Ed, Jason loves this trade too. My back is good as I work it. My daughter Madeline is a beautiful girl inside and out. When she was young and still today when I took her to beaches, the first thing she did was clean the beach, I say, baby, what do you call yourself doing? She says, Dad, the fish, could eat this junk and die! She's a marine biologist by trade and helps me stucco on the side. She's in Missagan, scuba-diving, checking algae levels in the lakes for the government at this time.😉
