Plasti Dip Rims Durability Myth - Peel Off Plasti Dip - Lug Nut Test - 1 Year Later

We plastidipped four rims of a car and I've been getting a lot of questions over the year.
How durable is it? Is it easy to peel back off?...etc.
This video is going to be exactly about that. We're going peel it off after being on the car for about a year and talk about durability and a couple of other things.
As far as durability, it holds up amazing. Rocks, chips...never had any. It never peeled off. I just started peeling it for this video so I can have a piece to grab.
We gave it a good 3-4 coats, covered it beautifully as you can see. When I sprayed the Plasti Dip on, I didn't take off the lug nuts, the rim...all I did was covered the rear disc brake with a plastic bag and you know people gave me heat...
All I wanted to do was just to get the black look outside, you know. It looked great! Never had a problem with it. Nobody even knew it was just Plasti Dip.
So now I will peel it off. And yes, it may be harder to peel off on the inner side of the rim where it's kind of more like an overspray. But we'll see how that comes out right now.
As far as the lug nuts, I snapped the lug nuts off once to take the tire off and it didn't peel the Plasti Dip within the lug nut area. I just basically pulled it out and just took the Plasti Dip off the lug nuts. You can't even tell that they were tampered with. Maybe on one, a little bit from the impact wrench but overall, this thing held up for a year with no problems.
So let's go ahead and start peeling it off and see what happens.
This is about a year of being on my rim and it held up beautifully. When I wash the car, I scrub it with a brush, but there's been no scratches...no nothing.
It held up really nice and I think it comes off pretty easily, too. You can see it's still peeling off nicely after being on the rim for a year.
Part of the trick is to just put it on thick. This way it's easy to peel off. You know if you put it on thin, you will have a problem.
It's pretty cool because it preserved the rim.
In some areas where it was thin, it was a little harder to take off so I just had to rub it with my fingers to come off. But not a big deal.
So my #1 recommendation is: when you put Plasti Dip on, put it on thick! The thicker you put it on, the easier your job will be when you're ready to take it off to put a new color on it or leave as is.
Considering this has been on 105 degree heat to 15 degree ice, we put up probably 5,000 miles on this car within the year (We don't drive it all around, it's just a side vehicle)...I'll say the Plasti Dip is pretty cool stuff, super durable!
Yes, it's durable.
Yes, it peels off.
Yes, you could spray it with the lug nuts on and then take the lug nuts off later and not have a problem.
You know if you want, you can take the whole rim off, clean the back sides, spray all of it.

No surprise on the durability. Seems like a lot of folks forget or maybe even never knew that this product want created to be a coating on the handles of tools, so it has to be extremely tough, even in the thinned out state used for coating vehicles. I'm intrigued. My '97 GMC 3500 dually has American Eagle polished 058's but they have some deep scratches. Only option I have been able to find being cost effective is just a new set which is around $2K. I figure since my truck is white, to fill the scratches with body filler then coat with black. Thing was I wasn't to sure about the durability but this vid changes that prospective.

I dipped mine and had to peel it off after having to get my tires patched by a tire place. I didn't lay it down thick enough when I painted it, b/c I had a HELL of a time getting it all off. I still have some that I can't get out of the lug ports too, lol.

I wanna dip my rims black and keep the lugs silver, but I don’t have lug nut holes, they push right up against the rim. Will the plastidip break or peel when I go to tighten the undipped lugs back on the wheels?

I've plasti diped the emblems on my truck but never tried to take it off yet. But what I'm curious about is how well would it come off on the actual paint of the vehicle (like the hood for example) after being on it for a year or two? Everyone is doing there rims but nothing much on spraying it on the actual vehicle and how it comes off after a year or two!

I had dip on a '05 Altima for nearly 2 years. Peeled off perfectly fine and I'm in texas where we experience about the same weather as Tony described. However, I bought a kit from DYC. You can't properly cover a car with cans unless you buy a 💩 ton of them....and at that cost you may as well buy the DYC car kits and their sprayer 💁‍♂ I tried lol For a small bumper you'd need atleast 10 cans for proper coverage to retain peelability. Otherwise you'll make the same mistake I did and have alot of problems removing it.

You need to make sure not to catch an edge...if you do that, then any dip will start to peel. They have a reccomendation on the DYC site and Fonzie did a video on NOT using anything over 3000 psi. Personally, I never went over 2000 and didn't use any tip below 30 degrees. Definitely avoid automatic car washes as they can have more potential to grab a edge and cause problems. Above all, just don't have the pressure washer too close.

I just bought a 2006 Hummer H3, and it has chrome rims. It came from the beach, so the chrome is horribly corroded and chipping off. Any recommendations as to prepping the rims (all five of them) without taking the tires off of the rims? I don't mind taking them off of the vehicle. I plan to use Plasti Dip, but I need to know how I can prep the rims, so the Plasti Dip will stick. Thanks!!

+Dylan Sparks Clean them really well, put index cards in a circle around the wheel. Put the index cards in that space between the tires and the wheel. After that just plasti dip 4-5 coats, 10 minutes in between each coat. Make sure to go from a different angle each coat so you can get full coverage. Good luck!

We have been doing alot of plastidip with our friends wheels and lets say 3 out of 5 cars we will have an issue regarding the plastidip pulling off with the lugnuts when we try to put the lugnuts back. We do take the wheels off coz some of my friends wanted to paint their callipers with g2 then wheels with plasti dip. So we do 3 coats of black and 1 coat of glossifier, we try not to plasti dip the hole (lugnut hole) too much so it wont pull off when we try to putback yhe the lugnuts with the wrench. But still no matter how carefully we do it 1 or 2 out of 20 lugnuts, the plasti dip will be pulled off. Is there something we can do or a technique? And also since thats the problem. Tire rotation will be take that dip off wont it? Looking forward for your advice please email me since i still have alot of. Wheels to do. Thanks

You need to put on more then 3 coats first off. Secondly, to stop the lugs from ripping you need to clean off a little bit of the area with goo gone where the lugnut would touch the dip.

GrandTheftAidan It will, but of course you can scratch paint during a tire change so the dip is protecting the paint. And you can just touch up the dip, or put the same or new color dip over the whole rim.

Only 5,000 miles in one year... I wouldnt go by these results. The average mileage in a year for driving is 12k - 15k miles. The plasti dip may look worse after 15k in extreme weather over a year.

It has been a couple of weeks and I have noticed that in some parts of the rims around the curves and turns, an air bubble has formed somehow and the coat can be seen lifted from the surface of the rim. It looks okay now but Imma probably gonna have to fix that at some point in the future when the air bubble begins to grow... what do you recommend for this not to happen? I actually took off the whole wheel so I can put it at chest level to spray it horizontally. I don't know what I did wrong :(

DEEZ NUTS Yes. The dip will peel off almost any surface if it is thick enough. I would not spray it on fabric... There is also a dip remover spray that will just melt it back to a liquid and it can be wiped off.

It's the matte chrome rims underneath, same thing applies to painting let's say you start with a white background and spray blue on it, it will look brighter like a sky blue. If the background was black it would be much darker like a midnight blue. This is why when people paint stuff like their bedroom walls black if you want to paint them another color you first have to lay down a cover layer of something like white otherwise the black will dull down the color and most likely show through.
