Plastic Strap Cut Off Giant Seal's Neck

Many of our dock seals are enormous. They stay close to the fish factories for food and keep their energy demands low. They pick up the fish scraps from factory outlet pipes that are flushed back into the ocean. Our harbor seals are fat and healthy until they get entangled. The easy food does not come for free at all. There is plenty of plastic rubbish floating around. Especially plastic packaging straps are a ticking time bomb. We often find old rescues entangled again. 🦭

I love the way Tony directs the seals that he's trying to net ... he's always so sweet about it, rather than getting upset and cussing them out. And Denzil did a nice job of cutting the strap with the (awkward) pole and hook ... AND one-handed, at that! As always, team OCN is absolutely AMAZING! Thank you, HEROES ❤

Using the hook on that big bull sure beats using the net...less stress on the seal and the rescuers! Denzil hooked the strap so quickly, the bull never even knew he was the target! Good work!👏

​@@karinlindblom2934 exactly. And even if they did have a net big enough wrestling that hulking boy to the ground so they could work on him like normal would be impossible. Even with the full team that would have been a huge risk.

The first one was a great sneak rescue, and lucky the pole was just long enough. The second one was hard, and very dangerous when they are that big. Thankfully, it was caught early and an easy cut and release. When the get big it's very dangerous, as they are very strong and smart. Great saves OCN!

The 2nd bull they netted was so big, he was snorting and poofing up little clouds of sand THROUGH the net ... glad he wasn't even more trouble as they freed him after cutting theentanglement -- he was already in a hurry to get out of there. NICE, quick rescues of both seals! ❤

WOW! so impressive - both rescues. Here in the middle of the UK, we don't have seals but the seagulls and feral cats got caught in plastic bags and 'six-pack' alcohol can ties. Even four tins of baked beans or tomato soup were packaged together with plastic, which caught round the animals necks and feet. Thank goodness they have been banned now, and they are all packed together just with cardboard. So grateful for you doing these rescues. 🤩🤩

Two fantastic rescues right there, both difficult in different ways. Denzil's strap hooking was edge of the seat good and had me moving forward to look over the nets. 😂😂 Tony's pursuit of his slippery seal was full on and exciting. Denzil, you had better wear some running shoes not flip flops, you will twist your ankle in the sand or sprain your knee - too much lateral movement in the ankle.
