I followed this tutorial, and was able to send a zip of the programs to some friends. With in a minute I was able to get them to locate their wads, and jump into a game, played some sigil with the brutal doom mod. Things went very smoothly thanks for the help!

Thank you so much for a good tutorial. I have stumbled upon classic doom in 2020 but felt these sourceports, wads, sofware and multiplayer to be overwhelming to configure. Today i installed eveyrthing according to your tutorial and everything just works like butter. Just watching this is nostalgic enough. I started playing Doom online about 11 years ago, and I started with Skulltag which was the heat back in the day before it got discontinued and everyone moved to Zandronum. The whole system of Wadseeker conveniently finding wads for you from all over the internet is so good that it still sticks just right in its place. Doom community and programming in general is brilliant because if it was any other game, you'd have to fetch the mods manually by yourself and risk getting a virus from some obscure site.

I love Doomseeker/Wadseeker and Doom Explorer/GetWad for their ability to take all the hassle out of the equation! When GetWad first came out in 2004 or so, it was a HUGE shift in convenience.

I just want to state this because I have no idea how well known it is. Odamex was ported to the og xbox. I don’t recall which version. But today just out of curiosity... I transferred an Xbox build of odamex to my RGHed Xbox 360 and surprisingly it works very well. Just ran through a level of doom zone for nostalgia. I had no idea we could get a version of ZDoom on Xbox/Xbox 360 :3

@@DoomKid A couple survival ones, but every duel and ffa one I see is either completely empty, passworded, or populated only by bots. Only time I'm ever able to get into a game of FFA or Duel is if its organized by a group and I find out about it.

I say this because yesterday I got one of my friends into playing ZDaemon on a Moonblood server and while playing we kept joking about like, how demons in Doom are actually just satanic furries or something like that and we spawned an entire YTP collaboration from goofing around in Doom, and it was all thanks to the existance of this video because it helped him install this game in the first place.

Have you tried using TSPG (the sentinels playground) to host a server on Zandronum? I find it’s the easiest way to make a server that all my friends can see.

If you are making a server from home you need to open the server ports on your router settings (been some time since i did it but if my memory doesnt fail me you have yo open the ports from 1666 to 2000

Hey, I got a problem...I'm new to this kinda stuff so, yeah. In the "Wad download path" I can't find the folder where I keep all my Wads. Actually, I can't even find the "Desktop" folder for some reason. So since you said the Wad download path has to be in the exact same folder I selected under the Wads tab, this means I am unable to join other players. Whenever I try to, it says "IWad not found: doom2.wad", even if the server doesn't require any other Wad. This is probably a stupid problem but, again, I'm new to this stuff.

If your Doom wads are in a folder on your desktop, or anywhere in your user account, you should be able to find them at "C:\Users\(your username)\Desktop". Try looking in C:\Users and let me know if you find what you need.

Little update: instead of trying to look for "Desktop" over and over, I created a folder in my username folder where I put all of the Wads as well as all the source ports (Zandronum, ZDaemon, Odamex). So now DOOM Explorer recognizes it and I'm able to select the folder for both the Wad search and download path. But there's still a problem, whenever I try to join someone, an error pops up and it says "doom2.wad needs updating in order to play on this server.", followed by the Error "IWad not found: doom2.wad." Or other times "Error launching game, errorcode=2..."

Rewatching this I started to think - where the hell I could did something wrong. A year ago I already reacted on the video that the guide is really good - and it's still is. But I changed place since, that means the internet is different too. Tried to establish my own server today and... it didn't work. At all. (However playing in the servers that are already existing is possible and stable) A year before I was playing multiplayer with the guys on my server, but what happened now if I didn't forget anything including port-forwarding. And what's more weird - I've been looking the internet and everybody seems to have tendencies to host a server from some kind of Sentinels place - it is good because it helps. But what if we want to change mods or Iwads each 20 minutes? Then I need to go back to that website, which is stupid and redo that, while with DE or DS you can just do it yourself in two clicks... if you manage to make it work worldwide and not LAN. I think hosting servers is still a problem and as I tried ti find the answer I only seen countless amount of topics throughout the internet where people did everything right, but their server is still counts as LAN and players from other networks cannot join. Maybe if you can pull out some kind of tutorial to troubleshooting or a better use of those Sentinels hosting services that would make the world of Multiplayer Doom a lot better and accessible, more than that you are really notorious for making marvelous things to community. Sorry for lots of words.

I've used remote servers like Sentinels, or my own Doomshack server for years, it's just been so long. I know I'm late to reply, but if you ask at Doomworld, you may find someone more adept at hosting local servers (that broadcast to the net, of course).

Zandronum actually has a server explorer named Doomseeker, but sure, I guess DOOM Explorer works as well.

Doomseeker doesn't query ZDaemon, meaning you miss out on lots of servers. I'd only suggest Doomseeker for Linux users, since ZDaemon is essentially a Windows port.

Doomseeker sucks, it don't hold any of your settings, badly works with ZDoom mods and shows a little of servers that actually exist. The only good thing about - "it's just multiplayer doom", so running a server is not a problem.

I can't seem to get past the part where I need to set a path directory for my WADS in Doom Explorer. It won't show me my Desktop, or the folder where the WADS folder is located. I've tried all sorts of shenanigans and none of them worked. idk what I'm doing wrong, anyone help?

I'm really sorry I didn't see this until just now. Have you considered looking into Doomseeker for Zandronum/Odamex, and ZDaemon's own internal browser? Sadly it'lll mean you need 2 programs rather than 1, but if they work, it's still preferable for sure. I hope this helps.

the Wads I download are always successful, but when they all finish downloading, it says the Wads arent found. I even check the logs and it says they were downloaded correctly, yet I get an error. Any advice?

Is it in “program files”? Some directories in Windows aren’t recognised by DE, I think it’s some Windows security thing.. my folder is on my desktop (in my main desktop folder, as a sub folder). Try moving your wad folder to a new location, then changing the directories in DE to look for wads there and download them to there. I hope this works but if not, Bond (the guy who made DE) is on Doomworld and might be able to help

You'll need Doom2.wad, however it can be easily found on archive dot org if you're short on money.

I got stuck on the part where i make a new account. I had made an account in the past but i got logged out for some reason. Whenever I try to make a new account in the doom explorer launcher it flashes the login button, and it doesnt let me create any new accounts. I assume it's telling me to login to my old account but I don't remember the password and I can't reset it. edit: I clicked on logs and it says "Can't connect to ZDaemon Master Server" when i tried to log in

If this is the case, you won't be able to play public ZDaemon servers, however you will still have access to all Zand and Odamex ones. If you're willing to you can also try creating a new account, although I know that's lame, but that error message doesn't mean you have the wrong password, just that it isn't making a connection for some odd reason.

Yeah, unfortunately both it and ZDaemon are essentially Windows-only ports - on Linux, Doomseeker is the best choice, since it queries Zand, Odamex and Chocolate Doom which are all Linux compat, but what's the trouble it's giving you?

@@DoomKid When I try to set my WAD directory it opens up a file manager, but nothing shows up on the file manager, no files or subfolders beyond the default Linux user directory. It's an odd issue I've never had with anything before.

You could use WINE to make it work, that's what I use and ZDaemon and Zandronum run at a decent frame rate (Odamex lags terribly, roughly at 15 FPS I think, at least for me)

They’re different ports with pretty different features! ZDaemon has a leaderboard that’s been going for 22 years which tracks death match score, but Zandronum has more robust mod support, being like a “lite” GZDoom in some ways. ZDaemon still can play loads of wads tho!

I found my friend's server and I am not able to connect it appears a grey face and n/a, what can I do?

Try right clicking the server to refresh it - if it stays grey, that either means your friends server lost its connection to the master, or you’ve lost the connection to your friends server. Sometimes right clicking to refresh will help. If you still have trouble try asking at Doomworld.com, there’s some Doom gurus there who will be able to help

Have you tried out TSPG, aka The Seentinel's Playground? It has automated server hosting for Zand!

So when you enter a server and it downloads the wads, when you exit does it automatically delete them or do I have to find them and delete them? Edit: Also for some reason DOOM Utilities just wont work, I don't know if its a problem with the site or my PC.

Doom Explorer will download wads to whichever folder you specify when setting where to download wads to, so if you need to delete them that’s where you’ll be able to find them. Also the DoomUtils site seems to be working on my end - doomutils.ucoz.com/ maybe it was temporarily down when you checked? It may also be affected by which browser you use (I used Chrome)

What is the difference between the 3 dm source ports?

ZDaemon has a leaderboard that’s been going for 22 years which tracks death match score, but Zandronum has more robust mod support, being like a “lite” GZDoom in some ways. Odamex has the most faithful behaviour to vanilla Doom, but it and ZDaemon still can play loads of wads, everything for vanilla and Boom, and a good number of zdoom wads.
