Think about a couple of your favorite iwad maps (for instance, I really like Containment Area, Hell Beneath, Tricks & Traps, and The Living End). Ponder about which you think are the most fun to play, which you think look the coolest, and analyze why you think that about those levels. Now, plan out a rough concept for a map in your head, perhaps combine various aspects of said favorite maps, and then select a visual theme or two from one of them which you'll focus on for the level, try also to put a spin on things here and there, how you can imitate this or that encounter or trap, and how you can do some of them differently. An important part is that you'll want to make it a challenge, don't have to go overboard, but make fights so that they're hard for you yourself to beat, but not so hard that you don't think you can beat the level without saving, make that your Hard skill setting, then dial it down in intensity for Medium and Easy respectively (less numerous/tough enemies, more health and ammo). Ideally, levels should be realistically beatable from 'Pistol Start', ergo, without having to carry over stuff from previous levels. Importantly, *don't bite off more than you can chew*, it may be tempting to start work on a 32 level megawad which you've fantasized about, but that is a LOT of work, especially for a newbie, instead, make your first .wad a small set, 2, 3, maybe 4 or 5 maps. Lastly, if you're making maps for Vanilla or Boom format, you MUST test those levels with a Vanilla or Boom sourceport, GzDoom and its derivative ports change how some things work, and there are some things which works fine in GzDoom, but which will break and not function properly in Vanilla or Boom. UDMF is fine to work in, I like it, but it can also be a bit overwhelming in all the options it offers you, so I think starting out with something like Boom isn't a bad idea.

I had to pause a bit after the first few minutes trying to replicate the shape and learn about split linedefs and dragging vertexes and lines, but once you get that down you'll be smooth sailin'. At least as much as you can in DOOM. Recovering from a botched shape drawing is weird and I'm still trying to get the rhythm of right click-left click for shape drawing down :)

You make the best Doomachinima. Now you made the best into tutorial to doom builder I have seen in over a decade. The documentation and tutorials for GZDB are abysmal. Sure, if you know what the thing you want is called, the wiki is great. Wanna try searching for it with common terms? Good fucking luck. The most embarrassing thing is that DB2 has a link for the "tutorial", and instead of giving you, IDK, the _fucking manual,_ they give you some of the worst examples of bad youtube software tutorials out there. Don't get me wrong, the info isn't _wrong,_ but it must be breaking some sort of human decency code to make the you watch 6 fucking videos of Spongebob's more nasally and annoying little brother narrating at through from a flip phone mic mounted to the inside of several industrial freezer compressors at once while he seemingly chews and slobbers his way through every piece of saltwater taffy ever created. Slowly. So very. Very. Slowly. And boring. Good thing some dude who makes doom sprites spin and scream came along and summarized 90% of of their basic tutorial section in 10 minutes of snappy, informative, and well-edited video.
