I’m 15 and am going to play for my church and I’m self taught and I have a question for you When you play a song on the piano for the church where do you put your hands like mostly In the middle or left or right when playing? do you put them as much in the middle as you can? And if not possible because of the key your in should you play the song more on the left or right?

@@Popularshorts83 if you got a bass player try not to play far left. If you don’t then the middle/left is fine, but don’t make your left hand muddy.

"Get comfortable with all of your altered chords". How do I know what all of them are that I should go get comfortable with? Is there a list somewhere that I can just go grind and learn?

Great exercises/tips! May I ask you what piano sound are you using? I am looking for a generic piano sound that's good for pop and maybe for some jazz (and it's not Keyscape or Ravenscroft). Do you have some alternative piano sound recommendations? Thank you for your help, have a nice week!

If you don't like either of the 2 options you mentioned above I would try Kontakts piano libraries. They have like 7 or 8 different sample based pianos that have a wide range of applications. (It's great for production!) I have a few friends and students who have tried Pianoteq. It's modeling instead of sample based so you get a different sound but I've heard tons of great reviews about it. (We've never tried it though)

@@thegiftedhandsmusic Thank you so much for your reply, appreciated! Actually I have Noire, but it is so soft sounding (NOIRE Pure (not the NOIRE Felt library)), even if I EQ the h@ck out of the top end it still sounds like a piano that simply not willing to play brighter piano stuff :) I kind of like the Ravenscroft, I reeealy love its release tails, I find it has the best release tails in the piano sample library industry (if that's a thing :D) I think Ravenscroft's release tails are even better than the highly regarded industry standard VSL pianos, but those purpose are different (I mean I wouldn't really go for VSL piano for dry sounding piano with a lot of short notes (staccato/shortnotes needs Ravenscroft style release tails), so I'm still keeping an eye on Raven, but I don't like its metallic sound, I have to listen a lot more demos and maybe it can make me decide if I can live with Raven's sound/timbre, because the only thing that made me stop using Pianoteq is its sound, I cant stand it anymore, I loooove its playability, but I can't handle its synthetic sound anymore, I didn't expect my ear gonna pick up on it by time, because when I bought Pianoteq 6 STAGE I didn't hear it that synthetic and the sound didn't bother me at all. It seems, wether if I want or not, our ears develop automatically by time to certain extent, and I think my ear simply grew out of the Pianoteq synthetic sound. I love almost everything about Pianoteq, except the sound, so probably I'm gonna go with Ravenscroft if I find my ear get used to and start be friends with Raven's rather metallic sound. Sorry for the wall of text, thank you for your piano VST recommendations / helpful reply again! I hope you have a nice weekend! :)

How do you memorize all those chords and categories without looking at your hands? Do you teach beginners with novice abilities to play by ear? What is this gifted hands academy?

In my opinion, the layout of the keys is a major design flaw that makes most sense when sticking to C-major and A-minor and using a transpose function for the rest. If the two gaps in the black keys would be utilized, one would only need to learn two finger-patterns to be able to play in all 12 keys, even and uneven... (and as a bonus, the distance between octaves would be smaller). I can't get over why musicians are so conservative on the 7 white and 5 black layout, why not give the next generation a boon and allow them to do stuff while they only need a sixth of the muscle-memory with a 6 white - 6 black layout?

I get your point, but even guitarists move to different strings, so when they are transposing a melody or chords they don't just slide up or down on the fretboard.

On the other hand, because of this key layout, piano is one of the best music theory teaching instrument.

Almost every single instrument have some keys that are easier to play in with. Transposing/learning-playing-scales-and-chords-etc-in-different-keys is unavoidable.

@@kaisfp Yes it is good for music theory I admit, however when playing live I would never get up to speed if I would have to calculate the notes consciously while playing. At that point it's all about unconscious muscle memory driven in by practice. The required practice time could be allot less with a symmetric layout. Guitars can also be tuned in open chords (usually lap steel guitars are), at least they get a choice to tune it any way they want (unless they want to pick up any guitar and play it). Oh well, our decimal numbering system is also flawed, we should have two more numbers after 9 before writing 10 (which in that case would be twelve) but we are too used to the flawed systems to change anything...
