I couldn't stand EYE, to be honest. EYE is inspired by Deus Ex, but ends up being much different after some progress is made. Brigand actually feels like it has more in common with Deus Ex. Also, in regards to mention of Neuro Hunter... Brigand is also better than Neuro Hunter.

This is like someone woke up with an artistic vision for a glorious statue, but had no idea how to make a statue, so he cobbled it together as best he could with nothing but scrap metal and scotch tape and by god you have to admire the fact that it exists.

I'm not just impressed that this game exists, I'm also upset that it was *fun*. I had a good time playing it bc this video made me want to try it, and the aimbot enemies and fast ass mutants pissed me off just right. Brian knows how to make a solid immersive sim and I'm impressed bc I didn't think a stoned dev could make something so simply well cobbled together. It's not the best game but it's undeniably a good one despite it's flaws and given that he's a one man team and not making something that prints money like Stardew valley I can very much respect it. Chuckle fish is a similar situation iirc, indie dev made it on his own out of boredom and fun and passion.

Brian needs to be given a creative director position at the head of a talented and skilled development team with a shotgun to enforce his vision. I don't want this man making another game himself, but I want to see all his crazy visions become a reality.
@timothymclean

Ideas are cheap. Creative directors are paid not to have creative visions, but to convey them clearly to their team and keep everyone on the same page. I have no idea how good Brian would be at that, or whether the drugs and alcohol would make that better or worse, but I hope it balances out to at least competent, because I would also love to see what he could accomplish with a team of specialists.

I started playing this recently and your descriptions of it are DEAD ON. I was kind of confused by lines like "the mouse wheel is unresponsive, and the e and q keys are far too responsive" or "the controls cap your reactions, and the enemies are slightly faster than that cap", but they describe it PERFECTLY. I've already softlocked myself, and Brian's already hard at work fixing it, so I think I'm in for a good time. Thanks for playing a melee and charisma build so I don't have to lol.

This video inspired me to pick up Brigand: Oaxaca, and it's got a certain very clunky charm to it. More than anything, it reminds me of Hard Time. Both are bizarre passion projects created by one person. Both try things that someone who was hoping to turn massive profits or break into the mainstream games industry would be too scared to. Both have massive amounts of quirks and hang-ups. And both are absolutely fascinating and worthwhile to play, even if they're sometimes buggy or frustrating. Because, like you said in the review, it's always rewarding to play something that is exactly what its creator wanted it to be.

this game has 29 reviews..... I'm glad you picked it up and show it here. Especiallly those games are games that should be known. This is what gaming can be and should not be(broken beyond belief). Trying new things out that only really works in games. Instead of improving graphic, improving what can be done in gameplay - yes gameplay wise it is mostly stagnant nowadays. Sure it's broken and everything is held together by duct tape, but it is unique and I don't mean that like "it's special-bad". You truly find no other game like that.. Maybe the openworld and rpg-elements, but not this... theme and how every element comes together. I think it's great you choose always those special kind of games. Why sit in one place all the time for vegetables that you have to work your ass off to get when you could just follow the deer migrations? You'd probably only do it if there was something else that you had to sit still for a long time to get as well, and something _really_ good.

I honestly love the idea of the game though the developer's inexperience pulled the game back, the post apocalyptic concept is not well implemented as it add the player to an environment that builds around him instead of the opposite and there are not many changes on the environment as it looks more like a dried land with fantasy creatures, the story is rather interesting, the movement is clunky, fighting is clunky aswell but you have to make a gun based build as the game is unbalanced and thus destroys replayability, a lot of thinks are hidden as they are expected by the player to be found rather than guiding him to them, some elements are well done like the inventory shortage, i hope the best for the developer and i wish he learns more about making a great game in many ways.

He could even do a playthrough on commentary comms and/or livestream, I recently played a good chunk of EYE coop with the max number of players (at least what the server could handle) and it was a surprising amount of fun considering how difficult it was at points racing other players to get to the objective I wanted first.

This is right up there with My Summer Car and Pathologic in a certain breed of games to me. Games that are positively insane, batshit hard, and janky as can be, seemingly following no game design common sense, and yet, end up being a rock with nougat filling, for those willing to put the effort into playing it by its own rules. They're games that're what the designer themselves wanted to make, not trying to be anything else, and honestly, I think stuff like this is more inspiring to me as a wannabe dev than games that're super polished and objectively fun to play. Like, yeah, those ones might be "good," but this feels like it's accessible. Proof that with hard work, someone as dumb as I am can buckle down and make something I wanna put out there, or..something like that. I think about these games a lot, and I mean, a lot, but I don't quite have Teh's ability to put things like this into easily concise words. Just that even tho I don't plan on putting myself through them, these types of games are among my favorites out there.

Years after watching this video I have finally gotten around to playing through Brigand and I honestly think it might be one of the most peak RPGs I've experienced, despite everything going against it and probably thanks in no small part to Brian's dedication with patches after all this time. "Enemies are faster than the controls allow you to react" is far and away the game's biggest flaw IMO but I think once you adjust to it and all of the game's systems click together, coupled with the extremely low time-to-kill, the vision really comes through and you feel like a crazy badass surviving moment to moment and pulling off impossible missions. I lowkey love the Baroque as endgame enemies and think the game does a fantastic job of selling the threat that an entire faction of absolutely lethal cyber-ninjas should present and conditioning you to fear bumping into the bastards at any moment lmao

I would suggest playing it if curious, as with anything these videos are my experiences but I would never tell someone not to have their own, it's not really that surprising regardless, for all of its bugginess and frustrating unfairness, you won't find anything quite like Brigand, and that in itself is really valuable, the story behind it just heightens that.

Snake: I'm sure somebody must have told you by now, but did you know a huge amount of the lore for this game appears to be lifted straight from the novel "Snow Crash" by Neal Stephenson? Some stuff taken from the book includes: the nuclear weapon wired to the guy dying, Uncle Bob (both the name and the concept; I think it might have been like two PMCs called Uncle Jim's & Admiral Bob's in the book), the privatized CIA, and arguably Carmen's backstory (seems very similar to the backstory of YT from the book). I bet there's probably more that I'd recognize if I played the whole game myself. You should read it, it's pretty short.
@BrianLancaster
@BrianLancaster 2 жыл бұрын
Ya, I think it was Admiral Bob in Snow Crash, but he wasn't a main character. And Machete 2 (terrible movie) also did the nuke attached to the vital signs thing. I did directly steal the Skull Gun implant from Diamond Age, but I think Neal Stephenson would be OK with that. My favorite book of his is Reamde, though, which came out too recently for me to have ripped shit off from.

I actually really enjoy this setting. It's oddball enough to make it stand out amongst the litany of other post-apoc settings out there. Yeah, It's very clearly Fallout-inspired, but only through the general features than the lore itself (the general tech level seems much closer to today) but also ventures out and incorporates elements from other genres like *kinda* cyberpunk and *kinda* fantasy, and it seems pretty clear that a new society, one taking full advantage of the tools of the past, has been rooted for some time.
