Early War Thunder had no added haze or smoke effect. It was high contrast, clear vision you could see for days.

Back in 2013 you could see the whole enemy team from your spawn with ultra low graphics, also could see through clouds.

It is actually pretty awful, style-wise. The contrast was WAY too high, and the tint was often hideous. Too much blue and green tint, and shadows that were pitch black with the sun high in the air. But hey, pros and cons!

played war thunder way back in 2014 when it was BARELY out of closed beta! never knew this hidden gem existed! i swear ANCIENT war thunder had that flak before it got the effects outright replaced by LASER CANNONS that never miss

New games worry more about micro transactions and everything else. I play war thunder religiously, just nice to see it in more detail. For how old it is it still as good as games today.

I was in college when this came out 18 years old. Loved it! I played every fight game made back then on Xbox. Including "Crimson Skies" - that was a good one! I was one of the first 100 players to join War Thunder while it was in Alpha.

Birds of Steel on the PS3 for me was my Wings of Prey. Absolutely loved that game, had every aircraft. 8 year old me still has a distinct memory of flying a H6K trying to do a torpedo run in a multiplayer lobby. I got hit by flak and a fuel fire started, I was amazed. A fire usually meant the aicraft was gone and it automatically made you bail out and zoom out. Yet here it was, I could still fly and watch my aircraft burning. I was completely stunned. Got my torps off before the tanks detonated. Unfortunately a decade old memory has been hazy so I have no idea what happened then. I don't even know what type of ship I was aiming for, I just have one grainy image of a burning H6K and a feeling of wonder.

I think the one that I played first before War Thunder was Birds of Steel or something like that. It had the Gaijin intro and the iconic theme as well as a full-on tech tree. And the mouse aim circle thing for console.

The reason all the flak is better and stuff, is because gaijin was only working on aircraft and aircraft, gaijin has to work on three separate things in war thunder, and their budget as a result in split between the four trees of each nation
