There was a study about telling kids to 'be careful' which indicated that telling a child not to drop something or to be careful not to spill or whatever was more likely to have them actually screw up than saying something positive such as 'pay attention to what you're doing or 'watch where you are going'. The kids who were cautioned not to mess up seemed to envision their failure, have more anxiety performing and to lose focus whereas the positively instructed stayed on task and attentive to the project at hand, and were more likely to successfully accomplish what they were attempting.

Some really deep nuggets of insight in this episode, for real. When Johnny talked about "my illness is not my identity" that really blew my mind (the analogy applies to grief for me, personally). I also really appreciated how he talked about his overly doting mother, and how being told to "be careful" makes him cringe. I've always HATED it when people say "drive safe!" when I'm leaving somewhere. My response is always, "Don't tell me how to drive, I'll drive however I like!" And now all the people in my life, including my doting mother, always say "drive however you like!" when I leave somewhere

The cadence and tone of his voice is what killed it for the doctor Phil was tooo good. He just spoke Spanish in doctor Phil lecture 😂. Side note, loved the beginning philosophy and psychology talk. Want more of that goodness

Johnny is the fuckin best, he never fails to make me laugh, that Dr. Phil bit was so solid, he was on a roll! 😂 I hope he comes back more often, on here and on YMH, he just needs to make more podcast rounds because he's always such a great guest, very adaptable to anywhere and everyone he visits with.

Oh my goodness, Christina, my husband pretty much had the SAME experience, but with the opposite parent. Same age too, I think. 😮 He went to foster care for a few years, though, because his dad was in prison for robbing a bank. He had his twin brother with him so he wasn't alone. The kicker, though, is that the first foster home they were placed in was right across the street from where his mom and older brother still lived so they would see them daily from the window of the home. Weird. You would love to hear all of my husband's stories, he has so many ridiculously good ones, I keep telling him to write a book. He is French Canadian and has the best sense of humour because of his childhood. Oh, and yay to hearing that you were born in Canada!!! 😘
