Thank for featuring my trailer. I hope your subscribers get something from it. Nice job of editing. I am not a speech maker. Although I have conducted many tours of my trailer. If anyone has questions, I will try to answer them. As I read this, I am sitting in the middle of a lake on ice. Listening to the ice thump around me. Last year I camped every month of the year. Thank you for sharing this Drew!!! After seeing so many teardrops/squaredrop tt's from you I've really been thinking about a DIY trailer myself, even been drawing out different kinds. This gentleman here is an absolute GENIOUS! He didn't just think outside of the box, he threw the box inside the camper and built around it! It's so nice to see so many people out here saying "if a small travel trailer is going to be $30,000 then I'll just build one MY WAY for 1/10th of the price (actually less than that)! Please do more of these as you come across them!

Brilliant design! I've delved into foam construction, and used it to make part of the kitchen unit in my Mercedes Vito van. It was a massive learning curve, and there are some disadvantages to foam (mostly for me, it is bulkier than wood; also harder to get accurate cuts if you need perfectly square corners) but its super light weight is a huge plus & makes it worth persisting.

Kenneth and his wife are the salt of the earth! His ingenuity is commendable and inspiring. On the subject of trailer construction, I think it's high time we reconsider the question of modern, wood built trailers vs fiberglass trailers. Theoretically, fiberglass materials are superior and command a small premium over their wood counterparts, but with today's modern wood construction techniques, is it really necessary to prefer a fiberglass trailer over a wood one? When I look a companies like Hiker Trailer, Timberleaf trailers, High Camp trailers, Teardrops NW and Oregon Tail'r, just to name a few, how many of their customers are reporting problems with the supposed shortcomings of using wood. Sure, there's added maintenance, but I'd argue that it adds to more self-reliant confidence and the experience of ownership. Drew, what are you hearing from the traditional wood, teardrop trailer owners?
@PlayingwithSticks
@PlayingwithSticks 8 күн бұрын
Well I completely agree with you, they get a worse rap than they deserve. They still have their limitations no matter what people say. Even hiker, if you watch our videos where we interview them or their own videos they have nothing to hide, They will tell you their trailer is built to last 10 to 15 years. The last video I saw from hiker said they built it to last as long or longer than your tow vehicle. Where a scamp or Casita as we know was built to last generations. So it's tough for me with this narrative. If we're talking about the major players hiker, high Camp, Oregon Trail'r.. I would say you're absolutely right, if you take care of them, They'll last a lifetime. But I get nervous switching my narrative because there's all these small ma and pa wood-built teardrops that pop up across the country And they haven't learned the lessons the hard way yet. I still see wood built campers using gas struts in the galley all over the country, probably about 90% of them. None of the big guys are doing this, because they've had tons of trailers come back with these seam separation problems. And you're right, wood trailers are not built to last decades without maintenance. There's just too many factors at play working against those glue, screw, and wood seams. But, with proper maintenance and a good eye it's going to really make you be involved with the trailer, get to know it, understand it, and be able to keep it around for your grandkids. Love this comment, you really got me thinking here. This is coming from the guy who's a total sat for wood campers. I always tell people if I was in a different stage of my life, I would always choose a wood camper over a fiberglass trailer. But after all the maintenance on my wood teardrop trailer, during this busy stage of life with the kids and family, I'm going to stick with something a little less maintenance.

The trouble we have is most trailers have the bed sideways and are never long enough for my 6'3" husband. A foot slide out would solve that!

It's a little harder to find at a pump. But it burns cleaner and your hands don't stink after filling the tank. It's a little more costly but one doesn't use that much with a camper.

A lot of great ideas but I'm two thumbs mechanically. Willing to pay for other's expertise. Looking at several options but ultimately it'll come down to what a Toyota Corolla hybrid will pull.
@PlayingwithSticks
@PlayingwithSticks 8 күн бұрын
I've never heard of two thumbs, is that like all thumbs? Sorry I'm pretty dense. At 1,500 lb. Towing capacity. You're probably going to be looking at teardrops and square drops. Ideally you'll want something under 1,000 lb.

@PlayingwithSticks All thumbs too LOL. I'm looking at the Road Toad and the Blue Mountain. Considered the Tusca Hitchhiker too. Most likely the Road Toad Totes because of the weight and their power options. Besides the mpg's of the hybrid the climate control can make a hybrid car great to hang out in hot weather.

@kennethkilpatrick3758 Blue mountain camper company, that's a new one to me. I think a lot of people have the road toad as their favorite option. Unfortunately many people don't go with it though because of the long wait time. Have you heard how long the current weight is? I haven't checked in with them in a while. I'm also a fan of the hitchhiker. Love the simplicity And versatility of it.
@kennethkilpatrick3758
@kennethkilpatrick3758 7 күн бұрын
@PlayingwithSticks I mentioned Blue Mountain the other day. They've got some great looking trailers but they are heavier. I'm willing to wait on the Road Toad. The Hitchhiker is sure priced right but there's something to be said for one stop, get all the options I want put together by experts like the Road Toad.

Please, inform me of a camper that's not flammable. An aluminum skin over (?) is not fireproof. With the foam and canvas, I can defiantly kick my way out. Can you kick thru an aluminum skin? There is plus and minus in all designs.
