I just looked at one yesterday. Average price right now is about 58k. For that price - 1. No refrigerator/cooler 2. Exposed and unprotected plastic water tank mounted on the bottom of the trailer(how is this "go anywhere"?!) 3. Cheap and ugly window Unit a/c 4. No on demand hot water 5. Milk crate "shelves" with bungee cords 6. Very few USB charge ports 7. Plywood everywhere; looks and feels cheap With the available overland trailers these days built to the hilt with technology and some true innovation, the Mantis Overland does not remotely come close to $58k value. You can tell it was built by "NASA Engineers"...they don't seem to get or understand the overland trailer/camper market. I asked the salesman at the dealership why it was so expensive for what it has and his response was "because they can. People keep paying it". Wow.

@@deadhorse1971 1. You can buy what you want this way, and take it outside; i.e, it's not built in. 2. Correct! 3. AC unit is more efficient, cheap to replace, and allows the trailer to fit into a garage. It makes traditional ACs in RV seems pretty stupid 4. Has a water heater, hot water is 'on demand' at 140 degrees.. 5. Milk crates are better, load up in your house, take crates to the trailer. See through, easy. It's not about replicating an apartment, it's about having a functional living space. I use mine for extensive hunting; the milk crates are brilliant, all tools are visible 6. How many do you need? It comes with 7! As well as four 12 volt outlets 7. To each their own; I like the natural look far more than that stuff Jayco et al use from the 80s. 58K is way too much though. Thankfully, no one pays that.

Hey, Drew, we ran into one of these campers last summer when we were up north Island, past Port Alice exploring the karst formations that are all over the place up there. A single mom of 5!!! had it and she raved about it. Funny looking trailers but she was well off the beaten path up there and knew what she was both doing and talking about. She didn't camp/travel, repeat...she got somewhere and stayed for weeks. I prefer being just a bit more mobile.

Hi drew. *giggles* a friend of mine was talking about wanting a "big" camper but didn't want/have a tow vehicle for one, and was scared about towing it. They mostly wanted it for "set trips" running to set locations or camp grounds. or hauling the trailer south to "snow bird" at a campground for several months. My response was simple. Then don't buy a tow vehicle, buy a large camper but make sure its a 5th wheel model. When you want to move it, book a trucking company to have a truck come down, pick up the load, and transport it. The best part about this is, these companies/drivers have load insurance, so if, heaven forbid, something happens mid haul, it will be the trucks insurance that will cover it. So the camper gets delivered, and you drive down, fly, train, or bus to the location. It actually opens up RV ownership to a wider crowd, especially the elderly or disabled.
@PlayingwithSticks
@PlayingwithSticks 2 жыл бұрын
Great idea! May and I talk about this often but a different subject. A truck. There have been times in our life where we absolutely had to have a truck on a weekly basis. But the last 10 years we really don't need one. Much more practical for us to just rent a truck whenever we need it. Yours takes it a step further and takes out the liability of moving such a larger trailer around. Not to mention the stress it sometimes can cause.

@@PlayingwithSticks yep, picture living in say, new york, deciding you want to go to california, disney world and such, you book your hauling company to pull the trailer, book your trailer park, then, fly out to california, rent a small car, and drive to the trailer park... oh look, your campers there waiting for you. Snow birds, can have their camper moved from their cottage area up north during the summer, to florida. Cost can range widely, costs to have a trailer towed professionally over 1200 miles, can actually be worht it vs the stress, fuel, wear and tear on your own tow vehicle.

While I like the idea of the trailer it doesn't really look modern and a bit homemade. What's with all the brown 70s cushions. The design looks quite "cluttered" inside and not flush and modern. You're right about the aircon. And the contradiction of the guy saying "we designed this trailer to be pulled by most vehicles" at the beginning and then the actual weight make not much sense.
@PlayingwithSticks
@PlayingwithSticks 2 жыл бұрын
My thought on that weight was maybe he was referring to the original trailer. They have the Mantis original and then the Mantis Overland. The original is lighter than the overland due to the components. It definitely has a unique look. To me it is one of those trailers you have to see in person. But, even in person it won't sell everyone. May is not a fan of the colors at all.

The ugly air conditioner is potentially FAR more efficient/easier to run and way, way quieter than your typical RV air conditioner. Modern versions of RC air conditioners offered in america are 10 times the cost of that window unit. There are other window unit options out there that run the fans and pump at variable speeds that have no heavy startup load. In a smaller trailer, 250-350 watts could maintain temperatures on solar power.
@PlayingwithSticks
@PlayingwithSticks 2 жыл бұрын
Love hearing this! And I had no idea that they were quieter. Because we have never needed AC I have never researched the costs. Just after editing this video I looked them up. Wow, that is all I can say. I have paid less for 2 of my trailers than the cost of that AC! We have had a company reach out to us lately called SoftStart. Probably nothing we will be featuring on the channel, but it definitely makes sense for folks wanting to use an AC. Basically spreads that startup load throughout the overall load, reducing the taxing start up effect. Quite a neat little product.

I really like the use of easy to obtain items, multi-use items, and multi-use areas. The trick is easy timely conversions, thus the frustration of the common bed/table that only a few campers have thought of easy bedding storage. A couple of great examples of good multi-use I have seen are kitchen chairs that had flip up seats to hold eating cooking items, and stackable cubes on rollers that were storage, seating, and tables. My own camping bins are storage for cooking, and when stacked are the table for food prep and cooking - if a bit more sturdy, could be used as seats. My two biggest gripes on many campers are a quick easy place to put bedding during the bed/table conversion, and a place to store portable solar panels.

The pop-up roof and the airy design is great but it wouldn't be for me. For the price, I don't expect to see exposed plywood, bungee cords and milk crates. Clothes storage for longer trips would be under the bed, which is a pain when you usually need to get at it when the bed's made. Those thin and hard-looking cushions look like they'll need a mattress topper, which is bulky to store during daytime. Tall or large people will struggle to get up from the dinette around that table, especially on the kitchen's side. I think the water connection right above the power connections is a disaster waiting to happen. Also, for $57k in 2022, I would expect built-in solar and a standard lithium battery. The weight is actually pretty good for something of that size but 510lb tongue weight is a bit much. I can see a lot of potential here and I hope they produce a V2 that evolves the design.

I really appreciate when folks break down their thoughts on a trailer like this. I think it is very beneficial to not only the community but also for the manufacturer to read. I like to think maybe over time comments like this will help drive the industry in the right direction. I think Taxa does a great job listening to owners and make a trailer that makes sense. It will be neat to see what they do in the future with all the feedback.

Cheers @@PlayingwithSticks, I'm glad that my comment didn't come across as just negative criticism because that's not my intention. In case Taxa or someone else writes my comment off as nit-picking... Well... It is nit-picking, but read it with the consideration that my thinking is anchored in the very competitive Australian pop-top camper and caravan market, with lots of mature product lines that don't innovate as much but have a strong focus on refinement, materials and fit & finish.
@PlayingwithSticks
@PlayingwithSticks 2 жыл бұрын
@@Ess_Chalk That is what I am interested in...not the innovation as much as the refinement. Innovation is neat if it is truly with a purpose. But I think in America many companies are just trying to sell a new concept even if it isn't the most practical. Not saying that is the case with Taxa. I think they do try to keep these trailers pretty basic. But I am seeing from the comments there is definitely some room for refinement.

Any solution that requires me to assemble and disassemble my bed or alternately eating/workspace every day is a non-starter and shows poor design consideration. A no-see-um mesh on the tiny window is great. But then I did not see any mention of a similar mesh available for the gaping rear hatch 40 times larger that now opens. Too heavy for a great many of cars or crossovers (often maxing out towing weights between 3000-3500 pounds) when you factor in water, food, etc. A strong “meh.”

The AC thought you have seems to be the consensus on here. Easy to replace, no moisture issues, and much less expensive. A frames are pretty special little campers. They are very well thought out. And with a few simple mods like Slim did to his they are very functional trailers. Really even before the mods they are already functional. The only issue I have with them, which is similar to this trailer is the weight. I often want to pull one, but then I am reminded that it may require a tow vehicle upgrade for many people. Hence why I got the Jeep a couple years back. I wanted to be able to tow more trailers like the A-frame.

@@PlayingwithSticks Agree on all counts. I would love a teardrop but with me, 2 kids that are growing like weeds, and maybe a dog in the near future, the only ones that made sense to me were the big one from the folks in Boulder and the American Teardrop Harrier, and both were out of my price range (one waaaaay more so than the other). The A frame I went with already has the bigger tires and taller suspension, 20 gallons of fresh water, and for boondocking everything I’d use is already on propane or 12v. Add some solar and Bob’s your uncle. Heavier though at 2500/3800, fortunately my daily is a suitable TV.

I have been trying to tracck one down for years. Like you I think the Cricket would be a great fit for our family. Based on going through the Mantis and the Tigermoth I find Taxa's builds are very similar. So I think based on that I would take those two videos and then look at the Cricket features to see if it is a good fit. In terms of form and function I think they did great. If you do a KZbin search from owners you will find there are some issues with leaks and some other minor things. But nothing that will impact the overall life of the trailer beings it is made of metal, not wood. Wel, that is if you fix the leaks obviously. If you let them go you will have the same issues you have with a wood trailer.

Zamp uses SAE connectors. The SAE connector is a typical 12v connector, not a typical solar connector. The expectation with the SAE connector is that you're connecting regulated 12v power. Same connector as a Battery Tender. The most common universal solar panel connector is the MC4. Bigger wire, bigger connector, able to handle the volts and amps generated by solar panels.
@PlayingwithSticks
@PlayingwithSticks 2 жыл бұрын
Now this is interesting. I always thought the Zamp connectors were proprietary. So on these trailers wired for Zamp solar they really are just wired for SAE? Wow, I had no idea. What is Zamp paying these companies to say they are wired for Zamp! Haha. Now is SAE input also compatible with MC4 with the right adapter? Or does it not work that direction? This is definitely not my area of expertise. Thanks a ton for sharing this!
@mikemead2315
@mikemead2315 2 жыл бұрын
Well, MC4/H4 solar connections were never meant as a quick connect. The problem with using the MC4/H4 connectors on solar panels for "quick connects" is they are meant to be snapped together to make a weatherproof low resistance electrical connection and then left alone for years. They need special wrenches to take them apart, and their internal electrical connections are damaged by taking them apart if there is any electricity running through them as the electrical arc damages them. For repeated quick connect utility a quick connect is added by either cutting off the MC4/H4 and replacing with a quick connect or making a MC4/H4 to quick connect adapter.

@@PlayingwithSticks We both have a lot to learn. I just know about the MC4/H4 connectors on permanently mounted solar panels - a pain as quick-connects since they need different special wrenches. On used solar panels, these MC4/H4 connectors need to be rebuilt with new internal electrical parts if internal electrical arcing damaged them if disconnected when still passing electricity (another reason MC4/H4 are not a good quick-connect) - external snap together o-ringed case is fine. A lot of the portable panels come with some kind of quick connect, that I don't have a clue about other than I saw a kit on Amazon with a bunch of power station quick connect converters to all the popular connections. Yikes. I have been using 2 pin trailer connectors for quick connects, because they are cheap and at all box and automotive stores, which seem to look like SAE, so maybe I'm already there by accident.

Plus a bit of nostalgic teardrop shaped aesthetics (some nice rounded smooth contours). Okay I could go on and on. Even after using off road trailers I don't think clearance is that important to me. I need some, but nothing higher than most the industry. I am finding I really like windows and an airy feeling. I still don't need running water, but like room for a refrigerator. Also bathroom and shower is something I still prefer to do outside.

Another great video. I'm really glad you mentioned about the air conditioner. I think they're roughly $50,000 for the unit. I have not seen the man test but I did see the cricket. I actually was not too impressed with the build quality. Two questions, I wonder why they all don't go with lithium batteries nowadays? Also, I'm wondering why they don't have on demand hot water instead of a tank? Oh, by the way. I should have done more research before they installed air-conditioning for me. It is a Dometic but it's 15000 BTU! Slight bit of Overkill wouldn't you think? Thanks for the video!
@PlayingwithSticks
@PlayingwithSticks 2 жыл бұрын
The lithium one is a question many folks have. At first I thought it was because of cold weather camping. But, now I am wondering if it is just a way for them to keep the price down and offer upgrades. As a family we still prefer AGM. But that is because we camp more in colder climates than warmer climates. But lithium technology is getting better every year. At some point it will be a no-brainer for everyone to go lithium. I may have edited it out. But I think the Truma system is a bit of a hybrid? Maybe? I had trouble understanding this. Sounds like 2 gallons of the tank is more like on demand? Maybe that is what the Boost mode is? Or is 2 gallons just always heated up and the remaining 18 cycles through? But, like you said on-demand just makes sense. After using it this summer I couldn't believe it is actually almost instant. I thought it would take much longer than that to heat up the water.
@sierramantrvlnus
@sierramantrvlnus 2 жыл бұрын
Battleborn, sko and others have recently added warming pads to their batteries. I have 140 amp hrs of AGM. Which is great if your careful on usage. I just recently got some dokio 300 watt solar panels to charge the system. But you really can only use 30% of your lead acid batteries before you should charge them again keep them Tip-Top without degrading the cells. Which kind of plays back to your last video where we discussed batteries and solar systems. I think the main issue for me is the Battery Technology since the lithium now can be operated and charge in cold temperatures. And depending on the size of solar panels. Your capability is relying on your solar panel footprint. My durkios are approximately 40 in High by at least five feet long. And that's only 300 watts they are flexible panels. I have another 300 watts on its way which even on a semi cloudy day will charge up my batteries to their capacity. The thought of being completely self sustained electric heat, hot water, lights, induction stove Etc. Would take a lot of solar panel footprint.

Thank you! I thought the same way about this trailer until I saw it in person. A lot of companies call their products NASA inspired. And I never quite know what that means. But when you get in a Taxa Habitat as they call them they really do look like a spaceship. A lot of metal, a lot of angular lines. The wood, the crates, the simplicity all really pair well with this design. Now I say all this, but it is for a very particular buyer. This isn't someone who is looking for a home away from home. When you get in one of these, it really is built for a grownup who still wants to live in a treehouse/fort. It has more of a bunkhouse design than a micro hotel. I was surprised to see so many Tiger Moths and Crickets on the road this summer, especially with the higher price tag. But after getting inside one I really do see why folks are buying them. One scene I accidentally left out in the edit was about the attention to detail. There are just so many little features on this trailer from the high number of gear mounting attachments to simple things like the built in bottle opener. This trailer was built by someone who not only camps frequently, but understands trailers. At this price point I often find this is not the case. They are usually neat "concept" trailers, but lack actual build features that enhance your outdoor experience. Often times I find less is more. But wow is that hard to explain when less equals double the cost. I really appreciate your comment here because I wanted to share my thoughts on this somewhere. I appreciate you giving me the opportunity. Not the trailer for you and me, but I do think is a well thought out trailer.

This is a great question and something we talk about often on the channel. Canvas is a real concern. I think in most cases the manufacturers suggest taking the trailer to your local canvas repair shop. However, if you check out our pop-up trailer video our family has had a pop-up with canvas for over 40 years and it looks almost like new. Basically what I learned, to my surprise, is that if you take care of these hybrid trailers they can last much longer than I thought. Now, I still have my reservations about canvas though. Even if you do take care of it this means more time spent keeping it dry, keeping it properly stored, etc.

I think there was a lost opportunity here. You talk about wanting a dedicated sleeping area. Tell me if you can picture this drew. that popup part... what if they mounted a "rail system" there where you could mount a sleeping loft. maybe have it so it folds in 3 parts, 2 shelf 1 ladder. during the you flip the W fold the ladder and loft up to flush with the back wall of the popup, or maybe push it stright up locking the ladder under it. straight up might have a benifit of not really needing to move the bedding, just swing the ladder under the loft and lock it,then push the loft up and lock it to the roof of the popup... so its at the same angle there. With that you don't need to break down your eating area and there's a clear divide between your eating and sleeping. BUT in cases where you don't want to raise your popup, you CAN use the eating area as a sleep, OR use it as a 2n'd bed for guests. the interior sleeping loft just seems like such a missed opportunity. (this the kind of comment you were talking about in the 100k shout out post :))

Yeah. There have been a few great hidden-bed ideas like yours that unfortunately were not adopted by others. My big issue I found with most "transformer" and hidden beds is what to do with bedding - mattress, bags, blankets, pillows - that take up so much space unless they are folded and squished and put away .... that gets old and takes up space. I want them to go with the bed or just "roll" into their own cubby. Hard side popup Hi-Lo had a drop down bed-over-bed that lifted and locked to the ceiling bedding and all - the best! Some of the old Shasta Compact model had a hinged bed-over-bed that just tipped up in front giving head room sitting at the lower now standard table/bed. Tab has fold up back cushions as part of the table/bed that creates a cubby all the way in back for bedding, and Drew reviewed a big-teardrop with shelf/bunkbed/storage that worked great for kid sleeping and bedding storage. Yeah. Room for improvement as your design suggests. Soon I will solve this age old problem, maybe stealing some of your ideas, and make millions 🤑. Yup ... any day now. I think that a lot of the fun is coming up with new ides. Thanks!

@@mikemead2315 Yep, i was thinking about the drop down effect with bedding, and thinking that using the "pop up tent" loft much in the same way.... where you could "push the bed up" when not in use without breaking it down. essentially giving you the roof tent bed at night, then when you push it up, you get most of the head room back during the day. without the need to get rid of the bedding/sleeping bags/whatever. Thus, making it easier on the camping.

@@mikemead2315 Doing this you'd have the 2 parents in the loft, 2 kids in the bunk beds, thats 4 without an issue. then the 2nd roof top tent external if you have 1-2 more you need. after that in an emergancy you can sleep 1-2 more in the diner area, but thats an "overload" situation where you are exceeding the "sleeps 4 comfortably." but a base sleeps 4 without change, 6 with adding the 2nd roof top tent, works for a growing family nicely, while still not having to worry bout breaking down the dinnet or any sleeping area at all till you want to move. and this means after a big meal or what not, if people are to tired... or if someone wants to take a nap after lunch they have a place to go to do that... without having to fully "clean" the eating area. Which is a big pieve for some.

The whole interior just looks so unfinished and sloppy. If the tent side wasn't open pretty much no one could stand up in that camper so not comfortable to take out in the winter . That shower setup, if the high-end of that tent is about 7' then how is a person that is say 5'6" supposed to hook that curtain up to take a shower? And the fact that the toilet is open so basically you have to close the whole camper up to use your toilet with a modicum of privacy? Looks like a big miss to me for that price point.

Yes, you would be doing a bit of Slim Potatohead Stealth Style Camping in the winter with this trailer. I never thought about the height issue. With my wife we are always thinking height restrictions. It is a big deal.

With pop up open, you still will be comfortable with heaters on when the temperature drops to as low as 15F. People bring it for ski trip ( you need to bring water though) . Talk to Mantis owners.

This summer I saw many more Tiger Moths and Crickets than I ever would have expected on the road. But as for the Mantis I never saw one. I do know though that we have a handful of Mantis owners here in the community. That is why I filmed this trailer in the first place.

In the Mid Atlantic there was a Taxa event last year where we took our mantis for the weekend. We were surprised to see more Mantis than crickets, tiger moth, or the woolly bear. Although we did not see the overland Mantis

That shower and toilet are a hard sell… not sure it’s worth having inside like this.

Yes. That would be the same for us. Do to the length of the video I removed a section that shows how much extra floor space you get if you have the toilet removed. I believe it comes standard without the toilet. Glad you mentioned this.

@@bradbales1938 In terms of shower/toilet it is one of the neatest designs we have seen. But, like you we would rather have the space than maintain an indoor toilet and shower. From our time on the road seems like most people's showers just become their storage closet.

Not worth the price. Why would you design something with your primary goal is that it can fit in your garage. Not impressed. Seems like some clever ideas forced inside an ugly package.

My wife was not a fan of the look either. I thought in person it looked much better than on video or photo. I think the inspiration for this design was people spending 50K on a camper that sits outside and has a lifespan of 4-5 years (aka the big rv industry). Why not build a larger trailer right and give it the ability to stand the test of time. But, yes like you said when you do something like this there will always be tradeoffs.

That's not a camper trailer. That's a habitat, yeah right. It supposed to fit in a residential garage, according to Taxa, but it does not. Frankly I don't like any of their trailers. What Taxa does makes little sense to me. Their trailers have weird shape resulting in inefficiency use of space. Heck, none of their trailers has a rear hitch receiver! How dumb is that!?

It is hard for me to judge this trailer. I think if cost wasn't a factor I would love to have a Tiger Moth or a Cricket. But when you consider the cost and the design you definitely look at it more critically.

Sleeps four, queen + bunkers, since we have a boy and a girl 3. Winter use ( we are ok to bring our own water) 4. Ample storage 5. Less than 4000 lb for east towing. 6. Less canvas is preferred. 7. Some Off road and off grid ability (for dispersed sites use) . Kimberley Kavaran and Taxa Mantis are our only choices after one month intensive search. Why people trash it?
