The real problem is FOMO (fear of missing out) because as someone who played destiny 2, but not from launch, I just completely missed out of the Red Crusade. If you tell story through multi-player, then there will be content that ends up getting phased out every time there is an update, and that's going to end up excluding big chunks of player base because I don't want to watch hours of KZbin recaps for the story of something i paid full price for. This is a bad practice and should be called such.
@David050298 Жыл бұрын
That’s the main reason I decided against getting into Destiny. Knowing I can’t get the “full story” within the game was enough to dissuade me.
@wedemboys420 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, these guys seems to like destiny alot but it's just not that enjoyable of an experience. "Casual" gamer or not, it doesn't have to be esports level but you do have to be the type who invests a lot of consistent time into only one game.....honestly that sounds alot like an esports player.

Microtransactions destroyed the industry. It's clear the dramatic drop in high quality output and everything pivoting to Game-ified shop scams happened when microtransactions were made more popular at the end of Gen 7 (not just horse armor which was one of many tests).

@@wedemboys420 I don’t even know if it’s just casual gamers. I like to hop around to different games and I’ve got a huge back catalogue of games I want to finish. There appears to be this expectation from developers creating live service games that I’ll be playing mostly their game with my limited free time for months/years to come

Agreed, Blizzard games have such an opportunity to jump into other genres or media to expand their world. Overwatch is one of those that I had no idea even had lore, until a bunch of summary videos hit around OW2. In conclusion, still bitter about Starcraft: Ghost because I want to see an Ultralisk from the ground.

I've never played Overwatch but I can still name (or at least describe) several of the original characters because they were such a huge part of pop culture at that time. For me, it was never quite enough to get me to play the game as I didn't have a team of friends to hop on with but I'm sure it pushed a lot of people to pick it up. With Overwatch 2, I haven't seen anything to do with any of the new characters and there is zero reason for me to start playing that game. 100% agree that transmedia with the examples of Arkane, CP Edgerunners, The Witcher show even, are the way to go with these sorts of worlds and IP

Makes one realize how important narrative elements are, even for 'pure' multiplayer games. The most popular multiplayer games today have some sort of backstory for the world, the characters, the seasonal changes. Not to say that the games that just focus on the multiplayer aspects (like maybe Counter Strike or PUBG) aren't successful, but I think people tire of just good mechanics and need some form of story to keep them engaged. All the more reason why Blizzard should get the OW narrative right. Great video as always. Really enjoying the new slate of videos that Gamespot's been putting out :)

Didn't blizzard absorb Vicarious Visions who helped make Destiny 1 to destiny 2 forsaken and also make the tony hawk remaster games?? Why isn't blizzard using their vast experience on making high quality pve games for the ow2 single player mode??? Why just give up??

I really hate that they removed general chat, when waiting in the lobby... So now I have to go on some internet forum to find people to play with? Also that they removed the voting cards by the end of matches.. + When one team wins, you can't even write GG in chat, because it's disabled the same moment a team wins and Play Of the Game comes. - It's a multiplayer game.. But blizzard somehows manages to remove most of all the social aspects to it? WHY?
@Tigerpaw4000 Жыл бұрын
I've never played Overwatch (either one...not really into the genre of game in general) but I agree that there is enormous story potential with that franchise. I've watched a bunch of the character-focused shorts and found them very well done, not just because of the quality of animation but there are always teases about the larger world around the characters. The very first intro cinematic for the game showed a pair of brothers walking through a museum showcasing the history of the world where Overwatch takes place...yet it's ironic that Blizzard has really failed to invest in a product where the story is a focus. It's sad that Overwatch is being handled this way - it was Blizzard's first new IP in decades and have really dropped the ball on this one, as well as let down their die hard fans and perhaps scared off potential new ones.

While I don't disagree with the points your making, and it would probably be profitable for Blizzard to heed them, I can't help but feel a little franchise fatigue. Even with IPs I like, when I see the groups that own and make them endlessly beating their one good dead horse to make "Franchise: The Beat 'Em Up", "Franchise: The Cartoon Miniseries", "Franchise: The Cereal Brand", etc. I can't help but feel exhausted. It's like the Spaceballs bit about merchandizing but mindlessly loyal consumers are the punchline. I can't help but wish they'd have the guts to try and make a new IP from the ground up that could be the *next* Overwatch, but I should probably be sooner wishing for a consumer base that would actually be receptive enough of new IPs for that to be a preferable alternative lol

Games have ballooned into this unsustainable bloat. Disney does this with cinematic universes, e-sports as you mentioned and of course the live service game. Middle men and stock holders chase so many dragons, and thus fail the audience, the product and the brand, routinely. If they can show a number ticking a little bit up during a trend it may make them seem _current_ to other share holders while nothing is really getting accomplished. I’m playing Tears of the Kingdom currently and I get PTSD from the tedium of anything that is neither the sky or the underground. Things are more interesting but it’s over-world still feels impenetrable. That might not be the case for real, but it’s a hard feeling to shake. Games would benefit from being smaller. I think a third dip into this Hyrule would start to see finishing returns if players have _to power through_ the next Zelda, as well. We have a lot of gaming choices. Meanwhile, I don’t know who to spray water on the statue and if I look it up online, I didn’t really _figure it out._ You _don’t_ need a big game to tell a story and you don’t need sprawling moments of just nothing only to to lose track of what you were looking for. Breath of the Wild _was a mistake._ Great Stuff, as always! Edit: if the third in this Breath do the Wild series ended up on this current Switch, I’d buy it to complete the set, if it wound up on the next machine, _I’d slip out of the compulsory investment into this tedium._ I like Nintendo but they cannot and should not bully me into _doing nothing._ It wouldn’t take will a third time to avoid their thrall, boredom undoes their grip. There should be a patch. Edit: I think they should just add updates or amiibos that just drop lots of shiny (even impervious) useful weapons and content into the game, anywhere and at anytime you wish. Something that allows you to engage with it as a game, _as you wish, a true toy box, that lets you break its rules, as you do as a child._ Fortnite, Rolblox and Minecraft are time sinks aimed at kids, don’t sell Tears of the Kingdom to _working adults in its current state._ Don’t discourage your audience. They’re on your side. Work with me Nintendo!

I wish I could understand the uproar, but Overwatch's PvE has always been atrocious imo. I had extremely little faith this new stuff was ever going to be any different in the first place. I'm glad they're doubling down on PvP and competitive stuff, personally.

There's no money in storytelling, and, art. Game publishers DO NOT CARE what gamers want, they only care what their shareholders want. Capitalism is the death of art.

The story isn't bad in my opinion but its the disconnect between the gameplay and the world. For example, Overwatch story has robots and bad guys with the heroes trying to stop them but the game is just a push or defend hero shooter. When there is such a huge gap between the story and gameplay, i would rather just watch the cutscenes on youtube or read wiki.

multiplayer games that are only "multiplayer" to push microtransactions need to f**king die, the marketplace is so oversaturated with them, while well developed single player games like Hogwarts Legacy make billions 🤙 I'm showing my age abit probably but I remember when games used to have dope campaigns and cheats and gaming used to be about fun, not microtransactions. Anything with a multiplayer focus above the main game/story is a red flag for me anyway.
