I went to school with a Laosian kid named Keosuamsetsethbandith. The first time he was called to the office, over the intercom, they called him "keyofsomekindofbandaid", so that became his nickname. He was a bigger kid, and heavily into martial arts, so not many kids had the guts to call him that to his face. He went by Keo, pronounced "Cow", and he was a really good kid. I hope he's doing well, wherever he ended up in life.

very good. And not only the name itself, also all those special characters can give a lot of problems. Some databases will throw errors when they encounter them. Maybe not where you live, but if you want to apply for a visum to travel or work in another country and suddenly you can't fill in your application because you have to fill in the name as it is on your passport but the form doesn't allow for certain characters, it will give you a lot of trouble to sort out. Sha-Dw@*il'ah for instance. A lot of programming languages use * as sign for a comment and if the database is not correctly designed (or it's from a country where this problem doesn't exist, like Iceland with it's list of pre-approved names and so they didn't plan for it), it can throw errors all over the place.

The same here in Germany. Protecting the child from later denigration and ridicule is more important than the fashionable whims of the parents. Some parents actually go to court because they just don't want to understand why they are not allowed to call their child "Pumuckel" (a character in a children's programme) or "Fliegenpilz" (Fly agaric), for example. And of course they fail.

My niece taught as a substitute teacher for just one year (no idea how that was just subbing, but it was), and when she was offered the position of school secretary in a different school the following year, she took it. She became an IT tech for the public schools just two years after that, as well as the volleyball coach for one of the high schools, and she absolutely loves her two positions now. She said she'll never go back to teaching except as a substitute just one or two days in any month, never full-time!

I have two friends who are teachers, and they said every year they dread seeing what sort of names they are going to have to try and say. One said she has had 5th graders tell her they hate their parents for naming them the things they have. Which is sad, when you think about a 5th grader already having that much anger towards their parents, but Mom and Dad are to blame when they name their kid something like Avocado Springs.

In my country, you can't use a name that sounds similar to food, drugs, brands, something stupid or something with a negative connotation and is spelled in a way that no one needs a tutorial to read it. There's no point in hiring someone who has to have their name corrected everytime someone needs to talk to them. At the very least provide a nickname or a shortened form of said given name that can be easily substituted. You could be called "Tutankhnefertitikhamun" but if everyone already decided you can be referred to as "Nev", we will get along just fine.

Hell, my name itself is simple and people still get it wrong so I have to stick to a nickname. Years ago, working the night shift in a call center for telephone triage by registered nurses, another one lost it after a call. I was a SNAP (Food Stamp) caseworker. One of my clients named her child “ABCDE”. I asked how to pronounce it and the client said, “Ahhbeesuhhdee.” And you know how you hear words come out of your mouth, but you didn’t mean to say them out loud? I heard myself say, “You named your daughter ‘Obesity’?” She repeated, “no, it’s Ahhhbeeesuhhhhdee.” I told her, children can be mean and you can still ask to change her name to something other kids won’t tease her about. She told me she liked the name and she wasn’t changing it. Poor kid…

My husband grew up in W-TX “Billy Bob” country where they make up names. His SIL was named for her parents, Rena and Lee; her name was Renalee. She married my husband’s brother Ed. They named their daughter Edreann (Ed-Re-Ann). Husband’s sister’s name was LaJuan. Nobody knows where that came from because the family wasn’t Mexican. Also, boys had to be named after their fathers. My MIL was martied twice. Had 2 sons from 1st marriage, one named after her ex-husband and called Junior. By the time he was 40 and 6 feet 3, Junior had become Junie. So when my husband was born in MIL’s 2nd marriage, they already had a Junior/Junie, so my husband became Sonny. MIL was shocked and offended when I declined to name our son after my husband. I told her that hell would freeze over before I would give my kid the middle name Elmer!

There's nothing weird or bad about any of those names. I guess you just wanted to rag on Texas. And trash your husband's name. Elmer is a name of Germanic British origin. The given name originated as a surname, a medieval variant of the given name Aylmer, derived from Old English æþel (noble) and mær (famous). It was adopted as a given name in the United States, in honor of the popularity of the brothers Ebenezer and Jonathan Elmer, leading supporters of the American Revolution.

Many years ago a relative of mine encountered a woman with a baby at the doctor's office, they got to talking and my relative asked the baby's name the mother responded her name is placenta. My relative had to keep their composure saying um what was their name again thinking they had not heard correctly the mother repeated placenta. For those of you that have no idea what a placenta is it is the after birth a woman expells from her body after giving birth and looks like a large piece of uncooked liver. I seriously hope that child changed their name as soon as they possibly could.

Ok, well this is probably a bit of a '90s name by now, but I met two parents of "Lavatoria" kids. I still remember it because that's what parents called their babies. I guess they were unaware that for many of us, the lavatory is what Americans call, "the bathroom". In my country, the bath was hardly ever in the same room as the lavatory - but that is beside the point. Naming your kid after the bathroom is just not fair nor sensible. This is your kid - for life.
