Also, another really important point: You don't have to write about something related to you academic interests . In fact, it's really refreshing when people don't. If you do write about your academics, keep it to a small mention so it's not the whole point of the essay.

Summary: 1. No vague references to life change; "realization", "perspective that changed"; without detailing how it happened, which is the most important part. The admissions officer won't 'get' what you're talking about, and have read this essay tons of times already. 2. Retrain theatrics or overdramatization. Generally comes off as unpleasant. Don't go into detail on things that are irrelevant to your message. You're not writing an action/drama novel. Treat the reader as a close friend or adult that you know. Focus on conveying the key aspects of yourself, not conveying your propensity for writing advanced literature.

Melody Liu these are for real the notes I just wrote down almost WORD for WORD!! Seriously freaky.... 😳

So I just wanted to know: I realize that it’s not great to write about “realization” or whatever but...I had a huge flaw with attitude and ego that made a lot of people not like being around me. But my growth and journey from there helped define who I was and I feel that even though I didn’t like that chapter, it was an important part of my life. Do you think this would work?
@faizaimazhar4 жыл бұрын
@@KM-wb1yd definitely, i think you should explain what made you change and how you overcame it as well. it would be meaningful if you could convince the reader that you really have changed and the old you is in the distant past so that they dont question that you may still fall back to those old behavioural patterns

Hi @Danielle du Preez I have a question. My intended major is real estate in college and I am aware that you do not advise students to write anything related to the major. But I am planning to write an essay about my hobby (building a miniature model and real houses) and how it helped me in personal growth. Do you think this is considered relatable to the major I want to study?
@kentzeng51836 жыл бұрын
Ayyy thanks for the vids!! Could you give a concrete example of using “theatrics”?
@danielledupreez6 жыл бұрын
Yeah sure! “I woke up that morning and I knew. I just knew. Today would be the day that my life would change. And since then, nothing has ever been the same.” It’s cool for a fiction novel, but kinda of dissonant with the tone of a personal essay.

I have to write my essay soon. I’m going to start it tonight I think, but I don’t know how to write an essay. How can I write about my experience moving to North Carolina from Ireland when I was 9? There wasn’t really anything spectacular that happened

I'm from Nicaragua and the police killed my 15 year old cousin just because he was in a pacific protest and that changed my perspective of life, so i wanted to write my essay about that including some details of course, but I'm not sure if it's a good idea because a lot of people including my counselor said that i should write about things like my major. What do you think? Should I write about that experience or not? By the way i love your channel, it's really helpful
@danielledupreez5 жыл бұрын
Please please please don’t write about your major. That is such bad advice. It comes of as extremely boring 99% of the time. It’s also hard to write a non-vague essay about a shift in perspective, but if you nail that one, its going to be an awesome essay, whereas I have never read an awesome essay that has more than a tangential reference to a major.

Hi, I am writing my common app essay and I'm having trouble understanding how free prompt 7 is.
@danielledupreez5 жыл бұрын
I think the point of the Common App essay having prompts is to remedy the ambiguity that comes with calling it a "personal statement" and to allow some relatively minor degree of greater flexibility in what you can write, but the Common App essay is really just a personal statement. You can write about whatever you want, but it should communicate some essence of you that is both attractive and memorable in a way that speaks to the reader. When I edit Common App essays, I don't pay attention to which prompt the student chose at all, and I'm willing to bet neither does the admissions officer. *The prompts are there to make you feel better. Write about whatever topic you want, as long as it accomplishes the function of the essay.*
