Here are my Pleione orchids in full vegetative growth season. The new bulbs (or pseudobulbs) are starting to form, leaves are growing considerably big and roots are taking over the pot. I water them just as the media approaches dryness and fertilize them along with my other orchids.

Wow, I never expected these little bulbs to produce those huge, shiny leaves. When they first bloomed for you they were amazing and I was disappointed that they withered so quickly. But you know what, even as a green plant it's still very impressive. It would look great in any home in a hanged basket near the window.

Twin City Orchids that is perfectly fine, this orchid is terrestrial :) I use bark and sphagnum moss and it works as well :)

Danny! Your plant looks AMAZING! mine is so small in comparison. I'm sure it's a difference in variety.

Hi Danny! Nice video! I just wanna ask (maybe you could make a video about it) why do my orchids die of rot very fast when I use moss? I am wondering how people, especially in the USA, manage to use pure sphagnum moss as potting media without rotting all the roots? When I bought my first orchid (dendrobium hybrid) it was potted two lage coconut husk peices. I noticed that the coconut husk dried very quickly. So what I did was, I took some small pieces of moss and i put it on the top of the coco husk. I used a very little amount of moss. The next day, I noticed that the roots were brown and the canes were yellowing. I asked my friend if I could still saved but he said that it's too late. From then on, I used pure coco cubes or pure charcoal. Did the weather somehow affected and contributed to the rotting? The weather during that time was very very hot so I figured out that the moss will dry out fast, which, obviously, did not do. Sorry for the long comment 😁 Btw, I'm from the Philippines 😊

Tien Ramos Hi, well root rot happens when roots are suffocated, moss is a very water retentive media and if used incorrectly it can cause suffocation of the roots. However roots don't rot in one day, it takes time. I suspect your orchid had a previous issue that intensified when adding moss. In any case, as a general rule, moss retains a lot of water and can be bad in a very humid environment because it dries very slow. Maybe in your region the weather is very very humid so you don't really need moss, but a more airy mixture like bark or charcoal. I do have a video on what is root rot, but maybe I will make a how to use moss video as well and explain how to use or if it is needed :) hope this helps!

Awesome plant Danni, The leaves a gorgeous with the crystal pleats, She sure is a big girl, What happens with the dying bulbs with the new growths, Do they get re-absorbed into the plant? Rosemary :-)

@MissOrchidGirl 9 жыл бұрын
Rosemary457 yes I believe they feed the new growth until they become depleted :) they are removed when this orchid goes into dormancy.

+tulika mehra hello, well I think that it is better to keep orchids that will do some of the work as well and be more tolerant to high temperatures than others. If you keep a cool grower there is no other way to grow it but to keep it in a cool room with air conditioning, but if the orchids are tolerant to hear all is much easier. Here is a video with warmth tolerant orchid species kzbin.info/www/bejne/d6iuqWhuiLScrsk also by keeping them in a windy location and in bright shade, temps will be lower as well. Hope this helps :D

I have a similar orchid well at least I think so a Phaius tankervillea? Right now the leaves are sort of yellowish, I did have it in my window. When I received the plant some of the leaves had black areas. Is my plant sick? How can I help my poor orchid? :(
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 9 жыл бұрын
kaykaybobay that is a terrestrial orchid as well. well first you need to determine why the yellow leaves, read up on this orchid and see what light it prefers, maybe it is getting too much sun. second learn when this orchid wants water and also what type of media she prefers, maybe something is wrong there or you are not watering correctly. I don;t have one so I am not sure about it, but there is a lot of info on the internet. about the black spots, if they seem to spread, cut the affected portion of the leaf that has the black spot, you need to cut under the spot into healthy tissue so it doesn't spread more. if it doesn't spread, it might just be sunburn. offer a lot of ventilation as well, so leave an opened window or a fan in the room. good luck!

Thanos syn well as long as it is special for plants and isn't toxic for the roots it should be ok, never tried it but why not, try it with one orchid first though and see how it goes
