I bought the A2Z about 3 months ago after they upgraded to the pro with a better release button on it. I used it to charge my Chevy Bolt on a Version 3 Tesla charger about a month ago when it first opened for Chevy. It is a great option if you are needing a charge and there is a shortage of CCS handled fast charger but the cost is the highest in my province and there are few version 3 in my area. I am glad to see that some people in certain areas will have another option to make it easier to change to BEV and not have range anxiety. Thanks for sharing a great video. I like A2Z by the way as it is a Canadian company and State of Charge did an in depth review and confirms it is a well designed adapter.

Why make an off quality adapter? They should all be 500a and no less... How do you keep them from being used on other vehicles??? This was not thought out...
@plugandplayEVКүн бұрын
Keeps costs down, I suppose. But it can't be that much and it would be easier to avoid criticism with a white-labeled 500A adapter. Nonetheless, I don't see that either automaker should be held to task for a driver trying to use one brand's product with another OEM's model. If they want a different spec for a different model, the owner should get it from an official source or do their homework and buy a third-party product that fits the bill.

Thanks, Steve! Merry Christmas! Do we know whether the Hyundai/KIA with native J3400 will be capable of faster charging on the 400 V Superchargers?
@plugandplayEV11 сағат бұрын
Yes, the Hyundai engineers claim they've modestly upped the power delivery at Superchargers to around 135 kW. Still half the power of the most-capable non-Superchargers, so it will be a weird world of "yay J3400 port/where's my CCS adapter?" for a year or two if they want sub-20 minutes to 80% charging. And Merry Christmas!

I can't see Hyundai E-GMP vehicles not getting Supercharger access on the same day as Kia. It's the same platform.

Makes sense to me. Although they do have their brand vagaries, such as Kia only extending the adapter offer to certain models while Hyundai offers them to all. But I'd expect 1/15/25 to be the date for both, of that holds true for Kia.

Great news for Hyundai owners. Glad they are making them available for free. I saw Tom at State of Charge pointing out that they are only 350a. So there is some concern. Tom said they are using a Korean contract manufacturer for the adapters. I had a question for you regarding battery preconditioning before departing on a trip. Does the Hyundai have a battery precondition before departure function to warm batteries before leaving? I was searching around and I don't see anything about that capability for the Ioniq 5. Seems like a simple overlooked feature if that is the case.
@plugandplayEVКүн бұрын
I don't see the issue with a brand-specific adapter, tbh. If someone wants a better product, stump up $150 for the A2Z and avoid using a Kia-branded unit on a non-Kia EV. Re. pack preconditioning on departure, no, there's nothing as clever as that unfortunately. It could be fudged by navigating to a fast charger (in native nav system) prior to departure, but the system isn't flexible enough to do anything more than start battery heating when it's 25-30 miles out from a fast charger. It's better than what came before it, but nowhere near as good as the scheduled conditioning or manual heating options that owners have asked for.

I assume this is the same 350A adapter as KIA?
@plugandplayEVКүн бұрын
Nothing confirmed but it wouldn't be a surprise. Given that it's a freebie designated for use with EGMP models specifically, that seems fine to me. It shouldn't be expected that it would perform ideally with other EVs. If there's any resale market, caveat emptor.

I'm a current owner of a 2020 CPO Kona Electric. Does this apply to used Hyundai owners or just original owners?
@plugandplayEVКүн бұрын
Unclear from the press release, but likely it will be one per VIN so current owner will get the freebie.

@plugandplayEV thanks Steve. EA price in southern NH is a bit high now so this would be helpful in my area. My charge port I think is in an ideal spot for any charger. Merry Christmas.
@plugandplayEVКүн бұрын
Agreed. Especially where Tesla has time of use rates, prices can be close to L2 charging. Merry Christmas!

I must admit to being very surprised Hyundai decided to provide a free J3400 adapter for so many of its existing EV owners. Thank you Hyundai.
@plugandplayEVКүн бұрын
Me too. I think most assumed they would go the GM route, rather than the Ford. Happy with their decision and a relatively inexpensive investment in customer goodwill, IMO.

RE 350A limit, this will likely not be an issue for the eGMP platforms as that is plenty if the inverter can only produce ~100 KW. It WILL be an issue if you try to use the adapter with pretty much any other vehicle that can charge at over 150 KW
@plugandplayEVКүн бұрын
Exactly. But for me, anyone using a specifically branded product on another brand's model and expecting the same results has no real recourse. If the only impact is slightly lower charging power for a model that probably shouldn't be using that adapter anyway, I think they'll just have to live with that.

There are standards of practice and specifications for a reason. Per Tom M vid out yesterday, 22-24 eGMPs have a max 350a internal flow limit, so Kia (likely H + G) adapters ARE spec’d for the ‘intended’ use case. That’s “fine” until someone not aware of the design limitation vs Tesla v3+ SC capability (500a, for now) decides to sell them on eBay or give to a friend with an EV that does access up to 500a. Nice intention, not a great practice for a mainstream manufacturer.
