Oh man, I’m so glad I found this video. It’s the start of the winter season up here in the Colorado Rockies and on my Laars JVS 225 in addition to a dirty glycol issue that I think I’ve got a handle on until next summer when my plumber does a complete flush I find I have to drain air directly from the Grundfos circ pump every so often which - as I see from your remarks - the open vent top should not be on the inlet side of the pump: which it is! If I knew how, I’d send you a picture. I’ve got nothing to lose, I closed the cap, I’ll see what happens. I’m having to run the pump on high vice medium which may help with my flow issue across the heat exchanger that was making a racket but I couldn’t figure where I was getting air from out of the Grundfos. Thanks, man, hope this helps me. If it works, I’ll let you know. ✌🏼

Top man for this part in depth explanation and info. Mine (well the top half brass part and float ) is in a JAGUAR 28 KTV J, the body is bespoke and part of the pump assembly, the issue with this is, is the part is obsolete. So a good old clean, especially around the spring loaded pin that seats into a baby o-ring. A good clean was required. (Touch wood) this has fixed the problem on a 21+ year old boiler !

Originally auto air vents were for filling purposes only. When the system was full with all air out, you tighten it up. Otherwise you might get a leak and stained ceiling.

Great video many thanks. Separate isolation valve sounds good idea for permanently energised apps. Presumably they fail earlier in hard water areas. Interesting to cut one open that's failed. Can you do a video sometime on airlock theory. I'm thinking surface tension can be involved, so don't put filters and restrictions in the pipe like small bore iso valves. You will understand and explain it all much better. Hope the tooth's better soon.

Hi ya, enjoy watching your videos and learnt a lot and put in to practice. We will be moving into a inherited house soon that had a sludged up system. I'm in maintenance as a job so I'm not shy in trying new tasks. I've drained and flushed several times, removed radiators and manually flushed out. Installed a filter near boiler return after running for several weeks with cleaner, flushed again added inhibitor and all working better but not right still. Its a Y type F&E system that has been changed at some point to a feed and vent from tank in 22mm. I've removed the bypass and capped off pipes for now as I thought both sides were hot to quickly and found the valve full of black debris so my guess must have been right. I've a towel rad with open lock shields and not all rads have TRV's so should be okay until I replace the valve. Leading to this video. There is a manual air vent on a 90° drop (T piece rad feed one side to air vent other side) from pump to radiator feed. The air vent is only about 6" from the T piece. Every time I open the air cap there is air in it. Its a large system 15 radiators and down stairs take a lot longer to get heat than upstairs. I've balanced all rads and now all get hot but slow downstairs. I think there has been flow back/ fill to header as the tank goes brown and white quick. Do you think a automatic bottle air vent about 12" above the T piece will help downstairs by having no trapped air? Thanks James. Holding tight 😀

You replied to someone who asked about whether to use bottle vents on a shower feed from a loft, saying to use them only in heating systems only. I have two on the peak of my shower fed airing cupboard, up into loft, down into bathroom. They are at the top of the feed. With the vents closed...When I turn the shower off the pump does a weird off for a second, on for a second, off, on, etc until I cut the electrical supply to the pump. If I open the vents, when the shower is turned off I get spurts of water come from the vents! I assume all this grief is because the bottle vents are not the right tool for the job. But what is!? No shower/man smell is only going to lead to 'marital complications'. Grief no man should have to endure!

I have UFH and the Flow Meters all have trapped air after a "Power Flush" and recommision. These are on the botton Supply Pipe instead of the Return on top with Actuators. Is this a problem to get the air out if the Auto Vents at the end of both are ceased up? Is it really bad in the system as it has not made it noisy yet?

Ive got one of these bad boys on my potterton puma 80se, a relic I know 8) . having occasional problems with what I thinks an air loc around the circ pump, when it refuses to circulate makes it makes a whooshing bubbly sound and a bloop bloop when you shut the boiler down, like air going back up into the exchanger. Theres one of these auto air vents to the top left of the boiler so will change that out. Cheers man ;)

Thanks. Just a note , that "cap" you say will keep the water from coming out should the ballcock get fouled, is not a cap, but a second vent. It's designed to swell up inside if water reaches it. That way air can still go out this "cap" yet still remain water proof if the vent fails. Cheers.

My central heating is losing about 1/2 to 3/4 bar of pressure a day. I am bleeding a large quantity of air from my radiator in my lounge all the time but no where else. I have had auto air vents fitted in February when I had a new boiler fitted and because there appears to be no leak anywhere, I inspected the air vents and they have blue/greenish corrosion on them. Could this be causing the problem ? Thanks.

The AAV has black solution leaking and going down the pipes in the airing cupboard. One engineer turned it off but did not install a new AAV, 3 months later another engineer has just turned it back on as he said it causes a build up of air and pressure in your boiler system which will cause the heating system to fail/break down. You said in your video to turn it off if water comes out, so now I'm not sure if it should be turned off or kept on?? Either way it will cause issues. Please can you help! Thanks Emma

Simply put a small service valve below the automatic air vent and, if it becomes leaky, then just shut it off and swap the air vent over. Service valves are incredibly cheap, especially if you buy them in tens and massive time savers. nb. on plumbers not putting in bleed systems, I have just had to fit a couple to my disabled brother's bungalow as the clowns who put the system in, which has lots of inverted loops, didn't fit any form of venting in and the combi was dropping out due to pressure issues as air built up and the liquid was being ejected as air expands more that water as it gets hot. Also, it looks like I might need to put in a supplementary expansion vessel, as the small one in the boiler seems to struggle somewhat with what is a lot of water due to very large radiators.

Hi I changed my pump on my train on combi boiler the other day and drained system. I’m now going to put in inhibitor and usually put it in around the auto air vent (bottle type) as it’s the highest part on the system but when I was undoing the compression fitting water was coming out, should I just undo it and accept some water will come out or is there something wrong with the system. There was a new pressure cyclinder fitted also. Combi seems to be working great. It is 14yr old Thanks Ewan

The vent pipe coming from the top of the tank started to fill the tank with water which made it to overflow the tank and because the water coming fast the drain pipe was not coping with the flow so water started to come from the ceilings. Any idea. The system I have is 21 years old Abd is boiler with tank not compi boiler

Hi, having an absolute nightmare with boiler. Not working for 2 and a half weeks. Had several plumbers out, each replacing a different part on the boiler (thankfully its a renal property, top floor apartment). However, none of them have fixed it. Boiler fails to ignite or when it does it switched itself off after an almighty roar. Now, last week the plumber burst a pipe in the loft and had to replace it as water was coming through the roof. He also explained about having the up and down pipes you explained. We have no automatic air vents on the system and they have suggest to install these, however I havent heard anything about it since. Will this solve my problem!?

plumberparts just a basic dummies start sort of thing, I have watched your videos and identified my system but someone told me one name n you say another so I'm not 100%, maybe if you did a video of the different types of systems found in UK homes and maybe the different names ie, open vented system also known as ???? mine is open vented with tank in cupboard and a tank in loft but i wanted to put a pump in line to raise hot water pressure, but not sure where to put it, keep up the good work, your video's are well presented and have a touch of humour which makes them unique to the rest.

Great video but remained unclear as to whether the nipple should be finger tight or loosened off a touch?
