The best part of this video is that you actually posted it. How many plumbers out there would’ve trashed it cause something went wrong, it didn’t go smooth, or you missed a step. Bottom line is there’s more aspects to plumbing than any other trade out there and a lot to know. Atta boy Chuck, for posting a video that didn’t go perfect and being human. Keep it up.

One of my very first service calls solo many years ago was to a hotel for a shower valve issue...i learned a valuable lesson to never trust a maintenance guy that says he shut the water off to the unit. I pulled the cartridge and the water pressure was super high, it was spraying everywhere and i slipped and fell into the tub in a panic. Plumbing ain’t easy haha

New summer plumbing attire , water cooled clothes, any more water in the tub and you could have gone SUP LOL. Learning how to repair the multitude of faucets, toilets , pressure & thermostatic valves , steam traps, and everything that makes up a plumbing system is what deems a person a true mechanic at his trade. 👷🏻

Hey Chuck, that valve has integral shut off valves. Hot and cold, you use a flat head screwdriver to shut them off. I generally use a 1” wide wood chisel to remove the balancing spool. This type of work is my bread and butter Bro. Why call Moen and get the part? I use Amazon if a can. They are usually less expensive and quicker. The cheapest Moen 1423 balancing spool I found was $59.95. What was Moen charging, @ $104.00 let me help you get your company running efficiently Chuck.

Thanks for the tip! I asked moen tech support if valves were off can I pull spool....sure.....NOT!!! I was gonna have AB run down and shut off again and we both heard him say ya we good.....thankfully it was summer and very hot out. I got soaked.

Moen did agree to send parts.....Me personally I wanted to change valve...No access so we chose this route.

One the cartridge you will see the hole in the brass have that faceing towards the ceiling and hot and cold will be correct. The white plastic piece that comes in the box with the new cartridge is good for two things. Breaking the hold cartridge loose and to push the new one all the way home so you can get the clip back on. Definitely don't try to spin the balance spool with a normal screw driver did that once and had to change the whole valve. I use the biggest slot screw driver I can find.

splish splash chuck was taking an unscheduled bath. didn't you show right before that shutting the spools off them turning the water on and it which appeared to still be flowing full cold? they'll often get a chunk of sediment or solder ball stuck in the seat are, then not shut off fully or you just didn't get it turned off fully the first time

I dont know why i travel the repair road...such bs.....when am i gonna learn.
@throttlebottle59064 жыл бұрын
@@ChuckBarron I meant right after shutting off the "service stops" brain fart said spools. but pretty sure you turned them off then turned valve on and had full "cold" flow coming out still. unless that was just the editing jumping around? we've all taken the failed service stop bath before lol

SHUT. THE. WATER. OFFFFFFFFFFFF......
@throttlebottle59064 жыл бұрын
@@ChuckBarron turning it off would be a great option, that doesn't work in hotels, where 1" runs vertical feeding multiple back to back bathrooms/floors. unless the place is mostly vacant, you'll end with multiple call of anger, hate and rage, as you're kicked off the job :)
@darrinscoilsclouds14984 жыл бұрын
From the beginning of the video the type of valve no hot water I’m yelling at the screen it’s the balancing spool. Then you have the spool in your hand I’m yelling at the screen again shake it shake it if it doesn’t rattle it’s no good. When you get the new spool take the new one and the old one shake them both you’ll notice the new one will click back-and-forth the old one is seized. That’s how you tell the spool is no good. Should be in stock at local supply house and Home Depot. 20 CT master plumber here

You seldom need to replace the spool,Hercules makes a product called Calci solve I carry it on the truck,it takes about 30 min to do it correctly but works like a charm,of course if you damage the old one you'll be getting a new one.
