How can you be a Christian or a Muslim and a buddhist monk?

My understanding is that Buddhism in the Plum Village tradition is not a religion, and that it is a practice for everyone. Thich Nhat Hanh has referenced God and Jesus and has said in his meditations something like, "You may invite Jesus Christ (to sit with you)", meaning the energy of God and Jesus (or whatever name you prefer) is always within you.
