Plunged into DARKNESS in the Tunnel … a SCARY moment! - NARROWBOAT Living Ep102

We start with our usual slow-paced, relaxing cruise, in our NARROWBOAT Floating Home, along the Grand Union canal, from Weedon Bec to Whilton Marina. We have a BBQ, and in the morning, a lovely cooked breakfast at the marina café with Nikki, and meet the new owner Mario. We work our way up the Buckby double lock flight and head towards Braunston Tunnel, the approach to the tunnel is just beautiful, sounds of nature, greenery & birdsong …. but in the tunnel we have a SCARY moment!! 😱
We MOOR near to the Admiral Nelson pub, see Morris Dancing, have a family visit, we see friends Wes & Amy and get to see some of the historic working boats getting ready for the weekend’s rally!
Our NEXT VIDEO will be the Historic Boat Parade and a look around the rally stalls!

I love the reflections in the canals, be it sky,clouds,trees or bridges. Love it when a bridge makes a complete circle. Aren't all the various bridges magnificent not like the concrete lumps we now put up?

Yes, you’re definitely like me, I love seeing the old bridges, so much work and effort went into them, not like the pre-cast concrete bland structures they build today. Hi Eric, yes the rope shop is brilliant, you can watch them making the ropes and fenders, and they’ll make them to the specific sizes you want too! Hi guys beautiful as ever, the greenery and foliage is just stunning over there. It's bloomin cold here at the moment frost on the lawn in the morning and rug up weather.🥶 25 degrees is perfect weather for taking my MG out, I love driving through the Adelaide hills with the top down and stopping at a country bakery for a pasty and a chocolate donut.😌 Come Christmas time here it gets so hot sometimes up to 45 degrees, so hot the tar on the roads starts to melt.🥵 So we stay in as much as possible unless we are visiting family and friends or going to the beach latter in the afternoon. Those old boats are beautiful so much history being kept alive, That's not to say The Rhapsody In Blue is an ugly duckling she's stunning as well.😆 Oh well stay safe guy's and I'll see you on the next one.👍🏻👍🏻❤

Such beautiful views there before the first mooring. The Answer in Houston for the road traffic noise was to build these bloody great big sound walls.. ruined the view an they all turned into ugly graffiti billboards. We all just adore Nikki and Finn! She's got too be the most famous non vlogger on the cut haha! And I love the sound of her engine. I actually worked in a tunnel for eight years with the Texas Highway Department. it was called the Baytown -Laporte tunnel. 1 and a quarter miles long. can be scary when completely dark.. I love the old boats but your still stands out as the nicest and tidiest boat on the cut 😊 Cheers you All an Be Safe!

Hey guys, I notice that a lot of the out of the way mooring spots along the canals are overgrown but, could you grab a weed eater (not sure what you guys call them) and cut the grass/weeds if you wanted to moor in one or is that something that the CRT frowns on? Hi Roger, we have a pair of shears for when the moorings are overgrown, we are thinking of getting a small cordless strimmer. The CRT used to trim to the edges and keep the banks tidy, but in the last few years have changed their policy and only do a path in the middle of the towpath, so we have to do it ourselves. In some places it can be dangerous, as you can’t see if there are any holes when everything is overgrown, plus you end up with ants nests, wasp nests and all sorts, so it makes mooring up a little more difficult sometimes. We do enjoy the ‘middle of nowhere’ moorings though, a little gardening is worth it when you get the lovely views! Thanks Roger! xx

Hiya matey! Yes, I couldn’t believe it when the lights went out, it was quite scary, absolutely no light whatsoever, in a cold, damp, dark tunnel, not somewhere you want to be with no lights! Thankfully he’d only leant on the switch so it was only brief! 🫣 Lol, think we’ve had 5 BBQ’s so far this year, a much better count than last year, we only had two!! 🤪 Thank you, speak soon! xx ❤️

Such beautiful scenery. I have a question or two, if you don't mind. From time to time, you refer to time-limited moorings. 2 days, 2 weeks, etc. I also see "groomed" moorings and "wild" moorings in use. My questions are: How do you tell how long you can stay at a mooring, .... Are you allowed to moor anywhere on the channel, groomed or otherwise, and lastly ... Can you trim the grass when you choose a wild or overgrown site? Brent H.

Hi Brent, 1. There are posts that say how long you can moor if restricted, but if there are no posts then you can moor for 14 days. 2. Yes, unless there are signs saying NO MOORING 3. Yes, CRT used to keep the verges clear, but have changed their policy in recent years, so we do it ourselves Hope this helps 😃 Thank you! xx

Is the canal system restricted to only England or does is extend into Scotland and Wales also.

Hi Bill, the canals of England and Wales are connected, in fact we spent the winter of 2022 on the Llangollen canal in north Wales, however, the Scottish canals are separate. They used to all be connected, but years ago when motorways arrived, they built one right through a canal, thus chopping it in two and separating England and Scotland. We could have our boat transported to the Scottish waterways if ever we got tired of England and Wales, but I shouldn’t see that happening for a loooong time! We could however hire a boat and go for a holiday on the Scottish canals, there are some stunning places there! Thanks Bill xx
