This video helps us in visualizing how to change request flows among various processes.
What is a Change Request? It is a tool for a change in the established plan or project document. So we should have a plan in place before we raise a change request.
Initiating and planning group has nothing to do with Change Request. These process groups don’t take change request as input & most of the time not as output (Procurement planning being an exception).
Executing and Monitoring & Control process groups deal with changes. In this video, you will see how the change request gets generated at various places.
In Executing Process Group you may or may not realize Change Requests. Change Requests goes directly to Integrated Change Control for further action. In case you don’t realize any change then the output is Work Performance Data (WPD), which go to the respective Knowledge Area Controlling Process. Here WPD can either generate another change requests or Work Performance Information (WPI). In the case of WPI as an output, it goes to Monitoring & Control where there are 2 possibilities, one is change request being generated, else Work Performance Report is generated. In the case of Change Request, it goes to “Approve/Reject/Deferred.”
Once a change request is received, the project team should not act on it immediately. They should first do impact analysis, it is then sent to respective stakeholder for decision making followed by a decision on the change requests. CRs can be approved, reject or deferred. Then these changes are logged in ChangeLog, a repository of detail of all the changes.
Then based on the changelog update, the project management plan is updated followed by communicating it to respective stakeholders.

Great explanation Saket. I have a question.. is it the same process if CR comes from the Customer and that is a new requirement ( scope creep) also? If not, what we need to do first when we receive the CR from Customer?

In case of PMP, anything which is managed with Change Control is not scope creep, things which is done without following any change process are needs to be controlled. So what you do when Customer Raise a new requirement, you follow your change management plan, your plan most likely you to suggest raising change request if you are following predictive lifecycle.

In Business Domain the PMI has briefly mentioned on Org Change Management, as of now people are not getting any specific questions on these models. In our class we teach Kotter's so people are aware. Some of these model are added in PMBOK 7 but not yet part of PMI's PMP exam Content Outline.

I have a doubt here. Do we need to log the CR before impact analysis or is it okay to log after approve/ reject? Because i had seen in some videos that CR is logging as an initial step. This is really confusing as some questions are coming from this topic that what we do first.

Yes, change request comes first. Change requests are recorded first before further analysis. Even in Adaptive life cycle, where we manage change organically, every item goes in the backlog. So in Summary, we record change request even if it comes verbally.

@@007binesh Change Log is not equal to Change Request. It is a document which is continuously get updated for important activities which take place during the processing of a change request. The change log is updated when- A change request comes When a change request is approved, rejected, or deferred In general, most of the details on the change log comes directly from the change request form that the project team uses.

Dear Sir Saket, i have related query, When change request has been approved, it is then a PM should update the Project Management Plan & Documents? or when the approved change request has been implemented, after implementation the Project Plan & Docs get updated? regards,

Project Plan and Project Documents help you in execution. That is why you are expected to update them after getting Approval of change request.
