I used to trap hares _alive_ with my grandfather when I was a kid. The fastest land animal in Ireland - faster than a horse by far - so catching them alive isn't easy at all. You have to go about it in a certain way and, uh, it's highly illegal too which makes it - well - _slightly_ more difficult I suppose. Hares are a highly protected species in Ireland but the thing is ... the way you _must_ do it sort of ends up protecting you anyway because if the hare didn't see or hear you - which it can't, not even once because if it does it's gone and you'll never see it again - then it's highly unlikely anyone else did either. Today you'll sell a single hare for 250 euros - even though it's illegal there's no shortage of people who don't mind buying them. Now before I'm cursed, let me explain ... yes, it's mostly dog-owners that buy the hare and they do it to train their dogs with them. They let the hare go and then the dogs out after it but you have to remember ... the hare is by far the fastest land animal in the country and it can and _does_ outrun those dogs every time. They're paying for the privilege of releasing the animal back into the wild and giving their dogs a good workout into the bargain - that's the way to look at it. You should see, hear and _feel_ those little fuckers go - when they're belting past you only a couple of yards away the ground under you shakes with the thump of their feet. Catch them? lol ... only a human could do it - or a cheetah. If you wanna know how we do it let me know. It's a bit involved and I've spent enough time yammering on already.
