Similar scenario for me. On top of the bullying, I was shocked when my coworkers, people I would regularly helped out, whom I considered my friends, failed to support me. People are the worst.

@@carolmahoney2109 Carol spoke truth. People wake up and realize the truth before it's too late. Most people are cowards and will protect themselves at all costs. Don't mistake grabbing lunch daily w these people for genuine friendship. You work together and its convenient. When you leave they'll get a new lunch buddy. Sometimes you get lucky and find a "real one" but that's not common. It's a gift from God. My dad told me as a kid to be careful being the spokesperson for a group of disgruntled people at work, especially if you are speaking primarily from 2nd/3rd hand experience. Often when you get resistance from the complaint, the others will disperse into the shadows and leave you to fight the battle ... and likely lose your job in the process. Be smart but don't be a coward.

Shit I've seen this happen at my own workplace. Target was an elderly female coworker by a male supervisor and two other female employees. Supervisor was being a real ass making comments about her age leaving her so upset that she was forgetting how to do basic tasks. The three continued to slander her behind her back claiming she's showing signs of dementia and going crazy. A month later, she gave her two weeks notice and quit. And they still talk shit about her. It's disgusting.

I completely agree with you. There is indeed a special place in hell for those types of wicked people. They are sociopathic narcissists who takes pleasure in emotionally harming their bullying target and are able to psychologically manipulate others in the company to go against the innocent target. They always target the best of workers due to jealousy. Or just wanting to be malicious..I have recently went through a similar experience at my present job. It is only by the grace of God that I have been remaining strong and have patiently endured mistreatment and defamation for a number of years. I never experienced this in the previous jobs I had. My guess is that there are companies who have a bullying culture and others that have a more healthier work place.

This is me- I'm dealing with bulling at work. I've lived my entire life NEVER was I bullied- I defended those that were bullied. Now in my 50's I'm being bullied at work, for a few years now. - I can barely complete a sentence without having to search for words. My confidence & memory are SHOT! I am CRUSHED- That people can be so cruel! Then I'm mad at myself for being a weakling & putting faith into people because I do know how Cruel ppl can be! I have a substance abuse issue, I had 16 years sober- no more! I'd love to go to detox & rehab however if I leave work for any length of time- I will not have a job when I return. The money is more than I can earn anywhere else. My only recourse is God Almighty- that God sees this wrong & makes it RIGHT! Or I go to rehab on their dime & let them do what they will once I return??? I'm really confused. Thank you for this post, it is comforting knowing your not alone.

Fact is,if your line manager wants to get rid of you and does so by 'bullying' and generally making life unpleasant for you then there's not a lot you can do. Human Resources department will ALWAYS back up your line manager, no matter how badly he/she behaves. Generally what happens is that you get 'managed' out of the department (this happened to me TWICE) My manager was very clever-he used a colleague of mine as a 'battering ram' -the colleague made life for me very unpleasant and I could tell he was put up to doing this by my manager. I call it 'bullying by proxy'.Later on , the bullying by my line manager became more 'overt' The first time I went to complain to HR department their response was to turn the issue into a 'performance management issue' and I was put on a discipliniary just for having the temerity to complain. Workplace Bullying should be made a CRIME -it damages lives. I now work for MYSELF as I would never want anyone to have that kind of power or control over me ever again.....

make it easy : do a handwritten letter to your local police authority ... and explain everything ... don't waste time collecting evidences ... it's not your job . Local authority have the means and appropriate professionals to deal with it and start collecting proofs of evidence _____ IT MAY TAKE YEARS _______ . One week after you've sent the letter to the police station , send a registered copy to your aggressor --- the exactly one you'd sent to the police ----- .By that time ,,, experts might be already on the field trying to gather evidence without ANYONE notified it --- low profile ---- . After several years [ 4 in my case ] they have already enough evidence gathered very discreetly to present to the court . In the end : the ceramics factory went out of business , my agressores were socially empoverished , and 'committed' suicide [ defenestration ] 253 workers went on the streets jobless and without pay , l received a small $$$$ repairmente and went to another job . P.S : l took about 8 years minimum wage whilst performing small jobs .

It was a nightmare. I left the company before I had a nervous breakdown. I am being bullied at work. From the day I arrived in my office, my supervisor has done hostile things to me. She has had the ear of her supervisor and distorted information regarding what she's done. I filed and EEO complaint based on my PTSD, which she was aware of. She has exacerbated my stress response by doing sneaky things to me. For example, she refused a request for sick leave but she never informed me of that decision. She hid the refusal by requiring that I file for annual leave. When I discovered this and asked her, she said she didn't accept my medical note as it didn't conform to requirements, without spelling out how it did not conform, nor did she give me an opportunity to remediate the issue with the letter. She also denied me sick leave without explaining why she denied it. I ended up going up the chain of command and then filing an EEO complaint. I started tracking how the case affected me, and saw quite quickly that it was extremely upsetting and stressful and was badly disrupting my sleep. I felt like this woman was robbing me of my badly needed sick leave by reaching out from the office to bully me and deprive me of peace of mind. I have a stress disorder and this woman has stressed me out. I didn't realize she was bullying me until I started watching WBI podcasts. I am still on leave. At this point, I plan to change offices. However, this woman retired and was given another position doing the same job in the same office. In short, she was allowed to stay on despite the fact she bullies her staff. Despite her bullying, she was rewarded and her position is now more permanent so staff will perpetually be trapped by a boss who bullies. Pretty disgusting response by the organization in light of her abusive treatment of her staff.

On the first day of this one job I had. One of the guys I was supposed to be working with, called my female supervisor, ugly, manly and basically stupid to her face. My supervisor tried to defend herself and said a couple things back, but it wasn't anywhere close to the kind of mean things this male co worker was saying. I felt so uncomfortable witnessing this. So I kind of have heartedly laughed..And said " I just want to keep the peace. " After hearing this. My male coworkers said laughing at both are jokes?" Your going to have to pick a side. " I ended up quitting after three days. I had a bad feeling. That I just witnessed a small taste of how bad things could go. I'm sure that eventually I would've became a target for that kind of treatment.

I think the answer is to move jobs as soon as anything like this happens. It is a downward spiral. The best solution might be simply to say as you think that I no longer fit your company you will have no problem in me moving on and providing me with a reference. This would put the employer on the backfoot, because either the company would have to let a previously competent worker go or they would have to back pedal.

Jesus. Soon much of this tale rings true for me. Except the end of the story. I was VP Ops and the new CEO put me on a PIP after a month and moved me to a written warning 2 days later, and you could tell he was getting off on it. Shook me to my core as I received promotion after promotion up to this point. After I had a panic attack and took a day off work I was berated for not calling in sick (I was passed out on the floor). But then I fought back. Wrote to the board, told them exactly what was happening and said sort it as the next step is the shareholders and then the CEOs little house falls down. I have never seen a turnaround happen so quickly. I resigned but raised grievances, sent letters showing that this guy was off on one, and they offered to settle. That was in fact yesterday. Bottom line - don't listen to the "be gentle" advisors. If you can - fight fire with fire.

In my case managers got bonuses for saving money and one of the few ways to do that was to replace high performing sales people with new ones. Strip the sales accounts giving the top billers to non-commissioned reps. Give other large accounts to other salespeople but not pay extra commissions. Make them work harder for nothing. This manager was sinister. I sat in the office while this person gave horrible references to companies looking to hire their victims. More than once! I was there when HR came in and told them to stop. They agreed. Then 5 minutes later another reference call & they did it again! Didn’t want the competition. This very large company ended in bankruptcy. Their strategy for saving money is just part of what destroyed them.

OMG that is exactly what is happening to me. How did you know my story. The area I live in, the laws are so backwards that unwarranted performance management (or unwarranted PIPs) due to workplace bullying is not even recognized. No manager will ever believe that one of his/her own is a bully...oh no, NIMBY. Everyone assumes that any PIP is legit and assumes that you are incompetent without even having evidence of bad performance. All the bully has to say to senior management is "she's not performing" and there are no questions asked. The anger associated with being targeted by an incompetent bully who controls your every mood and then has unlimited powers to destroy you is one thing, but as you correctly describe the associated humiliation of having to defend your performance while all management sit there and look at you with disgrace is another thing. I too developed high blood pressure, and gastro problems...the bullying was so bad that blood was gushing out of my nose when the bully sat in front of me (GUSHING out!). The room constantly caved in and as I suffered from severe panic attacks all day and PTSD. I can't take it anymore, and am contemplating ending my life - there is no help where I live, and nobody cares...I just can't take one more day of it!

Like you said, Dr, Naime, Susan should spotted the problem right then and there, and put an end to Maude's evil plan. She should've documented Maude's behavior, and her attacks, and question any employee if she spread rumors about her, gathering support for her case, and bring it to the executives, and HR before Maude could exact her plans on her! The higher-ups, if they were smart would've gotten wise to Maude's plan, and handed her walking papers, therefor saving Susan from being railroaded out of her job. That's what would've happen instead of that sad story you told. This shouldn't have happened! Bullying doesn't belong in the workplace. Period.

@dg...-the thing to consider is Why they hired Maude in the 1st place. She went to their alma mater, their favorite college prof. Is her mentor, her father is their golf buddy, she's a member of their club. SUSAN is Non of that, not a part of their "class group". There is NOT 1 Single reason for them to consider her in their future plans. People dont consider "class" groups in America but they Are Certainly There. Personally, i prefer classism to racism because with early planning/training a few can make the transition but racism is heinous no matter what. Lastly, the comment about quickly noticing the bs & asking for a letter of recommendation and leaving quickly is probably best. For most of us hard-working nsibe people our "lives" were lost b4 we even knew we were targets. Take care

If you start to notice there is not many customers then management is probably on a lay off at any excuse. Best to start looking for a new job before the ship sinks. No one would fire you if you were really necessary and not expendable.

What has helped me overcome the same situation at work has been to bite the bullet, gulp down the shame and report each incident. Document everything and report them. Even when they paid no attention. Only because the day would come when they would ask me "why didn't you say so before"? Well, they day also came when I was empowered to say "I had enough and I let you know all along. It is all on the record. For 9 years. Guess who had a strong case in the end... Even if the bully's power was diminished in the end because her enabler left, I would have had no support if I had not kept everything documented and copied everybody up the chain

I've never heard this scenario so perfectly discribed before, thank you so much Gary. My only question is what can be done? And how can we deter this sort of behaviour? Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

Generality in feedback is never a feedback. It is meant to test your reaction. Ask them for specifics or ignore whatever said as incorrect. PIP never helps and it is method used to get employee out. This is only to create proof and formalities to avoid legal percussions if let go of employee just like that... Never take it personally. Never work hard due to pip. Let them have pip.. enjoy your 2-3 months. Life is too short to work for shady employer, if they had to use such tactics. I let go of job for my health and peace of mind.. nothing matters more than these. HR always protects manager , no matter how pathetic he is.. best is to move internally in different team or leave company.

I hate bullying. I am bullied everyday at my job, by my co-workers. They tell me what to do, and they blame me when a customer has stolen something. Some of my other co-workers stand around, and talk amongst themselves. They care more about friendships on the job, than completing tasks. I do the best that I can at work, but it's not good enough.

I see in the comments that people are saying that they don't know what to do about it and maybe, just maybe if people start talking more about it and that it happens and we all know it is happening that some of the bullies may not try it cause we are all on to it now. I guess voice it. Let people know that we know it happens. IDK.

Poor Susan. I wish people would just be fair. The supervisor had no right to act that way, and honestly, I was thinking about going into work in the field of HR. I would never tolerate bullying. The first thing management should do is inform supervisors that bullying will not be tolerated.

Hi Dr Gary, how are you? I love hearing your audio things on you tube, at my workplace, i think me and my work mates, we've been treated unfairly, i've been work at my workplace for 10 years, it s a Japanese vehicle warehouse that's very popular in Australia. Before that i was working in that company in manufacturing departments. First 5 years working of this warehouse i was mostly working in an area same few jobs every day, straight 5 years, no chance of training up skills, after 5 years, the company start to outsource their employees, most of supervisors took the packages. Before the seniors supervisors left the company with big good package, he already lifted his own favoured same back ground people to be our future supervisors on pm shift. These young blokes, some are very smart on computing and powerpoint presentations. But they wont last down AM shift by their management skills, they are way of incompetent to run the employees down day shift. So they team up with our managers to let them run people down PM shift, cos they know us down PM shift are mostly migrants with not much English and know about the work policies and HR policies. They came down, they moved all the people their current department to a different department with a reason business need. They have moved us to another department and let us know some jobs and do those jobs every day, straight to 5years time, all the people who sucked up to this young bloke, he lifted them up to supervisors, and the funny thing is all the promoted supervisors are same background, these guys are incompetent in running people at workplace too. They only listen to this young bloke to how abuse and bully the new employees just moved over this department. These supervisors only serve the company for afew years then got up supervisor level and start pushing us to work with high workloads, they just disappeared in their office talk and laught with their gangs and watching us working flat out. This young bloke some how got very big support from our lazy managers who delegated him the power to do what ever he likes down our pm shift. Now all my work mates' mentality now all scared, feared to raised their voices for being treated unfair, we not dare to complain because he got very big support from our current toxic managers. In mass meeting they alwaya raised him a good candicate to be in this position, he deserves it. HR people are also teamed up with managers, our pm union rep.teamed up with these managers, they gave him a relaxing job with a pay rise more than us. Instead raise the complaints or stop these managers running wrong things at workplace, this union rep.just silent his mouth and enjoying his relaxing job with good money. So now all of us need to do what to stop these guys bullying us at workplace Dr Gary? Please advise us

My boss called me in one day for a “chat” and she accused of me of going outside for a break without signing out. This was NOT true. I told her so. And she said that “… someone reported it to her…”. She wrote this allegation in my probation report as if it was a factual event that happened. What would you do in such a situation ?

How about 2 cowerkers with less experience, skills and less academic preparation than you. What if the were the bullies? What if they refuse to do tasks and are giving them to the most experienced one? And this happens boss, after boss, after boss for more than 10 years? Even through the experienced one alerted Human Resources Dept.

Our definitions of leadership need to change. If we didn't have this top-down authoritarian style that is more appropriate for the military than for the civilian workplace, we wouldn't have had Enron, WorldCom, Lehman Brothers, etc. Not to mention Donald Trump as president.
