If Pog gets more time then I think you're right, but I think Vingegaard will go on the attack, if he can, and if Pog can stay with him and jump him on the final climb again then I think he's got it in the bag. It only takes one stage for a rider to crack and lose a lot of time and whilst I don't expect this to happen to Pog we've seen it before and even seen him crack even whilst ahead in this race so we just don't know. In 1997 my family and I followed the tour around in a camper van. Regarding sports and France, it was an amazing experience. Regarding spending 3 weeks in a small space with people you don't necessarily mix with (slightly extended family), it was a... challenge. :D There was actually a picture in the local news papers of my mothers hand trying to hand water to Riis the day he cracked on alpe d'huez. Our experience with fans are that, by far, most people behave quite well. Not unlike concerts... most people behave well, but there's always a few knuckle heads. Now we had our great local French wine, in the evenings, after the stage, but we did notice eg. some fresh young boys from our own country, who had just jumped in any old car and driven there (we doubted they had more than 1 or 2 sets of clothes with), who started on the alcohol quite early. As far as we could see, even they mostly behaved, yelled louder than most, but behaved. On the other hand, we also saw eg. a French lady steal the free kids toys from the advertisement caravan out of the hands of Spanish fan... much to his consternation. And I will never understand why people keep stepping closer to the riders on mountain stages. If everybody stayed at the side of the road, everybody would be able to see. Human group nature I guess... but that's probably just a reflex by most people. But throwing things at people is just inexcusable.

Lesson to all of the GC teams, you should care for anyone.. When Adam Yates attacked, Visma and Soudal doesn't care. Few minutes later, Tadej attacked and bridges to Yates for recovery. We've already seen that glimpse before. Like for example 2022 Giro when Hindley attacks Carapaz for a few hundred meters and bridges to Kamna who was part of the breakaway and waited in the right moment. When Hindley finally on his teammates wheel, Kamna hammered it down and Carapaz cracked.

Not sure how accurate they are, but the folks that estimate power numbers show this as Tadej’s best climb ever and also very good numbers for Jonas (which matches Jonas saying he was very happy with his numbers). If that’s accurate, I think this means that with the stronger team and finally seeming to be a bit more smart tactically, unless he bonks, Tadej will extend his lead into Nice. Tomorrow will be a huge day given that it’s going to be a longer climb and hotter-which have typically been more suited Jonas. Can’t wait!

@DusanCeferin6 ай бұрын
@@jackspeed650 Chances are this is all smoke and mirrors just like the yesterday's stage VLAB radio message about how the pace set by UAE suits Jonas just fine. It seems in both cases that these bits of information are totally unnecessary, redundant and forced. Namely, had the the Jonas numbers really been that great, every/any smart tactitian would have kept them secret and confidently and patiently wait for the race to play out. By the same token, had the pace set by UAE really suited Jonas, you can be pretty sure they would have not announced it on the radio and that they would have just prayed that UAE keeps doing their thing. There are other bits of psychological warfare waged by VLAB sprinkled all over the information space (like Jonas' moderately upbeat post stage statements, lack of reliable information about Jonas' real health condition regarding the april crash and that totally ridiiculous tactics van idea), just to confuse evrybody and stop focusing on what really matters. All these bits make one think VLAB are forced to resort to these kinds of means because they lack what it takes to achieve their objective.

Why aren’t the organizers placing barriers on the steepest parts of the climbs, where throngs of fans generally act like a**holes, blocking the roadway, touching the riders and tossing stuff at them? It happens every single mountain stage.

Chris, what would be the Visma strategy? What would be the UAE estrategy to protect Pogacar?
@ChrisHornerCycling6 ай бұрын
Visma only real strategy would be to hope Jonas gets a tad better. Then anything could happen as we saw last year. There is small hope that Pogi’s legs fade after such a long time being at the top. Covid is around and could hit anyone. But visma do not have a two rider option in the race, so they cannot put any real pressure on UAE unless Jonas level goes up or Pogi’s goes down. But with only a 1:57 lead Pogi, certainly any change in fitness could make that happen very quickly still. 🤔🦋🔥👍
@ChrisHornerCycling6 ай бұрын
Round #2. Let’s see how the big climbs go and see if Jonas’ lighter weight helps him to bridge the gap in fitness to Pogi. The important thing for now is that Jonas always stays with Pogi and does not try to win the race tomorrow or on the next couple of mountain stages, unless Jonas feels the legs have improved greatly. So Visma strategy is to wait patiently and hope time helps Jonas improve. 👊🦋🤔
@mracer86 ай бұрын
I am not Chris and Visma don't have enough mountain goat to do damage to UAE unless I am mistaken! just keep Pogi safe and fuel and this thing is a done deal! I have yet to see Jonas make a attack in 14 days of racing so is hard to believe they can put the hurt in with the team they have left! maybe tomorrow Jonas can do a 197km solo breakaway and win by 8 min!! just like Floyd Landis did back in 2006 with that 120km ride! hahahha!!!

Thanks for calling out the Chips-Guy. Knucklehead for sure. What about Bengalos (red smoke) right on the track? Apart from riders risk of loss of orientation and crashing into spectators - with riders going all out up the mountain, they do not breath air, they drink it - pulling that crap deep into their lungs. Ticks me off no end. What do you think? Overreaction on my part?

Chris, i was waiting patiently here in the UK for your analysis of the stage because watching this i thought, like you, perfectly executed plan on the final climb by UAE, but there's still a nagging thought in the back of my head that says was this necessary, and we'll only know after tomorrow's stage if this was wise. Now it's perfectly possible that it was the best way to go and Pog either rides tempo tomorrow, or even does the same thing again, but surely he's burnt some matches today by doing this and he, and his super domestiques, may pay for this effort tomorrow? Great analysis as usual but i was hoping to hear some thoughts on what Visma could have done to try to combat this. Maybe there wasn't anything, as you say this Visma team ain't the same one as last year, maybe Jorgenson just doesn't have it in his legs, but i felt he needed to go all in to bring back Yates, even if it meant his team leader being left exposed later up the climb, but all Visma riders drop away so this happens anyway the moment the peace is increased. I have to say I've been very disappointed with Jorgenson. I know it's easy to criticise and he's young and maybe it's too much to expect for him to perform consistently day in day out in a 3 week race like the Tour, but after his form in the Dauphiné i expected more. I wonder if Pog (and UAE in general) lured Visma into a false sense of security by saying they didn't need to attack today, but unlike the stage a few days ago where Pog attacked on an earlier climb only to be brought back and ultimately beaten by Jonas he went on the final climb where i think he knew he wouldn't get into the same difficulties, there was just no time to be able to respond and once it flattened off towards the top Pog could time trial his way to the line taking even more time. Is there any way to combat this? Thinking a bit more if Jorgenson didn't have the legs couldn't Vingegaard have put in a burst before Pog attacked? Sure Pog gets on his wheel but it just looked far too easy for Adam Yates to sprint away and then for Pog to do the same minutes later.

The rider most dangerous to Pogacar on GC is Pogacar! Unless he starts NOW riding 'defensively' In terms of stop trying to put more time into the other 2 (bonus seconds at the finish apart) he increases his chances of sabotaging his own TDF win!, there is NO WAY he should lose 2 mins if he follows JV and RE wheels and allow them to absorb ALL the stress of trying to find a way to get that time back. He can repeat the tactic in todays stage of shooting AY or even JA (a bit more difficult given his position and sure to result in a reaction from at least CR/Ineos) off the front on the last climb and then leave it to the other teams to pull it back and sit on them (not bridging), let them do all the work and hopefully Yates stays away for another win for UAE or if brought back, Pogacar will be the fresher, save energy for that massive last week, possibly gain bonus seconds or at the very worst doesn't lose time. ALSO....They should Identify the idiot who threw Cheesy Wotsits into Pogacar's face and out him!! They don't belong anywhere near a bike race!
@nigelstead84246 ай бұрын
He leads by 1.57 atm I think. Pogi won his first TDF by overturning Roglic’s lead of 1.56 on the TT. His lead is not decisive and it would be risky for him to simply try and defend it with so far to go and a big TT at the end. Besides he is at his best when he tries to win races.
@mracer86 ай бұрын
Wow, how negative racing can you get! if you can't gain time but only ride so defensively even with the strongest team, the fastest rider in the mountain! maybe you shouldn't bother with racing!! nobody tell Pogi to go Kamikaze and do a 80km breakaway! but keeping the pace high and attack close to the finish shouldn't be a issue or risk as long as UAE keep a rider near by with pocket full of GEL and Drink for Pogi!! You can not go into the final tt stage with just a 1-2 min advantage where a bike issue or small mishaps will ruined your whole year of preparation!!

@@nigelstead8424Correct. He needs to enter the last stage with about 3 minutes on Jonas AND Remco (very important) so he can feel a winner. 2 minutes is not enough so I guess they will repeat the same tactics over and over-grind Visma on the climbs until only Jonas is left and then attack in the last km-try to put 15-20 seconds in him every mountain stage/ But we will see of course, this situation is still very unpredictable
