Giovanni being the Viridian City Gym Leader is still such a good twist. You could argue that Blue as Champion was something you could see coming - he was always one step ahead of you. But you could never expect that Team Rocket's boss was someone involved with the good guy Gym Leaders.

Of all the characters in Pokémon, Giovanni is hands-down my favorite. And he's not even a particularly complex character. He just wants money (and the power that comes with it, to a lesser extent). He leads a double life as Gym Leader and Rocket Boss; has a son, and abandoned him after being defeated in Kanto. That's about as far as Giovanni's character extends in the games. Definitely not the most fleshed out character in Pokémon. But I think that's what makes him so likable.

i just thought of something interesting... all those years ago in hg/ss everyone thought that noise that happened after Giovanni left was a splash and there was a theory Giovanni killed himself, but what if this is actually the Giovanni from Rainbow Rocket and that sound... was an ultrawormhole opening? maybe that isn't what it was intended to be back then, but our Giovanni from US/UM's timeline was still the one that got defeated by red (he says having a kid stand in front of and defeat him is nostalgic) and team rocket still disbanded in alola's universe, so.... what if, he disappeared for so long because he was in ultra space? He spent the time between the events of hg/ss and b2/w2 in ultra space and that's why after being defeated by gold he never returned to the radio tower (he was defeated by red at least 3 times and that never stopped him before) he trained in ultra space and learned all about the alternate worlds and timelines and when he returned in b2/w2 perhaps he had met all those other leaders from universes where they succeeded and saw what they could do (including a universe where ultra beasts had destroyed alola maybe) he was working in secret on the technology to gather all these other leaders from worlds where they succeeded as opposed to failing like he had and like all of them had in supposedly this world and timeline. He basically spent all those years that team rocket was just "Dead" world hopping and working on reviving team rocket but stronger and better. He wanted to capture the ultra beasts and maybe most of team rainbow rocket had been going on in secret for years he figured out how to use the ultraworm holes and only needed to figure out how to capture the ultra beasts. Idk may just be completely nonsense but it would explain a lot actually...

I don't think it was an Ultra Wormhole. Giovanni would need to have his Mewtwo on him, and he said "This should never happen. For some reason, it makes me feel nostalgic." If he had actually fought against Red in the past, he would have said that he felt nostalgic, and left it at that. This also is disproved by him having Mewtwo, a pokemon he would've either had to have create, or he captured at the city it hid in. What else is further against this is the Mega Evolution Giovanni uses. Notice how all the other universes' villains don't use Mega Evo, nor Primal Reversion; Giovanni is the obvious odd-duck in this flock. If he was defeated by Red, he wouldn't have Mewtwo. If he also was from R/B, he wouldn't have access to Mega Evolution. Let's also not forget how he would need to be from the timeline X/Y was connected to (Seeing how the difference between the two timelines is that, for example, a Frontier Brain was transported from Hoenn [Not!X/Y] to Alola [X/y due to Mega Evolution]) in order to even use it or have access to it.

Dusk Myerva that makes sense too, it was just a theory i believe though that they proved the canon to be that the fire red/leaf green remakes supposedly happened in the same time line as the or/as remakes (even though they didn't have mega evolutions) as for the mewtwo perhaps he could have caught it in ultraspace? I don't really have any other defenses there except that he is a giovanni from another universe much like the other bosses where he either didn't lose to gold, or to red or gold. Either way. If sun and moon has crossed cannons with ths anime at all (it feels like it has a tad bit) it could also just be the fact that team rocket created mewtwo it could just be a universe like in ths anime where giovanni had a mewtwo in a robot suit in his gym XD i just like to think the wormhole thing is maybe a possibillity in some way, it does make sense we have no proof this giovanni has mewtwo though and we have no confirmation he's the fr/lg giovanni in hg/ss and no confirmation any of the other remakes fall into that timeline it's all a tossup i suppose :)

TBH, After I play Fire Red before, I didn't run Bug-types just like your Scyther because Bug-type movepool in Gen 3 is nonexistent. (Scyther is causing me butt pains. It's hard to catch. My theory why Giovanni doesn't have a Rhyhorn in some future games is that in red and blue when you fainted it, he probably revived it and sent out it's 2nd evolution Rhydon. Like in the old anime (season 1) where ashes pokemon could evolve in battle which I assume that happened Yes ik this theory is stupid but eh and in the gen 4 games even after that this can explain why he evolved Rhydon into Rhyperior

It's such a huge shame that when it comes to Nintendo's wide array of beloved villains, Giovanni isn't mentioned all that much. Granted, it somewhat makes sense, since Pokémon as a series doesn't necessarily have an overarching villain like Zelda or StarFox (Ganon/Ganondorf and Andross respectively), but if 1 could be nominated I believe Gio would be the best fit. Even when Ghetsis, the literal evil cult leader, calls Giovanni pure evil then you know he's fucked up in the noggin. Sure he isn't the most complex, not like N or Volo, but simplicity doesn't equate to mediocrity. He's evil, simple as that, and sometimes that's all you need in a villain. Plus he REALLY is evil. Dude got his henchmen to kill a mother marowak in front of the baby. That's not just cruelty, that's pure evil no doubt about it in the slightest. And for Rainbow Giovanni in particular, he wants to rule any and all worlds he can think of, and forcibly captured Mewtwo, who just wants to be left alone. Maybe he's not revolutionary, but I think he should be celebrated as a villain with K Rool, Ridley and the like!

And that's all without mentioning how he might even had a hand in the creation of Mewtwo (which was originally said in the Cinnabar journals to have been painful), using his influence to smuggle and kill under wraps, somehow becoming a Gym Leader which is no easy feat, and somehow being able to dodge every other gym leader, police authorities and elite four. Guy's a genius, and he knows how to use anyone or anything to get what he wants. Cept Red of course.
