purple demon I work at a farm supply store in the midwest and on occasion I have to service native english speakers who I cannot understand a goddamn word out of. Despite being in Mid-Missouri, I've also seen men with thick chinese and russian accents whom I've had better luck understanding (okay I didn't really understand what the Chinese guy was SAYING but I still understood what he meant pretty quickly because he was right in front of me, not over some phone line). More than once I've interacted with this one man who I swear to god has a stereotypical Canadian accent; as well as looking like a stereotypical Canadian being tall with dark scruffy hair, a short jawline beard, and usually wearing a flannel shirt. (all he was missing was an axe, a stocking cap, a bottle of syrup, and a habit of saying "Eh?" at the end of every other sentence I'm serious here) When I was putting his address into the computer I thought "Soovin" was the street name, but I've since come to learn that's just how he says "Seven". When I asked him about it, he said he and his family are from Germany! *throws up hands to signify giving up*

The “Kou” in Raikou is pronounced “Koh” because it has to do with Japanese pronunciation. The “u” extends the “o” sound in Japanese when put next to each other (こう). Raikou retains its Japanese name in English and that’s why it’s pronounced “Rai-KOH.” Hope that clarifies and helps :))

Someone probably mentioned this already, but Raikou is pronounced Rai-Co because it's a Japanese name (and well, pokemon is Japanese) A is ALWAYS pronounced like "Ah" in Japanese. I is ALWAYS pronounced like "ee" in Japanese, thus where the "I" sound comes from, Ah-ee sounds like I, so.. Rah + ee = Rai. Okay, now kou, O is ALWAYS pronounced like "oh" in Japanese, and u is usually silent and typically just elongates the "oh" sound, since u always makes an "oo" sound, oh-oo is.. Very hard to say, try it yourself, you kind of have to pause between oh and oo, and then the R is technically pronounced wrong, since Japanese has weird "R"s, but you can look that up for yourself.
@bluevoker64558 жыл бұрын

Yeah that´s the right explanation for the name, I´m german so it´s a lot easier to know where the pronunciations come from, because german pronunciation works almost the same way you mentioned with the japanese ones :D So for example "Mean-shao" is very obvious for a german speaker, because you would pronounce "Mien" like "Mean" because in german "ie" is just a long english "e".

Arceus is a portmanteau of two Latin words. Those words being "Archetypus" meaning origin, and "Deus" meaning God (make sense right? Since it is the progenitor of all Pokemon, and it's the God of the Pokemon universe). The arch part of "Archetypus" is pronounced like ark. And "Deus" is pronounced Day-us.This makes the ONLY correct pronunciation of the word AR-KAY-US. Getit? Gotit? Good!

Well seeing as the anime has real world accents, I the pronounciations should be too. Like the English word lieutenant which is pronounced ''left-tenant'' in European English. In which case Mantine would be Man-Tine in England and its former colonies and commonwealths, and Man-Teen in America and Canada. The non English speaking nations, those which keep the American Pokémon names, would then use the pronounciation according to which form of English is taught at school. Here in Denmark we're taught proper English, hence the correct pronounciation for me would be Man-Tine.
@HerrMisterTheo7 жыл бұрын
It has little to do with accents and more to do with what the name derives from. It's MANTa ( as in "manta ray") and marINE (as in "marine life"). Nobody would pronounce "marine" in a way that would rhyme with "mine", so that's why "Mantine" should more or less rhyme with "marine".
@beta511ee46 жыл бұрын
HerrMisterTheo A possible origin for Mantine's name is also "brine". Another possible origin is "Tyne", as in the River Tyne in England. Both are pronounced with a long i sound.

While this is really old and all in good fun, so there is know reason to critique, a majority of these names have reasonable pronunciations when you understand their origins. Mantine is a combination of Manta and Marine, so of course it would be pronounced that way. You also seem to struggle with the difference between pronunciation and inflection. Some of the names, like Unown, you were pronouncing correctly, but the 3D Pokedex app just had different inflection. He even changes his inflection for other Unown forms and "pronounces" it the way you do. I'm sure they were just glossed over for the sake of comedy so it's justified. I just don't want people to think that the pronunciations make no sense. (And I know you corrected this in your second video)

I think the app voice is computer generated so that's why it didn't pronounce some of the names correctly they should have just hired someone to say all the pokemon's names but then they would have to be paid to pronounce over 700 different words.

I believe that many of the pokemon names pronunciation is based of the origin of the name Mantine is a combination of manta, marine and brine
@TornadoCreator8 жыл бұрын
Most of these pronunciations you can get by knowing the foundations of the language. For example Raikou is unchanged from Japanese, where each syllable has a set sound and spelling in "romaji", a way or writing Japanese using western alphabets. So 'raikou' is actually the Japanese word. ra-i-ko-u. or らいこう。There's an indication in most names, usually based on Japanese, French, Latin or Greek roots. I'm pretty confident I pronounce the name correctly. I'd also be willing to outright call bullshit on their pronunciation of 'Tropius', but it's not worth going into detail. Interesting video all the same though.

Actually, meantime makes more sense since its baby form is mantyke, which is an alternate word for child, so man-teen makes sense, as it evolves from child to teen. Maybe, they will have a manadolescent or something, but that's be stupid.

It’s funny how arceus has ce in it which ce makes a s instead of a k or normal c sound, instead arceus just completely ignores that rule and just makes a k or normal c sound anyways.

I believe that before the Sinnoh anime the Pokémon anime was dubbed by 4kids but the Pokémon company heard the mispronounced names and started to dub it themselves. They changed some names over time either because they didn't sound right or because it sounded like something else. Such as Arceus. It's name was pronounced Ar-see-us until the Pokémon company changed it due to what it sounded like. I can't remember where they call it this but it sounds like a certain places word for BUTT.

This video has came on my recommended again after 6 years
I have explanations for 2 of these. Arceus used to be pronounced ar-sey-us, based on the Latin pronunciation of "deus", but they renamed it because it sounded too much like English slang far "arse" as the series became more popular in the west. Raikou is one of the pokemon that is spelled and pronounced exactly as in Japanese, and in Japanese, the characters that make up ra-i-ko-u always are read as "ry-ko".

Rai comes from the Japanese Raikiri so it's obvious why it isn't pronounced as ray. And you can only make a ko こ kana longer (in Japanese) by adding the u う kana. TMYK Source: Uni

It doesn't come from raikiri like what????? I'm pretty sure that means lightning BLADE it just comes from RAI itself (lightning) which is why RAIkou is electric
