Pokémon's New Academy is Pretty Good

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet feature a Pokémon Academy. The classes generally have good information, and I believe that Pokémon games going further should continue to explicitly teach game mechanics somewhere in the game.

8:58 one reason games sometimes just say "may cause" or "increased chance" is that when you give an explicit number, players are likely to see themselves as getting unlucky when the RNG is fair. Some games where it's particularly big deal even give false numbers to the player to deal with this effect.

This was a great video! I haven't personally played scarlet and violet, but I agree with your points. It truly is a shame when people try to gatekeep others just to justify themselves. I hope that the community can improve in the future.

🤓☝️: ACTUALLY *slobbers and stutters while pushes up glasses* Poison type literally exists and this idea is unrealistic. If they want a Pokemon that is stinky...then it would be more logical to give it the Stench Ability than make a whole new type. Yeah, I liked the school too. Sure it had its useless lessons, but Thyme’s were where I actually learned stuff and it’s because numbers were involved There are a ton of things I learned late and half of them were from me not reading the entire type chart so I had perceptions based on misunderstandings. Like how I didn’t know what Rock and Ground’s individual weaknesses were because all Gen 1 Rock Types were also Ground types so I was struck by discoveries like “Rock doesn’t resist itself?” “Rock isn’t weak to Ice?” Also the sheer number of Normal/Flying types accidentally trained me to avoid using ghost moves on ANY Flying type, even now when I know better. I didn’t understand IVs and EVs until I was an adult, I think I watched a Wolfe video like 4 or 5 years ago that made sense of it followed by my going to Bulbapedia and finding the “EV Yield” page. I remember friends trying to explain it to me when I was in, like, middle school (between the end of Gen 3 and the start of 4) and I just didn’t get it, all I knew was that the concept annoyed me because it wasn’t something I could see in the game.

Honestly, I was pretty confident I knew the right answer to the crit ratio and multiplier, but it completely passed me that it was changed in gen 7. It's always useful to have a comprehensive resource in game that addressed these things, but doubly so for Pokemon because the generational legacy is a hallmark feature of the franchise.

This academy is the best one, but we are talking about a triple A modern game The reason why academies were so limited back then is because devs had to work with actual limits. Those academies were good for what they could realistically do, and we also have to consider that these are not core parts of the game In SV, the reason why the academies are not better is basically because devs didnt want to. Its actually mediocre. I would get it if the academy wasnt a core part of the game, but school is one of the core parts of the game, they dont even let you wear anything but your uniform. The fact that one of the main buildings of the game isnt even a building, just a manu, is actually bad Comparing this academy to the ones before is kinda unfair for the earlier ones cuz they serve different purposes in different eras of game developing

Great reminder all adult players need to hear. Kids (and new players who are not kids) can't just magically know everything about a new subject. Be nice! You were new at this once, too! Instead of getting angry with them for not knowing what you know, help them learn!
