Ok so the gift horse mouth thing: you can usually tell how healthy a horse is by looking at its teeth. It doesnt tell you everything, but its a good litmus test. So "looking a gift horse in the mouth" is taking a gift and saying "well i dont know if this is good enpugh for me". The saying comes from ye olden days when giving horses as gifts was a thing people often did.
