Not that this will change how ridiculous a lot of sizes are, but sometimes it's important to recognize what measurement is probably being listed. For instance, winged Pokémon sometimes have a measurement that lists their wingspan, like how a bald eagle in real life often has a wingspan of about 6 feet (1.82 m), even though its body from head to toe is is about 3 feet (about 91 cm). Or for spherical Pokémon, it never really says if it's measuring the diameter or the circumference. I would assume it's the diameter, but still. And with Gastly, if the Pokédex is measuring its cloud as part of Gastly's body, then that would mean that its... head(?) isn't so monstrously huge. Still a lot of weird stuff in the Pokédex, though.

One of my favorite pokemon is Absol, so I looked him up on the pokedex, and he is apparently 3'11'' in height, and 103.6 lbs. I measured it out to see what it would look like in real life, and I was only mildly shocked. It appeared somewhat smaller than what I expected, but accurate overall.

Houndoom is 4' 7" (1.40 m). If that's in height, then it's twice as big as a Doberman and a lot bigger than a Great Dane Crobat is 5' 11" (1.80 m), and that's only a half inch smaller than me and about twice as big as an eagle. I would have been terrified if I saw it in real life Volcarona is 5' 3" (1.60), which is also terrifying even though it's meant to be a giant moth Drapion is 4' 3" (1.30 m), but just like Bulbapedia mentions, it seems to be twice as big in the anime

You know what I find most annoying with the sizes? THEY NEVER TRANSLATE THEM INTO METRIC IN THE ENGLISH GAMES RELEASED IN NON-ENGLISH SPEAKING COUNTRIES D: The games are never translated into "minor" languages, like my swedish for example, so they never even bother to translate the sizes. Thats why I really wish the image-system used in the older games will return one day.

Noctowl is an owl, obviously. Owls can get fairly large as birds but you would imagine it'd still be relatively small. At 5'3", Noctowl is the same height as me. Can't complain. It's a big floofy owl and now I know it's at a nice huggable size.

the sizes are AVERAGE size and weight meaning they can vary wildly, life forms are ALWAYS varied in size, and habitat and diet boath have an influence on size. dunsparce most likely grow like catfish so a dunsparce with a modest diet and kept inside would be drastically smaller.

I think I can answer your question as to why Dragonite is shorter than Dragonair. You see, there is this theory that GameFreak messed up the evolutions between Gyrados and Dragonite. It is thought that Magikarp was supposed to evolve into Dragonite, due to the same color scheme. Also, there is an old Japanese folk tale about a carp trying to get on the top of a mountain. With lots of struggle, it finally makes it and turns into a dragon. Thus, that's why Magikarp was thought to evolve into Dragonite. Also, Dratini and Dragonair have the same color scheme as Gyrados. They also have similar body shape, and Gyrados is longer than Dragonair. So it would make sense if GameFreak DID happen to mess up the evolutions. We may never know, though.

true, but it was a Chinese legend that magikarp was based on. gyarados was obviously inspired by Chinese dragons while dragonite was based on western dragons. plus I think I read that gyarados was meant to be a water dragon type which meant it would only be weak to dragon, but since gen one had no real dragon type moves to counter it as dragon rage was a set damage move, they had to change its type for balancing purposes

No. That legend is a Chinese one and Gyrados was designed after Chinese dragons. They even put carp features in them like the whiskers and fins. I think they did dragonite the way they did because they wanted to have a classical flying dragon as their ultimate Pokémon.

I like how Legends Arceus, as well as Scarlet, and Violet solve this issue by giving all pokemon a variation in size. Clarifying that the official size is just the average.

I think the height/weight in the Pokedex is for domestic pokemon bred and raised for the purpose of Pokemon batting, not wild pokemon. In the anime all the Charizard in the Charizard valley were wild Charizard, which is why they were all so much bigger and stronger than Ash's Charizard, who was always intended to go to a trainer

Eevee(my fav pokemon of all time) Is 1' tall.....but in the anime, it was like the size of a domestic cat, which on average is like 9-10 inches in height. So, in this case its not too far off I think.
