Its ok to mess with gender stereotypes and I actually like the way it is for the most part, but it is a little odd to base a pokemon design off of historical things in time that have been only known to be associated with one gender. If you are going to make a pokemon after a well know and old magical creature thats only known to be female and then make its 80% male, why use that design at all? I understand creative freedom but some might find it a little disrespectful to the myths and things used.

The Gothitelle line having a chance of being male isn't all that unreasonable when you know a little more about the Lolita subculture. One of the biggest figures in Lolita is Mana-sama, who's credited with popularising the fashion and owns a very prominent and beloved brand in the Lolita community despite being male. Also, the writer of one of the most loved stories within the Lolita community, Kamikaze Girls, is a man. It's also noteworthy that there's actually a considerable amount of men that take active parts in the Lolita community despite it being a very feminine style. So really it makes sense that there's a 25% chance that the Gothitelle line can be male, at least to those of us in the subculture.

I remember looking through so much fanart of Eevee and it's Eeveelutions and seeing so many Eevee's presented as Female I was genuinely taken aback to learn how rare a Female Eevee actually was. I had always considered the Eevee line to be more feminine overall. You could say Jolteon and Umbreon may look more masculine, but I wouldn't have been surprised if they turned out female either.

+Sham Wow Guy Chalk it up to Gameplay and Story Segregation. The designers don't want you having access to multiple starters or Eevees, and since people are unlikely to trade you their ones they have to discourage early breeding of them. Since they don't want to make them ALL male (since that would make no sense and would also limit them since they wouldn't be able to learn egg moves) they compromise and make males rare. A casual player is therefore unlikely to get a female one. A dedicated player could soft-reset until they get one, but it's really not worth the effort. It's all moot once you get access to Ditto, but by then it's generally the lategame and the advantage you'd get from another starter/Eeveelution is rendered useless by the amount of grinding you'd have to do to get it leveled up. Apologies for the text wall. I just find these kind of design decisions really interesting. :)

David Ward One of my favourite things about Gen 2 is the fact they give you access to Ditto on the same route that the Daycare is on. A few steps on from that route is Goldenrod, where you can get an Eevee. I remember Completing Crystal with a full team of Eeveelutions plus an overleveled Eevee that had been in the daycare for way too long. Fun times!

EonLowyvern Huh. I didn't know that (I'm not a fan of the Johto games I'm afraid0. There are some interesting design choices on the routes where you can catch Ditto though. First, you don't actually have to walk through ANY grass. That's pretty rare for a route. And as a result, casual players could go right through those areas without encountering a single Pokemon. Second is that Ditto has a 5% encounter rate, making it pretty rare to find. And finally, first-time players would have no idea that Ditto was there, since the only trainers that have DIttos are in Kanto (at least for HGSS. I couldn't find data for GSC). So to summarize. Ditto is a Pokemon with a tiny encounter rate, in an area where they don't have to encounter anything, and they wouldn't know it was there. Chances are pretty high that players wouldn't find it on their first playthrough, particularly since the internet was still young at that point. However, it is interesting that they did make it an option for players who knew what they were doing. That suggests to me that it's sort of a 'reward' for beating the game, in that when you replay it you know about things like that to make it more interesting. I'm actually replaying HGSS now (despite my qualms with it) so thanks for telling me about it! That'll make it more interesting :)
