I’d argue that Rivals truly became bad in generations 5 onward. Wally and Barry had nice dispositions but their battles were still difficult and their AI wasn’t completely braindead. It wasn’t as satisfying as beating a jerkass into the ground but the fights were fun.

Personally, I really liked the approach Black and White took with their rivals. I thought the balance between Cheren's likeness to Wally or Barry and Bianca's more naive and laid-back approach was really neat. The fact that they also reflected the main themes of truth and ideals was an amazing touch as well. On top of that, N is arguably the most developed rival in all of Pokemon's history, clearly trying to do good, allowing the the same assurance as with the more friendly rivals, yet still doing something completely in the wrong, allowing you to feel as badass as you do for beating up the earlier dickbag rivals in Gens 1 and 2.

I know the comment was meant as a joke, but honestly... Since the Pokeball itself was a new thing in Gen 1 (since the game itself was new), it actually WAS a clever idea to have a Pokemon mimic the object used to catch them. It was an interesting idea. It could have been improved upon if they had made Voltorb look a little more like a Pokeball, but it is the lazy color flip on Electrode where they sort of dropped the ball. They could have made Electrode look like a different ball (as has been suggested in many videos). I just can't agree that Voltorb was "uninspired". I think the concept was actually fun and interesting.

Lol, too true. Although is it bad if I was kinda happy to see another jerk rival? XD I miss the days of hating Gary Oak's guts (or technically his name is Blue I guess but he looks like Gary Oak) and wanting to smash his face in, and the satisfaction that came with defeating him! I'm not saying there shouldn't be any "nice" rivals in future games, but I would like a brief return to having a rival that I can genuinely get mad at. With the newer rivals there is no drive, no passion. I feel no motivation to beat them in battle, they are just nuisances that get in my way and act annoyingly cheerful and nice. At least with the Gen 1 rivals you had reason to want to defeat them, because they would mock you and make you want to prove yourself to them.

the fairy-type isn't based on tinkerbell. the fairy-type is based on eastern fairies. also, if smaug were a pokémon, smaug would be able to learn poison-type moves like smog (though tinkerbell would still be immune due to being steel-type) and fire-type moves like flamethrower (to which tinkerbell would be weak for the same reason)
