What I’ve learned is to just collect items I feel nostalgia from, whether or not there’s hype around it or not. It gives me greater incentive to keep sealed since it holds memories as is, and without the hype I don’t feel the need to sell.

Awesome tips!! You should do a video on the riskiest investments that people are going for i.e. buyouts of modern, grading everything, risky flipping strategies, pack opening channels etc. as a way to inform newcomers of potential pitfalls and dangers to not get sucked into.

I’ve been stocking up on sealed product lately. When my charizards come back from PSA I’m going to have a hard time letting go, I my them go up to crazy inflated prices was tempting, but they have corrected a bit. I sent off 8 zards from different sets and languages. Also have a corocoro jumbo zard at PSA now. Since I live in the area where WOTC originated and a lot of my friend’s parents worked there, it has always been a big deal since the beginning
@pokemon_classics3 жыл бұрын
I also have the Charizards at PSA. With the correction, it's definitely less tempting to sell them now; however, I base my sale decisions based on what I can buy, comparatively speaking. If there's an opportunity to buy something that I need for my personal collection or something that I feel is more rare/valuable I might sell some.
@AndrewJaws3 жыл бұрын
@@pokemon_classics when PSA 7 shadowless zards were hitting near 5k, I would have sold in a heart beat. My mistake was sending the 28 cards through the value service and then later bumping them up to express. I’m two months in waiting for them to enter the grading system. My personal goals aren’t to collect graded cards, my memories are from getting the cards as a kid and hanging onto them for near 20 years in the binder. I remember a few that I got from packs but I don’t remember where I got the shadowless one. All I knew was that it was the crown jewel and I knew charizard would be the one that would hold the most value.

Personally, I don't see either reaching 10K. I think they will both grow in value in the future, but 10K is about 1000% of the current value and the population report on 9's is pretty high.

Great video! People are still waiting for their psa and cgc graded cards to come back. Should collectors invest now or wait for all the graded cards to flood eBay and other sites? Collectors are paying a lot for graded modern Charizards. When all the hundreds of cards come back from grading, they’re going to be easier to get and I think the value will drop for the short term.
@pokemon_classics3 жыл бұрын
I agree with your assessment. I think there will be cards that continue to rise in price, but they will be the low-population vintage cards that aren't really available in raw, mint condition. Most modern cards and other easier to find cards will likely experience further saturation in the next few months as PSA catches up.

@@pokemon_classics He's definitely returned to form this season. I can't say I expected it. He's always played at a high level but it hasn't been this way since 2014. I'm enjoying it! As far as the Bills I'm so happy for that organization. They've been through so many ups and downs over the past two decades that it's just nice to see them establish themselves in a bigger way this year. Josh Allen definitely needed Stephon Diggs to say the least. Although I would rather have us play the Bills IF we got back to the SuperBowl, there is no denying that Kansas City is terrifying lol I look forward to seeing it play out.

I think sealed product is an interesting case study because as the supply of sealed product decreases the supply of the mint cards in the set increases. Meaning the expected value inside the box may decrease in the short term with so many openings at the moment when the inevitable flood of PSA cards comes back.
@pokemon_classics3 жыл бұрын
That's a good point; however, the overwhelming majority of pack-fresh cards are PSA 8 and PSA 9 quality. It's unlikely that the population reports for 10's (in most situations), will see the same type of saturation.

I recently purchased 3 southern islands boxes, with the intention of opening them and going for a chance at some of the low population cards. Would you say southern islands would be a good long term hold option? would you leave it sealed?
@pokemon_classics3 жыл бұрын
Personally, I would leave them sealed. The probability of grading 10's on the low pop cards is extremely low, so it's a gamble. If you did happen to hit a few 10's, they would be worth more than the sealed product alone, but for that same reason, I see the sealed boxes gradually increasing in value as collectors are willing to gamble.

that 1st editiion base box price is completely legit because back in year 2012, paying 400 dollars for a Unlimited box was unheard of and you probably got laughed at. Landscape was totally f'ing different back then.

What are your thoughts on blister packs? I have been collecting them vs buy loose packs since they are not as easily weighed. I know they are not to level of booster box but are more affordable.
@pokemon_classics3 жыл бұрын
You talk the words right out of my mouth. Not only are blisters better as presentation pieces, but they are much more appealing to those who actually plan to open the packs, since they aren't as easily weighed. I'd say your strategy is a good one, with a great outlook for long-term appreciation.
@ownbey583 жыл бұрын
@@pokemon_classics thanks! Within that what are your thoughts on a more modern set like flash fire with all Charizards? I know it is not WOTC but seems like a solid investment
@dougm27383 жыл бұрын
Appreciate your overview. Have you ever thought about looking at the time it takes for an item to double in value. For instance I think the 1st Edition Base Set Booster Box doubles in value about every 18 months.
@pokemon_classics3 жыл бұрын
The problem is the growth hasn't been linear. It's more exponential, which makes sense, since most collectors are between 25-35 years old and have just started building financial stability. This is also why I think some of these items will continue to grow. As those in the market age and become more financially stable, they will have more discretionary income to spend. Generally, nostalgic spending peaks in one's 40's.

@pokemon_classics3 жыл бұрын
Which Feraligatr, 4 or 5?
@OTHERVERSETCG3 жыл бұрын
@@pokemon_classics Good question! 4, the one with the closed mouth. I just started collecting last month after sorting through my childhood collection which was under my bed. Nothing great best things were like birthday pikachu and 1st fossil holo dragonite, but after buying a few psa cards this past month for the first time ranging from 5-10, I think the dragonite is at best a 6, so probably better to just sell in a vintage binder raw (I started selling off my bulk + a few holos on ebay in vintage binders for a few hundred). I've spent $4000 this past month on random stuff starting with useless holos like unlimited blastoise and crap, then buying psa cards and sealed product (nothing special shiny star v, kanazawa collection box, some other stuff - pretty much anything twicebakedjake buys I buy lol). I know this is a lot of random stuff. I'm guessing with the downtrend coming my $4k spent could become $2-3k, but hoping if I got stuff at a good deal that it shouldn't depreciate much. I tried buying things for 30-40% off if I could, but not really sure how I did because for all I know that feraligatr could be worth $100
@pokemon_classics3 жыл бұрын
@@OTHERVERSETCG In the short-term, Feraligatr is likely to settle between $400 and 500. I wouldn't expect much appreciation on it for at last a year or two. It might even drop a little; however, I don't think too badly on it. The Bellossom should be more stable and has more growth potential as a PSA10.
@OTHERVERSETCG3 жыл бұрын
@@pokemon_classics Yeah that's what I figured. I stopped buying anything below a 10, which does limit what I can buy. I got a 1st dark golbat for $330. I'll hold onto the bellossom and see if I can sell the feraligatr back on ebay for like $600 right now. I have some other psa cards that arent 10 either and will see if I can get rid of those too. So pretty much my entire collection should consist of psa 10 slabs or raw psa cards or sealed product?

Idk man. Buying vintage right now is sketchy. If the Pokémon craze dies off and you bought vintage at peak value...you’re kinda boned. It’d prolly take yeeaaars of growth to break even if the market drops to last years prices. Granted it wouldn’t happen overnight but if someones going to spend that much Money I assume they’d wait to buy until the market fully crashes, once the crash starts. All of this assumes an impending market crash but isn’t that the case with all investments
@pokemon_classics3 жыл бұрын
Historically speaking, the items I've mentioned have consistently grown for 10+ years. They may dip temporarily with consumer confidence, but unlike the majority cards that will see a more drastic and lingering dip, the items I've mentioned are likely to continue growing. Even amidst the current downturn, 1st Edition PSA 10 Chairzard just went up another $50,000 in price.

@@OTHERVERSETCG I keep a spreadsheet of my personal collection (mainly PSA sets), but a lot of the extras I've put into storage and hadn't bothered to track/sell until recently. A lot of cards just weren't worth the time/effort to dig out of storage, take photos, write descriptions, and post listings as PSA 9's or lower. Even 1st Edition PSA 9 holos (other than Base Set), might only sell for $50 just a couple years ago. I've been more active this year though. Plus, I have my PSA submission records that I can reference.
@OTHERVERSETCG3 жыл бұрын
@@pokemon_classics Oh wow you must have a truck load of stuff then. So really only until this year could you make any money out of pokemon cards you are saying. and even psa 9 1sts are a big deal. so pretty much I should only be buying psa 10 sts, but not yet because you are saying the market is way to expensive and will most likely retrace for at least the next 6-24 months.
@pokemon_classics3 жыл бұрын
@@OTHERVERSETCG Well, money could always be made back then (rather easily), just on a much smaller scale, unless you were grading 10's, which is mainly what I collected for myself and sold the extras. Then I would use the extra money to buy more collections. My focus was always on my collection (getting the 10's I still needed), not making money. For example, if I bought a raw card, and it graded a PSA 9, I could sell it and maybe double my money ($20 profit), but it wasn't really worth my time to do that on a large scale. I certainly did sell a number of cards, but only when it was convenient for me. I didn't even bother grading most 1st Edition WOTC holos that didn't have a good shot at a PSA10 due to centering or a factory print line. These cards were definite 9's, so they went into storage. In short, I think most 9's are still due for more correction, while most 10's will hold their value due to fewer copies available and few ungraded 10's left in circulation. With 9's suddenly becoming very profitable, there are a lot of collectors out there (sending in bulk orders to PSA). I've sent in a couple hundred 1st Edition WOTC holos myself this year.
