Before the series of the Orange Islands Arc has end with the return of Brock joining Ash and Misty again for the start of the Johto Journey Arc, we haven't learn from Brock of why he decided to leave Professor Ivy's lab and returned to Pallet Town. I mean it doesn't make sense in the first place and I wished the Japenese Writers have made an effort to reveal to the viewers of the real reason why Brock decided to Professor Ivy's lab.

it’s so weird to me that brock (and misty) are just normal gym leaders with literally no real significance besides being the first gym leaders. you replace them in the anime with any 2 leaders and they are some of the biggest characters in pokemon

You forgot to mention that after the Black and White (Best wishes) saga, where Brock met Cilan in the Johto region; Cilan’s Pansage gets poisoned thus Brock helps out when Pansage arrives in the Pokémon Center.
