Pokemon Horizons “Elite Four” Are A Bit Different…

(The later part of the comment contains spoilers for Pokemon Horizons Episode 56 for those who haven't seen it yet) Personally, I liked how Horizons handled the Elite Four, by having them take on the students in friendly battles it allows the students to use and show what they've learned during the Terastal Course so far. And I also love how besides giving them friendly battles, the Elite Four help the students learn and grow by giving advice to them, in this case Poppy pointing out that Dot overthinks too much in battle and that she should enjoy herself, and Liko finally finding her drive to be able to give it her all in battle. And I really hate how some people say that Liko is crying is because she's a "sore loser", Liko’s entire character arc and personal conflict has been about how she struggles to understand her Pokémon’s feelings. When Floragato was a Sprigatito she showed early on in the series that she loved battling. And while Liko has a natural talent for battling she never had a competitive personality. The episode where Liko gets called out by Kabu for letting Roy win the Litwick gym test and not finishing the battle against the gym trainer is the clearest example of her not taking battling seriously. There’s so many moments in the show that built up to this scene of Liko finally understanding and sharing the same thrill and fun of battling Floragato does and in this episode she cried because it took her so long to finally realize this. She cried because she finally gave it her all in a battle and wanted to win badly but lost. it was tears of relief if anything and even Katy more or less said that while comforting her.

I have notice that Elite Four and to the extent the Gym Leaders are more treated as mentors from previous series. I like how they encourage the characters to reach their full potential while giving them advice on how they can do better or reflect on their actions.

For the purpose of world building in the anime that's how it should be, for a game the Elite 4 should be kept distant and the top step in a long set of stairs we need to climb, and as we travel the region we hear about how strong they are to build the tension and Lore, but it's also boring if they are just forgotten and are bland NPCs.

It really makes the school thing work even more when you add in the Elite 4 being tied to the school as extra faculty (now I wonder if Rika and Larry have substituted classes since Hassel is already one of the teachers while Poppy is almost old enough to enrol as a student) due to Geeta being Champion and School Chairwoman. It also reminds me a little of Lorelei in the older anime. Yes, she was absolutely untouchable as an opponent. But her way of living actually helped humble Ash a little which was one of those earlier steps towards growth, and Misty and Tracey learned things from her too regarding their relationships and styles to approaching Pokémon and training. Which again felt fitting since Misty idolised her, and then even Tracey, who was more focused on research than battles, became a fan of hers because of her way of dealing with Pokémon.

I find interesting that apparently she has Kansai accent in the anime. It's interesting because some people already speculated that she could be from Johto due to her connection to paldea's version of the wooper line. Fun fact: While not confirmed, due to her aesthetic, it's very likely for Rika to work as a detective on top of her job in the elite four. And that would explain her role in the champion assessment. Specifically because it would explain why the champion assessment itself kinda looks like an interrogation scene.

In Dot's battle, I thought it wasn't bad & made sense how it played out & why she felt that way as a majority of her battle was really only Iono vs Poppy & she couldn't contribute; but they'll be other chances. For Roy's battle, it really was one-sided as most of it ended up with him powering up Baxcalibur to Glaive Rush a Double KO. - As for Sango's, her lost from the rule of 1st pokemon knocked out from either side loses & Glalie knocking itself out First with Self-Destruct to knock out everyone else definitely counts. - Onyx I sorta get why he lost: Onyx is a Soldier-Warrior. He wasn't going to sacrifice/let Tulip (his tag partner/backup~subordinate) be defeated so he & Garganacl took the hit for her which made them lose. If Onyx hadn't, he'd feel like it'd be disgraceful to him. He really is a Soldier with a Warrior's Honor & Pride. He might be my Favorite Explorer

Horizons must have an episode where Rika and Poppy are like sisters while tagging along with Liko, Roy, and Dot as long as Paldea arc continues. That includes having a backstory how Poppy became the youngest Elite 4 Trailer in any region. Since the Ash era didn’t show much of the Elite Four’s story or multiple appearances other than their strength, I’m hoping Horizons changes that in future adventures.

I love the extra dialogue and backstory we get with the Elite Four within the SV DLC. Once you invite Poppy to be a guest at Blueberry Academy, you find out that she was invited to be an E4 member after Geeta found out she was being bullied and shunned for being too strong. Lots of kids were afraid of her and she had no friends until Geeta asked her to be a part of the league

I’m dead at the first part lol but it’s really the “Pokemon” themselves that make the “Pokemon Anime” unique. Horizons is being very ambitious when it comes to where they want to take the series, so theirs a lot of coals in the fire rn so I can see why they would call it “generic” because it lacks direction. The 25 year “Ash Era” conditioning is an unavoidable factor that is keeping ppl on the fence so I mean Liko just really has to prove herself worthy of carrying the new generation to greatness, but it’s early and I don’t think the writers care about converting fans more so than telling a good story

I feel like Pokemon in general is Maturing a bit. The stories have a meaning behind them that adults can understand and get invested in while also having that fun pokemon feel for the younger audience. I hope that Pokémon as a franchise can keep the more mature story's and themes going forward. It's refreshing and with Gen 10 being the next Generation I wouldn't be surprised if Game Freak wants to do a Gen 5 and try to redefine the series. I honestly think that this is what there trying to do anyways with finishing Ash's story. It feels like they took what they learned from Gen 5 and are applying it to make the franchise itself better. But who knows.

I laughed so hard with discharge being the first thing Iono did, the prospect of them losing right there was hilarious, but thankfully the battle went on, ending with Dot's victory through strategy, a unsatisfying one though, but she would have better chances of Quaxly had fighting moves they will learn later on. Roy brings the best fights once again and Brassius continues as the GOAT, the man is awesome and inspiring. Hassel was set as a massive wall that while Roy couldn't climb over, he was shown just how much progress was made since his journey started, and also reinforces that Roy needs to think more of his battles, instead of just charging by instinct. Liko goes through her course without victories and even cries of frustration, she's a sore loser and that's great. That's part of her journey as a trainer she just started, if anything it only proves she has a lot of room to grow, and she will grow, but please let my girl get a W. Sango/Coral sent for the turn 1 self-destruction as expected and Onyx/Sidian losing because he protected the gym leader reinforces his dynamic, they aren't good with official ruled pokémon battles, but they are really powerful nonetheless.

Crazy thing is, with your point about Quaxly. He does have a fighting move, he learned Low Kick in the episode Dot battled her mom but he hardly uses it. My guess is Dot knows Quaxly's stab moves are more powerful than his non stab moves even though low kick would have absolutely dropped Copperajah or at least hindered his movement a bit. Also Liko isn't a sore loser, she's finally understanding Floragato's thrill for battle and she loved battling with her so much it made her cry when it was over. She didn't cry because she lost but because she didn't want that feeling being so connected to her partner to end.

You know maybe Horizons was way better than I thought... Whenever a series tries to do a new protagonist it comes off as complicated. If a series has to let go of a main character that character has to be memorable. It reminds me of the Legend of Korra, where people years ago hated Korra as a protagonist. They hated her for replacing Aang and they didn't like the series writing as well as Korra's arc. Admittedly some parts of Korra didn't age well like the love triangle between her, Asami and Mako. The cast not as developed in contrast to Avatar The Last Airbender. As well as the show cancelled. Personally, I believe Korra was a good heroine but the issue was that Aang's story overshadowed Korra's arc as being better executed. In contrast though, Liko is a better character in contrast to Ash. I believe despite people's complaints Liko is a good protagonist to replace Ash. Unlike Korra's, her predecessor didn't have a huge arc or had anything else. Unlike Aang, Ash was rather a static character in general especially during the early series. The typical Shonen Protagonist and it wasn't until later seasons develop Ash. For me Liko was needed as Ash's replacement, the opposite to his Yang. She was an anxious and unsure girl trying to do her best but her insecurities as well as helping others is holding her back. I believe the reason why early fans hated Korra before was that people felt Korra was too perfect as well as knowing the three elements. Also her attitude in the early seasons was a confident and cocky girl which might rub people the wrong way. She reminds me of Hazel from the Fairly Godparents a New Wish. Both she and Hazel are basically heroines that replaced the main big male lead. Unlike say Timmy and Ash, both aren't confident enough with their skills and despite gaining allies like Hazel getting Cosmo and Wanda and Liko habing Spirgattito. Both aren't strong mentally because they're unsure. Which is why I'm glad Pokemon made the risky decision of having a female star in the main series. I believe it was a marketing strategy to have a bigger female audience. But besides that I enjoyed Liko and I feel she deserves support. She's different from Ash and not just an Ash replacement. We all love Ash but he wasn't a deep character. To me Ash is like a vintage video game character while Liko is the modern video game character. Ash is our childhood but Liko is us growing to adulthood. Liko represents that some trainers aren't confident with their prowess but with the help of themselves and others they can sprint back. That's why I hope Liko doesn't get the Korra situation where the only reason she's hated is because she's a replacement of a former lead.
