The best part about the Mew glitch is how much it SOUNDS like your average garden-variety urban legend, but that it also *actually works.*
@NivMizzet892 жыл бұрын
My favorite thing about it is how it also works with different trainers. There is one particular trainer that lets you find Mew, but if you use a different trainer the sequence still works, you just encounter another random pokemon instead. I remember saving up on trainers just to see what they'd give. Also very funny if a young someone accidentally makes a mistake, is filled with excitement that the magic trick is really working...and then runs into a Nidoqueen instead of the promised Mew.

The glitch itself does work... Use teleport as pictured by Luke at the end above, defeat the first trainer in Misty's Gym immediately on the right hand side, then head straight to Nugget Bridge... Mew should "attack" before the 1st trainer on said bridge. ((You may have to teleport after defeating said trainer in the gym, I cannot remember as I did this about 10 years ago))

“Kids telling each other they’re doing something that’s fun”. Idk if Luke understands how profound that statement is. The ENTIRE reason why I got sucked into TES: Oblivion was because of this. You can get an infinite number of mews if you blackout during the trainer fight with the slowpoke.
@christianbarrett30402 жыл бұрын
In theory you can get many more by using the ditto trick within the mew glitch. It has been a long time since I did it, but basically the pokemon spawned by the mew glitch uses the special attack of the last defeated pokemon as a sort of seed, so by battling a ditto in the burned out building on cinabar using a pokemon with a specific special attack, letting ditto use transform to copy it, and then defeating ditto, you can force the desired spawn so long as ditto is the last pokemon encountered which is why cerulean is a good location to use the glitch. The real limitation is that you have a limited pool of trainers to fight that meet the criteria to be used with the glitch, they must walk at least 1 tile to challenge the player or you basically get stuck with unresponsive controls. Also the location to start the glitch in cerulean city is not the only one. There is also a gambler by the underground passage the circumvents saffron city going westward. The requirement is that the trainer has to be completely off your screen, notice you when you move one tile and have at least 1 tile between you and them. Then you immediately open your menu while they still have the exclamation point above their head, and either fly, teleport, or dig away (escape rope may work as well) landing in the desired city where you will complete the rest of the glitch before returning to the area where you started the glitch once you have defeated a trainer and can finally use your start menu again.

My god, the flood of nostalgia I got watching this...I was lucky to have been at the right age at the right time when Pokemania hit big. I remember my friends and I playing on our GameBoys and GameBoy Colors in school, showing off our Pokemon, giving each other advice on how to make it through a certain gym or route and talk about rumors and glitches like MissngNo and Blaine on top of the Cinnabar Island Gym, passing around the few Link Cables we had and trading and battling on the playground at lunchtime. We all watched the TV show and collected Pokemon cards too. The smell of a freshly opened booster pack of cards will live in my memories forever. My third grade teacher even banned Pokemon cards in the classroom! From second to fifth grade we lived and breathed Pokemon. Eventually, we all got older and went to different schools. Yu-Gi-Oh came and went, but was never able to capture the same magic that Pokemon had for us. In middle school I passed on my best Pokemon cards to my little cousins who were SO excited to have them. I lost my original Pokemon Blue and Silver when I moved away from home. Pokemon fell off my radar for a very long time after that..... I'm 31 now, and just recently bought a Nintendo Switch OLED. It's different, but I'm hoping to download some of the newer Pokemon games and take a trip down memory lane and hopefully share some of that old magic with my own kids someday.
@zeldablizzard2 жыл бұрын
Something strikes me as off about the assessment "the 151st pokemon made people excited to try the game, when the first 150 couldn't" Word of mouth definitely played a role, but it seems to me that people discovering Mew was just a factor of more people buying the game. It makes for a compelling story, but I think the series' popularity was inevitable. Tens of thousands of people were so excited about Mew they sent in cartridges they *already had*.

But I followed all the hype and urban myths regarding Mew, tried everything. of course, nothing worked. Until many, many years later when I found there was discovered a genuine way to get Mew. And to my amazement it worked. In my particular case, I also was playing Pokemon Stadium at the time, struggling with the trainer that had a Mew (I think, unless it was Mewtwo) in the night mode difficulty. The blasted thing had Thunderwave (paralysing my Mewtwo) and could recover health. I just could not beat this trainer. Until I had both a Mewtwo and a Mew thanks to this discovery. So not only did I finally got Mew, I also finally beat Pokemon Stadium completely. Double closure.

Hey, I really enjoyed this "Oxplain" thing youre doing. I am curious if, when making more, you tell us what the hell was up with the real game breaker, Missing number, or missingno as we called it. the glitch form blue found by surfing up and down which could both break your game and give you a millions rare candy and masterballs if they were the 6th item in your inventory.
@anonymous017922 жыл бұрын
I was absolutely hoping missingno would be here
@Rialgar422 жыл бұрын
When you surf at that spot, you are technically still inside the city, so the "unload city, load route" code did not run. Which means that the spot in memory where wild pokemon you may encounter are stored is not properly prepared. Depending on what you did before, this could cause the game to load Pokemon above level 100 or with a number beyond 151. In the later case, the code looking up the name of the pokemon would say "missing Number" (not sure why it only did that on my blue, my red had a specific combination of symbols NOT that). However, other parts of the code did NOT catch the error and read or wrote memory locations never intended to be referenced through battle. Just finding it would cause the number of items at the 7th(I think?) position in your inventory to be set to a number beyond 99. Really useful for candies and master balls. I THINK that was the game trying to mark it as seen in pokedex, but it may have been something else. Catching it (maybe marking it as caught in pokedex?) and using it in battle would start corrupting your save data. Related: If you caught some of the non-missingNo pokemon above level100 (a Golduck in my case), it could be leveled up even more with candies, but once you used in battle the level would be set to 100 and stay there. However, other stats would not reset. I still fondly remember it one-shooting EVERYTHING.
@Joe90h2 жыл бұрын
I remember being round a friend's house, the both of us with different pokemon games, and the both of us messing with the Missingno multiplication glitch. I was leveling pokemon with rare candies, and got into a rhythm using them until I ended up with "Rare Candy= 0". upset I had used up all the Rare candies in the game (I wasn't sure if there were anymore as I'd found every item) I shut off the game, turned it back on and started levelling stuff again. Only a few minutes later did I realise that I would have still had at least 100 rare candies, as you can't have "0" of an item.

This worked on Red version as well. I had both red and blue versions but mainly played Red and I did this a lot to duplicate items. I can’t remember if the method was slightly different on red or what, I think was some slight difference between the versions but you could do it on both. And also, it was definitely the 6th slot that got duped.

Just came here to say that I love all of your content. Between this and the top lists it feels like the early days of G4TV.

Used the glitch when I was a kid. Still have that mew stowed away on a Pokémon yellow cartridge. I was very proud of myself.
