I worked in teen helpline for six years and what you experienced we called being taken "emotionally hostage". You did the exactly right thing and for anyone watching this who's going through the same, you should know that: - If you want to try to help them, recommending seeking professional help and breaking contact IS the best thing for them. - Emotional hostagetaking is a manipulation tactic and you are NOT responsible for this persons actions. Even if they say you are. -You do NOT owe them anything. So if you are too overwhelmed to even recommend them seeking help, its okay to break contact entirely. They are not entitled to any of your time and your own welfare is your primary concern

"do you have a minute to talk" is how my boss pulled me to the side to make it sound like i was in trouble to my coworkers but i was just getting a raise 😂
@koganeitou5 ай бұрын
Big brain plays lmaoooo W boss. They understand the fish eat fish world and how even your coworkers will eat you alive if they know you get "special treatment" or literally anything that _they_ aren't getting lol, they can get extremely envious. I worked with a girl who was on welfare and basically got handed the job for free because they were "like" family to the boss, but not blood-related. She could only work a set amount of hours and only get paid so much hourly wage, so she'd intentionally work off the clock, take hour long lunches, etc, otherwise she'd lose her benefits for a month or 2 weeks, idk how it all worked but anyways, she made sure I'd remember this because I swear she told me this story like half a dozen times or at least expressed her anger about it and how much she hated this other coworker, who was getting paid way way more than her, but he was struggling and actually had to move a couple times while I was working there, had to take care of himself, his brother, pay rent to his aunt who he moved in with temporarily, and also had a girlfriend. But he wasn't out blowing his money on this and that. Meanwhile this chick who's had everything handed to her, is obnoxiously loud about going to a club EVERY SINGLE WEEKEND just to dance with guys but not want to even do anything with them, and acting surprised that they do, which shows she's self-aware because she's the one I hear this from, it's just all very weird. And she was living with her mom, which I won't judge, due to the state of the world and money rn, I have to do the same thing, but she wasn't even paying much for rent either. It's just like. I don't know. A mentality and perspective type thing. Even I feel bad for talking about these new games I was buying and playing to the other coworker, even if it was just because it was things I enjoyed, because I was more funding my hobbies (still within reason) while he was struggling and just making ends meet. There was talk about us all getting raises after some performance test at another location in the summer (never happened), and I just KNOW she was thinking, "he doesn't need that raise, he already has so much more pay than me,, he doesn't need it, he doesn't deserve it, it should only be me" LIke she even told me she didn't wanna know how much my pay was because she knew she'd be too mad to handle it. As if it's her business to begin with. Like...? Forgot to mention, the only reason she knew what dude's pay was, is because she opened his check that was in the office (it was already unsealed but she 100% pulled it out and looked at it) and she threw a fit at the boss (basically like her uncle which is why it was deemed as okay) Wild stuff man... I don't think I'd believe this story if I didn't live it myself! So if I were ever anyone's boss, I'd probably do the same lmao. But I rather just work from home anyways, cuz more freedom. XD

When I was a teen I'd vent to a friend CONSTANTLY about my depression and suicidal ideation, and there came a point where she just had to (metaphorically) sit me down and go "This is not good for my mental health and I don't think you're pursuing the help you need, I do not want to keep encouraging this." That broke my heart and even years later, though we're still friends, I feel awful about it, but it did make me stop venting and look into other avenues of getting help, because I didn't want to do that to other friends. What Charlie went through is different since that dude wasn't a friend and was very obsessive over him, but I wanted to say this because sometimes the best thing for a person like that is to go "I cannot help you, please get help" and leave it there.

Being in a situation like that where someone’s basically holding themselves “hostage” threatening their own life is just the absolute worst feeling. Because once you’re in that situation there’s nothing you can really do. It’s easy to think you’d say “that’s not my problem” in that type of scenario, but when it actually does happen you feel a level of responsibility for that person. It’s truly terrifying, knowing what you say next may prevent or cause someone to do something horrible. Of course it sucks for the person feeling that way, but they really need to seek actual professional help, because I don’t think they understand the emotional torment they cause when then put that type of responsibility for their lives on someone else

It's a malicious tactic. They KNOW the emotional turmoil it causes, they know it'll make people want to stay, that's why they do it. I've known too many people like this and I dropped them like hot potatoes, and guess what? They're still kicking out there, living and breathing and hopefully have grown up and gotten professional help since then. It's scary the first few times you deal with people like that, but once you recognize what's going on? Just run.
@Newt27995 ай бұрын
@@Cuil Yeah it’s manipulative for sure, whether or not they realize it. I think in most cases it is safe to run like that because they won’t actually do anything. As scary as it is, you're not responsible for someone's safety if they're using it as a manipulation tactic. It's imperative you separate yourself from that person upon seeing these red flags. I've already experienced this once and marched through it against my best judgement. I won't ever do that again.
@Leequidude5 ай бұрын
Happened to me too long ago. It was a girl I met in Twitter. Separated myself (I talked about that with her) and never came back. She started tweeting about depression and ending it all. Fast forward to now a year and a half later and she's doing fine. Chronically in Twitter still reposting and posting. To anyone reading this comment thread, chances are it is indeed a manipulative tactic to get you in their life, not caring about inconveniencing yours and that's not friendship. Do what Charlie says, advice professional help ONCE and leave. Anything that happens or doesn't happen isn't your fault or even your concern anymore. Continue your life inside and outside your house 👍.

Exactly, the second someone starts threatening self-harm/s*icide to coerce you into behaving a certain way via emotional blackmail, you now have full permission to tell them that it's not your responsibility, that it's unreasonable to demand you walk on eggshells for fear of them maybe harming themself and that, if they're serious, they need to go to talk to a professional instead. And if you're as mean as me, you can also say "Fine, do it. No, go ahead, you said you would, so do it". They're not for real, it's just a coercive tactic and nothing makes that clearer than when they just stare back sheepishly because they didn't plan for that reaction.

They were alive, but pissed the cops were called. There would be many breakdowns from them and me trying to help out. So many "I promise I changed! I'm seeing a new therapist!" that back into the usual messes. Years go by and, due to my own mental issues, fell into a deep depression of my own. And becauae of this I realized I'm not fit enough to help anyone else - not even myself. I had it. I broke things off with that friend. They got clingy and would make new accounts and try to talk to me through my other friends. My friends are well aware of these episodes and behaviors and my stance on it. I want nothing to do with this person. It was tough, but I'm glad I freed myself. Oh, also my mental health is amazing nowadays (due to many other reasons, not just this).
@damienperez77765 ай бұрын
Not trying to discredit if the other person had a mental illness but when im having depressive episodes I don't reach out to anyone because I already realize how much of a burden my mental health takes on me that I don't want to force that onto others. Person may just want companionship because they're lonely.

Great that you got better man. The same stuff happened to me with my ex. Every time I'd breakdown from the emotional distraught it was always "I can change! I can stop right now!" (she was abusing drugs). Luckily at some point I came to my senses through other friends telling me to break things up. And like you said, it's always tough but the toughest situations make you grow and learn the most.
@kidscast58425 ай бұрын
@@damienperez7776for sure they do, but there is a way to ask without being clingy and respecting boundaries. The way this person kept making accounts and trying to push for contact when they clearly did not want it because it was just such an emotional tax especially given their own issues is just too much and this person was 100% right for breaking contact. Some people only tell you about all the wrong in their life and have no room for other subjects nor have any awareness and/or care of your boundaries.

I know this is one comment among thousands but thank you for sharing your own story. That is an all too common situation young people on the internet experience from other individuals and it's very, very hard to deal with at the time even though in hindsight it is so easy to say "well I should have just blocked them." The s**cide baiting, the manipulation, the clinging-on -- it is so hard to handle and I really hope you sharing your story allows others (especially men) to feel less like they're weird for experiencing the same thing. As a woman I know I've dealt with it on many occasions over my youth but it's something that can happen to anyone and it's so difficult to get out of.

@@Joem2648 yeah true, but one gender very grossly imbalances the scales on the specific topic of divide baiting and self harm, that same gender is also VERY DAMN SIMILARLY, EXACTLY TO CORRECT MYSELF, doing the self harm thing ingeneral -not even for the threatening relationship for thing, just self harm to themselves. And we all know why they do it. It’s the same reason they paint their cars all pink at 50/60yrs old. The same reason 45 yr olds wear booty shorts and wear all pink clothing and such type styles. It’s because the attention well is never deep enough, it’s astonishing the greed and never ending lust and embarrassing 🙈 insecurity of attention seeking. When does it end? When do you get satisfied? When can you ever turn it off and act normal and not desperately clamor for attention still at 40/50/60 even 70 yrs old! It’s gross, you’re 40. I don’t need to comment on the 50/60s. There’s no debate, everyone’s gross at that age. Not sorry, because everyone is at that age. But for some strange reason one gender has the other outpaced by light years literally and generations length in categorizing and objectifying the rationality in attention and praise and being liked and cool and popular waaayyyy before 50/60yrs old. Folks, get a grip, it’s not even close to sexy, it’s gross. Not figuratively, literally you are gross. Nobody thinks you’re cool or sexy and attractive. Grow up, you’re 60. Get a grip

If you tell someone “Hey can you call me?” Or “Can we talk?” When it’s not serious please ADD THAT IN! Say “Hey when you got a minute could you call me, nothing serious just whenever you get the chance”. Even if it’s slightly serious just say it as someone who runs a business you’re gonna get a faster response time and an honest non-stressed answer. I don’t even like it from my coolest employee to my best friend! “Hey when you have a minute can we talk?” FROM anyone! No one likes that! Unrelated cause this guys a freak but just a little life advice.

Last 'Can we talk?' I had was from my fiance. I was in the shower getting ready for work when he pokes his head in the bathroom with those three dreaded words. I'm rinsing the shampoo out all 'oookay?". He goes into how he's been thinking about this for a while, wasn't sure how to bring it up to me..etc.. and I'm thinking the absolute worst. Turned out he'd been watching a lot of cooking shows and was wanting to get into bread making, so since buying a bread maker is the sort of purchase we discuss together, that was his 'Can we talk'. I think I hit my target heart rate until he mentioned the bread maker. I chalk it up for how many times I've texted him 'we'll talk in the car' when something crazy silly happened at work and I'd rather just share the story than try to type it all out in text.

@@MSinistrari Yeah my wife knows I don’t like that this was only a few months ago days before our wedding and she says ‘I’m sorry but can we talk this has been bothering me and my parents for a while. I’m at my parents house whenever you’re ready.’ I go and her dad says ‘I’m sorry about all this’ then they all come out and she says ‘We need you to sign these papers…. I’m so sorry’ I just said what papers? They open the garage and it’s a Mercedes AMG G63 ‘Stronger than diamonds edition’ only 300 worldwide the G wagon was my dream car. I’m crying telling them thank you and saying how much I love them all. Then her dad says ‘Wait you both still have to sign this.’ It was papers to their house we were living in next to them in Bel Air and their other house in S.L.O. And SF. He said ‘You’re our son so everything we have is yours’ I came from a single mother who worked very hard and saved but grew up poor and didn’t have a good relationship with my dad so this made me cry. I never knew she and her family was this wealthy till I proposed she purposely hid it. Now I work for her father’s company and get to take my little sisters and mom who are from the same father on trips around the world for vacations. The oldest is 7 and youngest is 3 we’re only 24 but it’s like having kids. A week ago I had a SERIOUS nightmare that I was homeless and this was a dream. I’m just so grateful

I remember being in a similar situation when I was in like 8th-9th grade. Tho it didn’t get as serious bc it was another kid around my age for sure, but they would always kinda trauma dump and want to talk to the point that I had to cut things off for my own mental health. That whole situation involving his Voice Acting role, reminds me of when I'd sometimes get DMs from people asking me for art commissions. Instead of simply telling me what they want me to draw, they turn it into a conversation that's unrelated to a commission. Sometimes there's users out there who just want to shower their ideas to someone but they have no place or friends to do so. They're desperate for a friend, but don't know how to properly go about it.
