Pole Barn Garage / Shop - 32'x48'x12' - Part 2

This is the second video in the series about building a garage/shop behind my house. This has been a challenging but rewarding DIY project so far. This video takes you through roofing, window framing, house wrap, steel siding, and metal trim. By the end of the video the outside of the building is 95% done.

You likely did not know of RR Buildings before you got started, he has posted lots of videos of build series (each series has its own playlist for easier searching and playback). He shows a lot of his tricks for DIY builders to use themselves for easier panel install. trimming and cleaner nicer finishes.

Joshua79C C he is awesome! Watching his videos gave me the confidence to build it myself. I followed his advice wherever I could (like using a punch instead of drilling the metal). He makes those trim cuts look so easy.

Great build! can you tell me why you went with shingles instead of metal roof?

Thanks! Mostly I wanted to match the house. I also thought at the time that shingles would be easier to deal with if the building wasn’t perfectly square. In hind site I would do steel. It was easy to work with for the walls and I think it looks better.

@@ShawnFerret That's cool you're here in the mitten, I'm just east of Grand Rapids. I plan to build the same size with a couple 12x48 lean tos. I have the site cleared of trees, but want to drop a few more into the opening as it will be easier to do that than to take them down once it's built. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Jeremy Hayden yes, this was a kit sold by Chelsea Lumber. Not very DIY friendly. Menards would be a great option.

If you don’t mind, how much did the total cost of the building run you?

Tim Kazadaev what you see here represents $19k of materials and $1k permit fee. When the building is complete with concrete floor, electrical, insulation, drywall, etc, I will have spent about $35k.

Why did you use shingles instead of steel roofing?

hilltim54 I actually didn’t trust myself to get the building square enough, so I thought roof steel would never line up right. I knew I could compensate easily with shingles if the building was off-square (it ended up within 1” anyway). If I did it again, I would go with steel on the roof. In hindsight it would have been way easier than OSB and shingles, and I think steel looks great too.

hilltim54 the siding is made by Jensen Bridge and Supply Co, but I ordered it through Chelsea Lumber.
