Cheers Kris. Great video. I was hoping for a really clear and obvious improvement on efficiency compared to the dual motor. This result is good to bring those expectations back down to earth!

Dude, thank for the effort you put into your videos; especially for the high speed run! A 600km trip must be exhausting, and you probably need to wait quite a bit for the cars to reach around 100% SOC. Really appreciate your content!

When, do you think, Polestar will offer more efficient wheel options? By the way, has some owner out there mounted aftermarket smaller wheels and did it impact range?
@jezw1138

Another interesting video Kris. The efficiency increases of single motor over dual motor seem modest so it would be great if you could give your thoughts on the differences in drivability between the two versions. It looks like a comfortable cruiser on the highway and there is obviously a cost saving with the single motor, but does it feel like a compromise?
@volvodashcam
@volvodashcam 3 жыл бұрын
On the dual motor the difference between 19" and 20" wheels are significant.. so to make a real comparison you need to have the single motor version with the 19" wheels.

Dutch reviews show the single motor roughly 16,7% more efficient than dual motor. But remember that everything is flat in Netherlands haha.

Hopefully it is only due to the bigger wheels. Otherwise, polestar should really go back to the drawing board. Especially, now that the firts tests of the EQS are coming out, the lack of efficiency hurts. By the way, why can’t you choose appropriate wheel sizes when you make a configuration of the Polestar 2 ? Big wheels on an EV are even more absurd, than on an ICE. The most efficient EQS runs on ”balloons”. They may not look pretty, but they are decisive for efficiency and allow (even) more ride confort and (even) less road noise.

does the dual motor version use both motors all the time or does a motor switch off when its mot needed? If it does shut down one motor is the motor that's running smaller than the single motor of the single motor car?

Unlikely. Only difference is heat pump and the charging curve is limited through software. There was a software update a few months ago that had it improved.

is the 615, WLTP range? cos in that case, you can throw away around 20%, that would be 495, which you could do, with around 75KM/h, at least thats my uneducated guess... or even do 550-ish if you only drive in the city with 45-55KM/h...

Nice video! Question, when you to a "range test", this for me is saying "how far the car will travel in distance in a single charge". So I am really missing something here haha. Why are you charging the car during the test? Sorry again, this is maybe obvious if I had watched all your videos. Another question, if I would own an EV like this and go for a longer road trip. should I aim to find a charging station when battery closer to 20% or even lower if I'd follow the recommendations? Also, is the speed of charging higher at a certain percentage of battery orr is this always different depending on car? Will soon order the ps2 lr or the m3 lr depending on what I learn ... I know that there are some out there reading this saying " watch all of the videos and you'll find out" :). Thanks ahead for any thoughts or answers I might get! Keep up the good work Kris!

Well if you like both cars equally and range is your main concern, it is clear that the M3 is way more efficient. My problem is that I don't like the Tesla exterior, so for me it is down to either P2 or i4. i4 turned out to be quite conservative in terms of looks, but the range and drag coefficient are very promising. It is recommended to keep your charge at 10-20% (20% more ideal) as it will give you the best charging. Every EV has a different charging curve, you can find most curves on the Ionity website if I am not mistaken.

@@stefhendricks 🙏🏻 Thanks, really appreciate your answer . What is i4? Also, since I posted this I now am open to even buy the sr plus 2021 mic from Tesla . To be honest I like more the ps2 for better build of the car but IMO i think the user experience and the overall technology is superior in the Tesla . If it were the other way around I would pick the ps2 without a blink. It seems as if they don’t think like normal “legacy brand manufacturers “. They are not just a company building a car … hard decision but now after reading about the latest flp battery I am quite happy I can go down in price and don’t get range anxiety anymore… it is more constructed to be charged at 100% without degrading the battery.

Interesting! I am sure the FWD is more efficient under the exact same conditions, with the same wheels.. However, not much. 40 km of range according to WLTP. Which in real life is more like 25 to 30 km. That’s like 3 minutes of extra charging. In Norway, the AWD is only 4,000 EUR more. For that you get the 0-100 time down from 7,4 to 4,7 seconds! 🏎 And- even more important, a totally different kind of grip and driving dynamics. Priceless, especially in cold climate regions. Last but not least, it’s the second hand value.. In some markets, you might actually get all of those 4,000 back when you sell. A total no brainer IMO. 🙂

Honestly, if anything this proves that external factors are more important than "small" changes on the car itself. Once you have 3-4-5 uncontrollable variables (Wheelsize, weather, traffic, chargers not working, different charging strategies and so on) the results become too inconsistent for a real comparison. This is the reason why lab testing is standardized. As someone said below, these tests are good for a general idea of the car (is it roughly what they say it is), I'd rather get a subjective score based on your opinion (i.e is this a bad/good/great car) or maybe just a "buy/don't buy" recommendation. If I wanted just cold hard numbers I'd go look at WLTP figures. They may be off, but at least they are consistent :) Trust in your opinion/expertise, you should be confident enough to do the same!
@inteallsviktigt
@inteallsviktigt 3 жыл бұрын
Consistently being 20-30% off from reality is in my eyes nothing more than guidinginformation. The WLTP is just as useless as the old NEDC standard. Laboratory tests are not valuable as we don’t drive in labs but in messy realities. That’s why I prefer the US EPA standard instead as it’s closer to reality in every case
@XLoaferY
@XLoaferY 3 жыл бұрын
@@inteallsviktigt depends on what you want from your numbers. want to test 1 car? Subjective tests are fine. Want to compare? Has to be the same conditions, which won't happen in real life.

@@XLoaferY the just Ned to be as close as possible. What are you supposed to do with lab results if you can’t get these numbers in reality? Wind speed is not taken in to consideration, temperatures outside, resistance to the ground, wheel size, traffic, start and stop, negative temperatures etc etc. the tests never materialize on the actual road for anyone. These subjective tests are always closer to reality when we look at what range customers actually get within few percent.

Hi Kris, both your and Bjorn’s multiple tests tend to show that, on sustained normal mostly motorway conditions, the difference in consumption between 2WD and 4WD equivalent models is negligible and far less - if any at all - than what the WLTP values indicate. I would tend to think that most of these 4WD versions actually use only one motor during most of the time (the other one is normally an induction motor, which has very little drag) makes the difference result mostly from the rather small higher weight of the 4WD versions. I’m pretty sure that a mountain road test with a sporty drive would tell a totally different story. Maybe you would want to try this one day? Thanks for your interesting videos!

It's only my opinion Kris but making these videos and solely concentrating on range can be a little dull, why don't you combine that side of it with doing a normal test drive ? just as you used to do with petrol,Diesel, and hybrid cars of old ! You know can you imagine having a road test on a petrol car solely concentrating on how many MPG it does !

@stefhendricks
@stefhendricks 2 жыл бұрын
So are you saying everybody with an ICE car was driving BMW? Apart from maybe technical limitations or the platform originally designed for the XC40, the choice for FWD might have to do with traditions in Nordic countries where FWD is usually easier to drive through snow than RWD. Apart from that, a lot of people (all over the world) drive like morons and while today it shouldn't matter that much anymore because of technology, RWD is still a little more risky to drive, especially at high speeds.

@@stefhendricks no, merely saying that when you pay big bucks for a 2wd car you expect it to be rwd, like every other expensive car, also making it rwd would have made more space in the frunk, simply put they would sell more if it were rwd rather than fwd
