Police gang stop biker - roadside lecture after police driver made illegal turn

Things 'step up' in this London police stop because I could not agree with the professional police drivers' understanding of the speed limit.
The video shows the police van making an illegal right turn from London's Oxford Street into Regent Street. After this video was shown to the drivers' bosses this police sargent no longer works for the met police.
I expect I'll get a lot of haters for this video as is traditional for the Internet, probably from NPC coppers :)) If the police stopped every delivery driver that rode around a police vehicle London would grind to a halt and I assume that the police would never return back to the station because of having to stop every cyclist they see that goes through a red light.

You can see what happened here. The first cop was totally reasonable when he started and also when he was taking the particulars down. The problem is there are not enough like him. The driver was the one who caused all the nonsense because he got his ego bruised he stopped the vehicle and took up all those resources just to make himself feel better. He's a pillock and it would appear that his colleagues seem to know already - they didn't exactly get behind their guy!!

For all you know they were on their way to a community engagement project. Not so much when so close to the pathway... you could see the people were close to the road... sound of an exhaust sharply rising for the overtake could easily scare someone into falling out into the road. Should've slowed down and then given them what for... Bus area is not a bus lane, its an area for them to pull over. There were no markings to separate "lanes" and therefore technically the officer is correct in that it is a single carriageway. I ride and use the lanes like Toast all the time but I also know that technically I'd be in the wrong- think its more a case of 60/40 in favour of toast.

@Goet Goet Have been riding since 2005 and in London, all the time for work purposes and everywhere else too. Once did 10000 miles in 3 months... but, just because you and I ride a lot, doesn't make us better riders. You could argue perhaps the more we ride, the more risks we take.. You aren't allowed to undertake according to the Highway Code- (rule 267) so it is illegal, however filtering warrants either side so its a bit of a grey area there..the thing is, you state moving slowly in lanes, however there is only one lane and a bus park- it is not a lane by definition. I agree that most people would jump out of the way but in this instance I think he could have been more prudent.. Anyhow, pleasant chatting..ride safe!

I'm a police trained driver and the standard I see of police drivers in a lot of cases is just APPALLING. They know they are not going to be stopped and can simply lie their way out of the matter when challenged, but then that is the police all over. They are not interested in protecting people, simply in enFORCING "laws" which are whatever they decide they are. I find a simply solution is to start reeling off a whole load of made up court cases as precedent. They get confused and walk away.

It’s not a lane change though, technically they are right and the uploader is wrong. They are in front of him in a single file lane of traffic, he interprets the bus stop as a second lane, and moves into it and builds up momentum. The carrier which is still in front at this point moves to the left to get into the straight ahead lane. In reality the biker should have just stayed behind them. In any case, he shouldn’t be undertaking them on the left hand side, the only time you are allowed to do this is in slow moving traffic, I.e at a set of lights, not when they are going at road speed. In the video he says it’s 2 lanes, it’s not, it does GO into 2 lanes, but at the point he flies up the inside and tries to go past using the bus stop area it’s not only undertaking but also still a single lane, it hasn’t split into two lanes yet.

Both rider and driver were wrong in my opinion. I’m also a motorcyclist and in hindsight, I would have decelerated, moved back and away from the van and sounded my horn to make a point. There was sleet, it’s a damp road, so accelerating the way you did was over the top, dangerous for you, them and others walking about. Luckily nobody ran across the road in front of you, which people tend to do in a busy high street.

i have to say when watching the incident the first time i can see where you thought the police van was going into the right turn lane, when watching it and looking at it from the van drivers point of view i can see where he was coming from too, you didnt wait to see which lane he was going into at the lane split and he was right to say that you should have waited, from the vans position on the road he could have gone either way. so fault on both sides there as the van driver could have checked his mirrors as he should do, then he would have seen you and could have given you chance to get by considering it was not clear which lane he was choosing from the outside observer. this is just an independent opinion free of bias, even though i wouldnt trust a police officer if they told me the dam sky was blue.

Undertaking is legal "only when safe to do so" I got that from a County Court Judge. In a case that I was involved in. it was turning into 2 lanes and he was seemingly moving over to the right, possibly to turn right. I'd have done the same thing.

Had this myself 2 days ago , copper was driving 44 miles a hour in a 50 zone I indicate and go past him ...(on a dual carriageway) proceed to pull safely back in front of him ...and boom blue lights on ...and the standard reply ...why you speeding ! Rewatched video, it’s s single lane with a stop for the bus, not to be confused with a bus lane , he undertakes on a single lane. Motorbike was at fault, edited as people are retarded. at 50 seconds in it clearly says Bus Stop, all bus lanes are clearly marked as Bus Lanes, this road has been widend to allow a bus stop as not to impede traffic. It's a double lane and the police van was in the right hand lane like he was turning right as per the arrows on the road. Police van then chops left without indicating so the guy on the bike gets himself out of trouble by accelerating quickly. Coppers are at fault here.

I think I might be against the grain here from reading the comments but, I think the Police were sound. I replayed the manoeuvre several times and each time I cannot see why you were on the inside. You made an honest mistake being there and made maybe not the best decision to get out of danger but, no-one was hurt and I think the Police had the same mindset, they just wanted to have a chat about road safety and make sure you are not someone crazy under the helmet, this is what we expect from our Police.

Well said John. Had conversation recently about undertaking slow middle lane drivers on motorways. As long as you are within speed limit, and pass safely, there is no law against undertaking. As far as I see it, police driver did not signal after passing bus stop, which IS a lane of traffic. (You can drive through bus stops, so not sure why officer left it until after the bus stop to start veering left (with no indicator)). Also, spot on about not giving lisence etc, although can be a pain to get to nearest station to produce them, as so many stations have now closed, so they are usually few and far between.! Best advice, when dealing with police is give details (if a traffic stop), and say as little as possible. Don't engage in chit chat, SOME officers will use anything you say to look for further issues to ticket you for.

The only exception is where the bus stop marking is in a layby built specifically for the purpose of the bus stop, in which case it would not be a lane of the road. (The incident in the video is clearly not a layby type bus stop).

I normally watch these downloads to have a laugh at incompetent police work but in this instance you were in the wrong. That section of the road converged into one lane then split back into two lanes immediately after you undertook him. You were badly positioned and rather than slow down to allow the police van to pass you accelerated, narrowly missing that pedestrian on your left.

The maneuver I made was perfectly legal, and yes we riders are used to crap driving which is why towards the end of the video I say I didn't think nothing of the maneuver, it's just what happens in London. The police driver chose to make a meal out of it, and had this gone to court I would have won and then sought recompense from the Met for my time being wasted. I think the police driver was just but hurt because of the sound of my bike made it seemed I was going faster than I was, a common mistake.

forward your dash cam footage to the road policing dept and they will use it to serve a notice of prosecution to the offending driver, for driving without due care and attention, no signal and changing lanes without checking his mirror. He will have no chance to dispute the alleged offence as he can not have access to the video evidence as it as it is not from a police camera.So his only option is to accept the prosecution.

I don't think the police driver knows the difference between a bus stop and a bus lane as he drove on the right avoiding the bus stop markings maybe thinking it was a bus lane. When he passed the bus stop markings then moved to the left without indicating, or was going to go right at the lights but then changed his mind, either way, mirror,signal, mirror, manoeuvre would have prevented this situation from happening.

Alright, police van full of police possibly talking ? Police driver SHOULD have continued in the left hand position (normal driving position)WHEN bus stop appeared but DIDN'T. The bus in front was moving !!! We drive on the left in the uk, UNLESS turning right or overtaking. He wasn't in the correct position for traveling ahead. Then had to move to the correct position as right hand lane AGAIN IS FOR TURNING RIGHT OR OVERTAKING !!! Biker could assume YES he was going to turn right, UNTIL he started to drift into the correct position(signalling is not compulsory if not needed for changing lanes) Look asses decide act wasn't done in my opinion by driver of the police van. Bike then done a stupid exhilaration which could have done him harm or the pedestrian that was on the pavement, If the van moved more abruptly into correct driving position. Braking to slow and let the van correct his mistake could have saved a worst mistake. Biker caused more danger and got spoken too. Learn or possibly get killed !!

@Carlos Maron Watch it back. I am into psychology and trust me there was no bullying by anyone and it was mentioned in the video that the officer had the hump with him. He didn't. It was a lane split at traffic lights the other one was a right hand turn. Every car that wants to go straight on runs through there moving into the left and generally doesn't indicate. If you fly up the left of a Vehicle you risk your own safety exactly what the officer said. This is a case of someone having a attitude towards the police and it coming out on a simple interaction. Without good police officers like these this country would be fucked. I am totally disappointed in the behaviour of Mr beans on Toast he's got this completely wrong.
