As a european LEO, It seems like riot control in the US hasn't really changed since the 70's. I find the lack of riotshield and the wooden batons quite strange. Shields are very important to protect against rocks, molotovs, large projectiles. Long rubber batons cannot be destroyed. We don't use a lot of teargas grenades. Large sprayscans are preferred. The watercannon is the most important tool. At large riots we use two or three of them.
@alexnewell65044 жыл бұрын
Ehh. Watercannons aren't an option in the U.S. looks way too bad given our history.
@ftdefiance14 жыл бұрын
We used long batons and shields in the past the decision not to use them is political.

well i guess you are not a german cop, because they rarely use riot shields........they have pretty good bodyarmour including the schuberth p100f riothelmet with a kevlar shell and a visorstrengh of 6mm.............still pretty useless when you got struck by a pavement plate weighting 15 kg which is thrown from 6 meters against your running direction....KO guaranteed....

American police stations are already severely underfunded, people say spending 1 million dollars on the police is too much, well they don't think around the edges just the surface, the 1 million is used for vehicles maintenance gasoline in the cars and general upkeep of them. It's also used for station upkeep like repairs if needed cleaning supplies food, water bills gas and electric bills heating bills, and some times rent. It's also used for training, there's too much of that to list off, officer salaries insurance pentions, so by the end of everything they only have a few thousand left for gear, and gearing up tons of officers usually isn't cheap

What do you mean by "taking in"? Riot gear has martial and militaristic appearance, so it's deployment can escalate a situation. Not every demonstration needs officers in riot gear, only actual riots do. There is a reaaon why Camden, NJ has chosen these de-escalative tactics.

Against tear gas a P3 particulate filter is perfectly fine as tear gas or CS gas is actually a very fine powder, so technically reusing a filter would be fine as long as the filter isn’t clogged

This is from an Australian/European perspective, but it feels as if crowd control is quite heavily based on pyrotechnics and technology in the US. In Australia the most common thing used is the big fire extinguishers of capsicum spray and sometimes batons, same goes for Europe. Why is it that American police forces use more technical equipment more often.

As we are required to have a straight or PR-24 baton in addition to the extendable baton on belt or vest. I got lucky and found a 24” baton that will extend to 36” Monadnock military surplus baton, its aluminum and polymer . Check online got mine from a surplus mail order in PA 2 years ago for $20 on sale. Also for those old enough to remember about 2010-2014 DHS did classes for biohazard Training if you kept the bags they have tyvek coveralls a drop leg Avon mask carrier along with mask and a practice filter to change cartridges if you cannot retreat to a safe place but you are out of air. I keep mine on my trunk bag. It meets the Berry amendment if you’re department requires US made product. Shop around find a used one, will fit the standard baton ring, including the ones with a beaver tooth.

Don’t know if it would work for you but I have a large heavy duty split ring (maybe 1.5”) that I threaded into the chin strap on my helmet. That way I can secure and carry the helmet hanging from my belt on a carabiner. It is very bulky and heavy and might not be the way your SOPs are set up but it’s popular where I am. I’ve done the same thing with my heavy duty gloves. Just make sure you use a locking carabiner in case you get bumped!

Tommy's comments on rocks are important. Rocks a very common threat everybody will face in a riot, even bystanders. And one of the biggest signs a riot is going to break out soon in an area is loose street signs. Prior to a riot, agitators will loosen multiple street signs so they can rip the signs out to use as makeshift weapons. This also creates lots of rocks for other rioters to grab and use. Stay safe out there, y'all.
