Police Sergeant Blues Robert Wilkins 1930

It’s been a while since I posted anything, sorry about that ! I’ve been very busy with school & sports ! This is my favourite tune to play at the minute Robert Wilkins famous Police sergeant blues played on the Waterloo WL-S Deluxe with 80-20 Elixir Nano webs 12-53s.

I started playing guitar at 17 years old. My choice for direction was Donovan and when I realised I was playing alternating based fingerprinting, I bought a Stefan Grossman LP that come with tablature. This was in 1973. I play similar tunes as yourself with the Rev Gary Davis direction. I later years when I was fortunate enough to have a couple of hours with Woody Mann( RIP Sir you are another special one who took lessons from Rev Gary Davis) who was an absolute joy to hear him play and talk about stories of his time with Rev Gary Davis. Only 4 of us in the room for a couple of hours with an exceptional guitar player as well as a wonderful human being.

Excellent playing. Just excellent. Your picking reminds me of Etta Baker and her song "Knoxville Rag". Kenny Wayne Shephard's "10 Days Out", a documentary and soundtrack finding old blues musicians, like Etta Baker, is a gem. Someday in the future, maybe you too will be visited by a youngster searching for roots.

I love the tonal quality of your voice. It’s like going back in time and listening to the truly great singers from so long ago. But obviously you’re really good on guitar too. It’s pretty unusual for anyone to be an excellent singer and player too. Offhand I can’t really think of anyone nowadays who is. (You two are different styles but Nora Jones is really good too. I think she plays mostly piano though. But I really like her voice as well.)

I watched this video a few months ago and it inspired me to try playing the guitar break on this song - still a work in progress. If the Robert Wilkins original is a solo track , it sounds like he was doing all this but adding some down strums.

I did a video of this song as soon as I'd thought I'd got to grips with it which is the same mistake i always make, i should have practised a wee while longer... anyway youre correct, brush with your thumb, or down strum as you say on youre chicks instead of playing single notes...kinda...some of the time...thats what your hearing. Good luck with it 👍
