Frank realizes he doesn't have enough evidence to arrest Eddie, so he angrily tells the other policeman to tell Eddie, the alleged bomber, to 'take off' and leave the police station. The twist then comes when the other policeman instead goes to the window, which suddenly looks out over an airstrip, and gestures to a waiting plane -- a military bomber -- indicating that it should take off.

I was only 6 when this aired, but was so sad when it got canceled after only 4 episodes. And yet Three's Company stayed on the air for 8 years. My first lesson that some shows are too smart and too funny for primetime.

It was too early on to be appreciated, but even so there's no way they could have kept up this level of humor for long. If they came up with enough material for a whole season it'd have been an achievement. But it'd be funny to see them needing to reference every single villain by the end of a season, or driving into dozens of trash cans to represent the episode number after that many episodes.

I've come to appreciate that it's better for a show to end production while it's great, and everyone on the creative team is dialed in than for it to run until it stinks. Like fish and houseguests. This was a different time, where I didn't know what a VCR was yet, so once a short lived TV went off the air, it was gone forever. It wasn't just that there'd be no more new episodes, but I'd never see a rerun of it. But then a few unexpected things happened. ZAZ revisited the project as a feature film years later. They reused some of the old gags, but I didn't care. They added plenty of new ones. Then that movie was rightly successful enough for a sequel, and meanwhile Comedy Central emerged as a repository for funny, but short-lived TV oddities. Then we got DVD releases even of obscure cult shows, and finally online platforms where almost anything ever produced turns up. So eventually I got to see the unaired episodes. The Zucker bros have proven that even they couldn't stay funny for long. Their 1980s run was superb IMO (Airplanes, this, Naked Gun, Top Secret), but they got progressively less funny after 1990, and unwatchable by the end of that decade. I've come to believe that almosy nobody can crank out funny material for long. Comedy is hard, and staying funny is almost impossible.

​@@75aces97 I was just thinking that...They were like comedy Kubricks that didn't have a ton of output and infrequent releases, but what they did make together was top-notch. It seemed once they started working separately was when quality stopped being the same, and probably already exhausted their best material. I never minded the reuse of gags that a lot of people wouldn't have caught the first time around, but losing the deadpan tone and turning Frank into a fool instead of the straight man was a weakness. But The Naked Gun was Citizen Kane compared to Mafia and nearly every other parody movie coming after. Glad to have gotten the good ones.

@@KalOrtPor Yes and a parody movie is still possible, but seems to be a lost art. Blazin Saddles was funny bevause it looked credibly like a Warner Bros western. Young Frankenstein looked like a classic Universal monster movie. Ehen the Zuckers made the effort to make movies that looked like disaster pictures, cold War spy thrillers, and hard boiled neo detective noir, and the actors play it straight, they were hilarious. But at some point spoofers got unspeakably lazy, down to the titles. Characters mug and pause, as if to yell, "hey everyone, isn't this shot funny?!!" No it isn't.

This show was way advanced for its time, you really had to pay attention to catch everything , people were used to basic sitcoms like Mork and Mindy or The Jeffersons where you could just zone out and watch

The funniest TV show ever aired. It had me in stitches. I eagerly tuned in five weeks in a row and was absolutely floored when it was cancelled. Why cancel a brilliant show? Apparently, it was 'too' good. (For idiots maybe.)
