Trooper's Report: I proceeded to the 216 westbound entrance ramp on Interstate #40 and waited on the vehicle at my location. At this time, Dispatch notified me that the vehicle was approaching the 216 westbound mile marker and would be a red S.U.V. I observed a red S.U.V. traveling westbound at a high rate of speed, estimated to be traveling approximately 100 miles per hour. I then proceeded westbound from the entrance ramp to get a radar lock on the vehicle and stop it. However, as I entered Interstate #40, I visually observed the red S.U.V. approximately 1⁄4 mile ahead of me aggressively passing other cars on the shoulder of the roadway. I accelerated and activated my emergency lights and audible siren to catch up and get the red S.U.V. stopped. However, the vehicle continued to drive aggressively and pass other cars, as I wasn't gaining any distance on the red S.U.V. Due to the traffic volume, I passed on the shoulder within safer interstate areas where the guardrails weren't present. However, after I realized I wasn't gaining any distance on the red S.U.V. and noticed the Highway Department was working on the shoulders of the roadway ahead of me, I refrained from passing on the shoulders for the rest of the pursuit. Troop D Dispatch notified Hazen Police Department of the pursuit, and Hazen Units set up at the 196 westbound mile marker to intercept the red S.U.V. I notified the Hazen Units that I could only tell it was a small red S.U.V. It had a red licenses plate displayed to the rear of the vehicle. When I approached the 213 westbound mile marker, I completely lost the visual of the red S.U.V. As I came to the 199 westbound rest area, I noticed a red S.U.V. similar to the one I was previously pursuing in the westbound rest area parking lot. I told the Dispatch and the Hazen Units I was going to make contact with the vehicle in the rest area; at the same time, Unit #204 with the Hazen Police Department notified Dispatch the red S.U.V. was coming by the 196 westbound mile marker and was passing on the shoulders of the roadway. I left the rest area and proceeded westbound on Interstate #40 to catch up to the Hazen Units, who were actively pursuing the red S.U.V. I could not catch up for the duration of the pursuit as it continued westbound into Troop A within Lonoke and Pulaski County. Troop A Troopers ended the pursuit with the T.V.I. maneuver around the 152-mile marker on Interstate #40. The driver (Tego Coldero) was taken into custody by the Hazen Police Department, transported to the Prairie County Jail, and will face the following charges: 5-13-204 Aggravated Assault, 5-54-125 Felony Fleeing, 5-65-103B D.W.I. Drugs. I also contacted Agent McDaniel with I.C.E.; issued a detainer on Tego Colderon for being a deported felon with an active warrant.

I don't understand why you "can't believe" it. Pursuits in Arkansas are designed that way. When city PD becomes involved in a pursuit, they notify dispatch to have ASP respond. PD maintains visual and updates location as needed so ASP knows where to respond to. Once ASP is on scene, PD drops back, ASP becomes primary unit and then ends the chase as soon as possible. ASP is highly trained in TVI/PIT, and those skills are utilized by local agencies when needed. Training costs money. The state has a bigger budget for that training, and also a bigger budget to handle lawsuits filed by recipients of the PIT.

I’m sorry, would you prefer for us to be the same as Iran, North Korea, or Russia?
@wtfdff17 Жыл бұрын
@robertcampbellii9787 I would rather the punishment fit the crime. I would rather the revolving door of the jail system come to an end. When a person puts others at significant risk, charge them accordingly. When a person causes significant property damage, charge them accordingly. If consequences were significant enough that they were feared, the risk would suddenly outweigh the reward. When they spend days or weeks in jail, it's an inconvenience more than a punishment. That gives them incentive to try to run because the risk is low if caught. Imagine if they faced 10 years for every life they put at risk, 5 years for every instance of property damage, and 1 year for every traffic offense during the commission of their felony fleeing. A person could face enough time to amount to a life sentence just for cutting off 5 cars, driving through a few yards, and running 10 red lights or stop signs during an attempt of fleeing. Then eliminate the "good time", "2 for 1 days", and "early release" systems and make their time in jail mandatory. If the sentence was severe, all the sudden the risk of running to avoid a few weeks in jail over simple possession or a minor warrant is no longer beneficial.

Trooper Grace was smart enough to let that fool pit himself which is a lot easier and all he have to do is hold his ground against the suspect's car. It was far to close to traffic but we'll done.

It’s a testament to modern safety standards in these cars that these idiots can often walk away after rolling at 80-100mph+. 30 years ago they’d either be dead or wished they were.

Kind of a shame in cases like this one though.
@mexicanspec Жыл бұрын
I think that is one of the reasons people drive much worse these days. They can crash and have basically no consequences.
@DroneStrike1776 Жыл бұрын
Rolling is actually a good thing. It's dispensing energy. You're cocooned in a barrel roll. Coming to a sudden stop is what kills. If you watch racing, especially rally racing, you can see in cam footage of rolls and how the passengers barely move vs them hitting a tree and sustain heavy g force.
@jayschafer1760 Жыл бұрын
To be able to walk away from a 100+ mph car crash and not require ANY medical attention... That's some good safety engineering, both in the car and on the highway (concrete wall/barrier on the left really did a great job of containing the car). Engineers should be dang proud.
@richardmcgowan1651 Жыл бұрын
Great to see the officers ALWAYS looking for a safe place to end the chase with a pit. With most cars now having window airbags even in a full roll over the driver will be fine.

Get ready folks .... what we've just seen is only going to get worse. In months to come, I fear this sort of thing will be commonplace ... I cringe to think of the danger to innocent lives, the cost of dealing with these people, the destruction of property and the list goes on. Multiply these incidents by who knows how many times? Thank goodness there are states that still believe in strict law enforcement .... and Arkansas is at the top of the list! Great job guys! Kudos!

Ronald took a chance in traffic that Montae wouldn't and it ended well but I can't blame Montae one bit. He handled the pursuit amazingly and tried to balance risk in a reasonable way. Good on both troopers putting this pursuit to an end. Props to the sheriff and his excellent pursuit skills as well.
@Rroff2 Жыл бұрын
Montae did an excellent job managing the risk with far too many uncooperative/slow reacting drivers. Not entirely on board with Ronald's pit but it was artfully done and he did attempt to keep his vehicle between other vehicles and danger during it. EDIT: As an aside I own one of these Nissans (with the top spec engine) for running to the shops, etc. you would not want to be running from the cops in one... the steering has a massive dead zone and is more hinting what direction you want to go than anything and it isn't exactly fast.
@michaeljanes6206 Жыл бұрын
@@Rroff2 Well said! I love the ASP, but I'm a little uneasy with that pit - though it was great! I guess Ronald determined the driver had to be stopped ASAP, driving like a madman and darting in and out of traffic and on shoulders at those high speeds. You have to weigh the risks on both sides. It's a tough decision sometimes.

@boostedsc4040 Жыл бұрын
That’s not safe for the public. Actively causing a accident with other innocent drivers around isn’t safe. Cutting through traffic to keep up with a purp that you have a description on isn’t safe. Continually going on the shoulder when In a construction zone isn’t safe. I agree they needed to stop that guy but non of that chase was safe at all especially with that amount of traffic.
