Trooper's Narrative:
On 6-28-24 at approximately 01:08am I was notified by dispatch that Madison County Sheriffs Office was in pursuit of a green
Chevrolet Silverado westbound on Hwy 412 approaching Washington County and requested our assistance. I assumed
primary in the pursuit starting at Hwy 412 near Knob Hill Loop, and Trooper Matthew Walker was secondary.
The suspect continued traveling west on Hwy 412 at approximately 100mph. I attempted several times to position my vehicle
for a tactical vehicle intervention (TVI) and the suspect would cut me off. The suspect braked checked me and turned around
on Hwy 412 near Fawn Rd and began traveling eastbound.
Trooper Walker then became primary in the pursuit, and attempted a TVI which was unsuccessful. The pursuit continued
eastbound at speeds of 110 miles per hour.
The suspect began to travel in the westbound lanes while traveling eastbound. The suspect attempted to conduct a left turn at
the intersection of Sonora Road and Hwy 412 and lost control of the vehicle colliding with a utility pole.
The suspect later exited the vehicle and began to flee on foot northbound on Sonora Road. Corporal Billy Martin attempted to
Tase the suspect, but the Taser was ineffective. Corporal Billy Martin grounded his Taser and took the suspect to the ground.
The suspect was later taken into custody without further incident.
The suspect who was identified as Berry Reynolds was transported by Madison County Sheriffs Office to the Madison County
Detention Center

@@sferg9582 Yes, good point. Statutory law typically requires the judge to set restitution to the victim of a criminal act at sentencing, if requested. The local utility co should submit a bill. And standard auto insurance contracts have an exclusion for intentional criminal conduct that causes damage to one's own or another car. It's a matter of public policy incentives not to encourage such illegal actions. No crook can think, "Hell, even if I murder someone and total a cop car, I got insurance. hehe"

This clown got lucky...See the gray, metal box mounted on the pole, facing the truck? That's a Comcast power supply. It provides the electricity for their distribution plant. If you watch carefully, you can see it coming open and spilling its contents out onto the hood of the truck when it hits the pole. Included in that box are a controller unit (which weighs 40-50 pounds and comes in a very sturdy and very hard metal case) and three batteries, each the size and weight of a regular car battery. You can see it all on the ground right in front of the trooper's car as he comes to a stop. This clown would have been in for a world of pain if that stuff came through his windshield and landed in his lap.

Please notice that the truck never exceeded 95 mph. The cop car reached about 102mph a couple of times while catching up, which by the laws of physics, is required to “catch up” in the first place. That was clearly a 1500 series GMT800 generation truck. Meaning the 5.3 liter LS engine, in a 1999-2006 full sized GM truck, which includes Silverados, Avalanches, Suburbans, Tahoes, Yukons, Escalades, etc. The 6.0 gets to about 110mph I think, but the 5.3 tops out at 95mph, even downhill, it will apply brakes regardless of your inputs, and I speak from experience. I realized this while passing a guy camped out in the left lane with a pile of traffic behind me on the interstate. This just happened to be on a downhill section, and at 95 mph, it was like I hit a wall, a VERY ODD feeling. I didn’t feel the brakes applied, but it definitely stopped accelerating, and I’m sure even the aero drag would slow it down even if “coasting” downhill. At 94Mph though, it was definitely still pulling hard. I guess GM does this to save us from ourselves. This turns out to be a platform wide limiter. The indicated speed of the police car reflects this reality. So about that description……

He's in a truck that weighs tons. It's top heavy. It's suspension and handling owes more to the horse and cart than a racing car. It steers like an oil tanker. Where does he think he's going to go? Does he really believe he will get away?

My name is Berry Reynolds, watch me outrun 7 police, even on foot and the dog is a bonus too. No wonder I can't breathe, I ran hard. You should have seen my feet pedaling my truck like a squirrel cage! Next time I need a charger. This time I'm getting charged.

A lot of those Silverados were governed to 98mph due to the driveshaft and I think that's the case here -- he never pulls away unless she's doing under 95

Note to self: my 2006 Suburban can handle a 40mph+ impact with a somewhat immovable object pretty damned well. See, I knew I was right when I told my ex- wife our daughter was much safer in the Burban than a small car. It didn’t take this to convince me, but damn, it’s nice to have evidence. To be fair, the wreck she sustained a mere four months after my ex- in-laws bought her a BRAND NEW Toyota whatever it was, I think a Tercel, could have been worse were it not for the phenomenal technology or the “pre-collision, preemptive braking” the car did before my daughter could apply the brakes. An SUv had pulled right out in front of her in the pouring rain, to which the attending officer awarded a ticket, and she later told me that the feeling of “chasing the brake pedal to the floor” was unnerving. I taught her well, and she is a damned good driver, but that incident cemented her desire to never drive a small car ever again. She only sustained bruises to her face and forearms from the airbag, thankfully, as she was only going about 30mph before braking, and likely about 15mph at impact, but the little car was trashed. The Mercedes SUv which got hit broadside may have been totaled, but it didn’t look too bad. Obviously I’m obsessed with vehicle dynamics, and the results of various impacts on these vehicles. The Burban is obviously a tank, but I had no idea how tough it really was until this video. Wow. Cool. I feel safer by the moment. Cheers. Be careful out there, and don’t play chicken with any GMT 800s, cause you’ll likely lose out.
