@@trevfindley I am saying that if you are afraid to consider conspiracy as a theory to explain events in current affairs, politics and big business - afraid because the term 'conspiracy theory' has been weaponized as a smear - then you are unlikely to ever detect conpiracy and hold people to account for it. In current affairs, politics, big buainess - anything where the stakes are high - conspiracy always has been and always will be rife. Engage your brain - who has a vested interest in conditioning the public to recoil in horror at the thought of being labelled a 'conspiracy theorist'. Conspiracy theorists are simply people that look at what is going on in the world, consider historical events etc and theorize about the likelihood of conspiracy being behind what we're seeing. And the reality is - history shows us that conspiracy is almost always going to be behind these things - to some degree or another. These potential conspiracy's are never investigated because the media engages in a massive smear campaign to ridicule the people saying - there's reason to believe something illegal happening here; we should look into it.

I read Naomi's 'This Changes Everything" and it pretty much did. I was horrified, but more importantly I discovered just how important misinformation is as a distraction, away from very real issues we face. I have friends who believe much of the theories and it's making them ill, especially in that they're constantly stressed about things that not only are not happening, but would be beyond their control anyway. I'm looking forward to reading this one to understand my friends' worlds a little better.

I remember when Naomi Klein went on Russell Brand’s Under the Skin podcast back in 2016 or 17. He kept interrupting and bombarded her with flattery that bordered on creepy. At one point she actually warned his listeners about false prophets like Brand, to his face while on his show. It was great 😂

I think after a lifetime of listening to politicians spouting this or that, ai have decided that I just want fairness. I want them to do what is right and what is fair. I want them to listen to experts and carry out strategies that will help people and the world. It is not easy to trust anyone who wants to be in power as they all seem to have an agenda of their own. ​@@trevfindley Maybe I overstated my opinion. Sociopaths aren't confined to politics; they can be found in every walk of life. Elevating a scientist's opinion above everybody else is ignorant because it is just one way of understanding the world around us, and it has its limitations. One issue can be a narrow perspective, as it focuses on empirical evidence and observable phenomena. While this approach is valuable for understanding some aspects of the world, it doesn't encompass all aspects of the human experience, such as ethics, emotions, and personal beliefs. Ignoring these dimensions can lead to a narrow and incomplete understanding of complex issues. There are other reasons, like bias and subjectivity, because scientists are just people, and people have beliefs that can influence their work. Without these considerations, you can't make well-informed decisions and solve complex issues, and it can hinder the development of holistic solutions.

I agree that a pure technocracy where the scientists are above everyone else would be just as bad as what we have now, but I can see the value in having some kind of expert panel to assess or verify the claims of politicians, and guide their policies. The reason we see people like Russel Brand get so much attention is because mainstream media have been failing and are failing to provide us with a somewhat correct presentation of what is going on. It has likely always been like this. SOME have provided people with the opportunity to share their ideas and interpretations. I'm 60 years old. It's only recently that I've realized that democracy has always been a bit of a sham. An 'illusion' to keep the workforce compliant. It was always fairly safe to give people a vote - it was always a bit of a Hobson's choice, and the media (called the 'free press' but actually easily controled by the establishment) could fairly reliably control how people voted. Too much interest in 'lose cannons' such as Farage, Corbyn and the media could easily demonize them. Then Brexit happened - the unthinkable. The people were given the vote on the understanding that the media could make sure they voted 'the right way' - but they voted the 'wrong' way. What to do? Deliver Brexit (which the establishment didn't want to do at any cost), or allow the illusion of democracy to shatter. As you say - is it a good thing? I think we're now seeing the world for what it is. But does that knowledge change anything? I would say not - those that 'think the wrong way' are demonized...criminalized even. Those that say the wrong things are deplatformed. I think people had more levers when most of us believed the lie - they had a vested interest in keeping the illusion alive. Now that most realize the truth - there's less need for them to put up a pretence. So where does that leave us? Facing full blown authoritarianism? Not much point in knowing the truth (or rather having more information) if you're powerless to use it to make life better for your children.

This issue is hardly about some kind of 'mainstream media' monopoly, which to me is a misappropriated catchphrase form the far-right like 'woke' or 'cancel culture' . The problem is when every apparent falsehood which regards itself as an alternative (fact) source is treated on an equitable level as actual truth, without anyone caring or having the strength to say "no, that is not what happened" or "no, that is not what that word means."

​@@ornatus9616 Are you saying you trust Russell Brand, a guy with (at best) very surface level understanding of the topics he discusses, over scientists because governments provide funding for scientific research? Are you saying scientists don't evaluate quality of evidence, and that an assessment of the quality, or lack thereof, doesn't factor into their deliberations? Because those assessments absolutely are factored in and accounted for. I certainly trust the intellectual rigour and integrity of the broader scientific community over Russell Brand and his ilk. As to funding for research affecting conclusions, I'm not saying this is you, but a lot of Russell's fans seem to forget that he himself has very strong financial motivations steering his output. He knows what his audience wants to hear, and he knows what subjects will get the most views, and make the most money. All the conspiracy type content he makes is much more financially beneficial for him than his wellness/spirituality content. He's fully aware that if he made a video talking even slightly positively about Covid 19 vaccines, he'd probably lose half his subs within a week.

I've heard comedians say his behaviour has been an open secret for years, and that it was only a matter of time. Yeah, I honestly don't understand people's obsession with Kermit Lobsterson. When he wrote 12 rules I thought he was okay. It's nothing a good parent or mentor wouldn't teach you, but it was a fine common sense philosophy for life. Now, I’m a fan of JOE content - and Naomi Klein’s ‘The Shock Doctrine’ realigned the way I viewed the world; I’m a great admirer of her commentary. So I saw this, and was interested in her take on the Russell Brand... Issue let’s call it. And of course, JOE comes across as this warm, non-corporate (it isn’t, read to the end), touchy-feely, left-wing online news channel. And Oli Dugmore, bless him, with his unbranded casual clothing and that kind of deferential, non-threatening, just-chilling-with-my-uni-flatmates image - he’s like a young-intellectual-activist-woman’s Dermot O’Leary isn’t he? And I’m not knocking him.. But WTF was that KZbin clickbait interview all about!? Spoiler alert: THE INTERVIEW IS NOT ABOUT RUSSELL BRAND INDULGING CONSPIRACY CULTURE. In fact, the first 40 seconds of the video front-loads literally everything Klein has to say about Brand throughout the whole interview. I think she only mentions his name once. No, this is Klein talking about her book. So why the clickbait headline? When this pops up on KZbin, you see a big main image with Ms. Klein on the right of the screen, and on the left, underneath the big heading - “THIS IS A MASSIVE INDUSTRY” - you’ve got a carefully selected shot of Russell Brand looking like some kind of cult magician about to wave a Jedi spell over his followers. The title of the video is ‘How Russell Brand indulges conspiracy culture’ - a pretty self-proclaiming title - but then, in the 53 minutes and 6 seconds of content, Ms. Klein never brings him up. In fact, she doesn't even mention him until prompted to after 35 minutes when he’s awkwardly and erroneously segued in as “one of [Klein’s] doppelganger’s fellow travellers who also inhabits this mirror world ... at one point like Wolf, darling of the left and mainstream media. Now he faces very, very serious accusations of rape and sexual assault”. Eh!? How does that make Brand and Wolf similar? Oli forges ahead (35 minutes in - he’s got to get this interview to match the heading somehow) - “let’s talk about him” he insists. “Must we” Klein replies. It sounds like a Freudian slip indicating that she doesn’t really know that much about Brand, doesn’t really care about who he is, and would prefer to talk about her new book and the people that she does know about - and indeed spends most of the interview talking about - Steve Bannon, Donald Trump, and her ‘doppleganger’ Naomi Wolf. But Oli has been briefed (I assume) so he ploughs on with a couple of leading and positioning adjuncts to his questions as to whether Brand is a conspiracy theory “grifter”. But this is a false start, because immediately Klein shifts the discussion to Trump... hahaha!!! It’s sooooo obvious that she really does not want to talk about Russell Brand, but Oli has a job to do... There’s another five minutes of Naomi Klein NOT talking about Russell Brand before Oli desperately shoehorn’s him into the discussion again - this time aligning him with Donald Trump (Really! That’s stretching it Oli mate). It doesn’t work, so he tries again a few minutes later, this time pegging him onto an association with Naomi Wolf - eventually Klein bites. So after almost 45 minutes of a 53 minute video interview entitled ‘How Russell Brand indulges conspiracy culture’, Naomi Klein tenuously references him in the topic of discussion - which is basically that entire 40 seconds you saw at the start of the interview. Throughout this interview, Russell Brand’s name is mentioned about half a dozen times, and I think Naomi Klein utters it once. So why the big Brand headline? Why the big push to tar Brand as a conspiracy theorist “grifter”? The irony is that this interview is all about conspiracy theories, then you have an entire interview produced by a branch of a media outlet (one of Brand's typical targets is the 'mainstream' media) that has contrived to, yet woefully failed, to achieve its title’s objective of proving ‘How Russell Brand indulges conspiracy culture’. Well, let’s take a look at the touchy, feeling, lefty, independent-looking JoePolitics to get some context about where it lies in the media landscape. PoliticsJoe is part of the Joe Media Group, which is a subsidiary of Greencastle Media Group and Greencastle Capital (based in Dublin), which are in turn subsidiaries of Linton Capital LLP, a UK investment firm based in Richmond Mews in a swanky part of West London. Both are owned and controlled by ex-rugby player David Sefton, a clever fellow who very likely rubbed shoulders with the elites of parliament whilst studying at Oxford no less. Linton Capital is "a private equity firm based in London, United Kingdom. The firm prefers to invest through means of buyouts and acquisitions ... in the energy, technology, and media sectors” - doesn't sound so wokey, lefty, touchy-feely does it? Greencastle Media Group has been established specifically to invest in digital and social media brands, technology and publishers, and is owned and managed by both David Sefton and Paul O’Donohoe. On LinkedIn their overview states that they ‘act as a conduit - connecting brands to our highly engaged communities that span men’s lifestyle, politics, culture, women’s lifestyle, sport and entertainment. Elevating brand engagement through original, insight driven solutions that form authentic affiliations. Using our centralised business functions, we work with brands from strategy through to creative delivery, cutting through the noise to elevate content and unleash the power of your brand by turning trends into commercial success.’ I have no truck with capitalism in general, but again, that doesn't really align with the touchy-feely lefty ideology of Joe. In short, Joe Media is worth millions (their IPO in 2022 was valued at €25 million). Thank you for this post. Sad that so few have read it. They’d rather keep their blinders on. Funny how almost every media outlet, big to very small indies have a similar family tree. This is true of the majority of companies these days, including beloved brands sold multiple times and finally resold to private equity then gutted.

Thank you for this; I wonder how much Klein is worth? In her disdain for any opposing narratives, Klein is in danger of becoming all that she criticises: a totalitarian dictator, who favours her 'in-group' and mocks her out-group: anyone that disagrees with her, including nature, personal choice, freedom of speech, and bodily autonomy. There was a moment where she gave an example of a nature loving yogi, that sounded questionable. In her example, Klein claimed that the yogi chose to trust in her immune system, rather than f@rma, and allegedly said that those with weak immune systems should dye. Not only does this sound off key (like BS); but even if it were true, how can anyone base their premise on one person's response, to her husbands door to door campaign? This whole left and right political debate is slowly morphing into a parody. It's like favouring your left hemisphere over your right hemisphere, or favouring your right hand over your left. We need both. Schrödinger's cat and our own self importance, aside, nature can function pretty well without our input and we would do well to learn a thing or two, by following Her example. There are so many elements about life that we do not and cannot understand, no matter how many models and theories we propose. Or how many test tubes we propagate with life. We are the only species that thinks we can do better than the miracle of life, and that damaging nature is progress, but damaging buildings is vandalism. We take it upon ourselves to interfere, from GMO's to sterilising animals, and sterilising ourselves. The same people who criticise Russell Brand for dating a sixteen year old (bare in mind that the legal age in the uk is 16), will also tell you that a four year can decide to begin the journey of identity change by taking puberty blockers, and self sterilisation (self mutilation). This is the first time in life where you cannot question political narratives, and in so doing, you can be silenced, lose your financial means, ridiculed and ostracised. What has happened to innocent until proven guilty? Or to our fundamental human rights? Or to having our own opinion on something; when did it become a crime to disagree? You have no right to scapegoat someone because they have erred from the norm. What is the norm today, will be not be the norm tomorrow.

This book is going to be my christmas read this year. I'm quite ashamed to admit I did get the Naomi streams crossed for a bit myself, never having read either author directly at their source but more piecemeal through their various other media work. This is a very troubling phenomena to me, one that has really gained a head of steam since the pandemic. It's going to be fascinating to see how Naomi Klein tackles it both from a more narrow personal perspective and in the more broad intellectual terms she's known for. I'll just say this very subjective and fanciful thing - there's a righteous tone we can hear sometimes, and I believe Naomi Klein transmits it very cleanly. I cannot imagine her falling off any lofty perch. My keen sense is that she is a safe pair of hands, a mind we can tap into and be better for it.

I had a friend who started to get sucked in during Covid. I hate to admit it, but we're no longer friends. Her whole way of thinking became so defensive, difficult & irrational that it was difficult to hold a conversation with her. She isolated herself & that was it. She was gone. I think the hardest part about people who believe in all of this is that they're victims of manipulation & exploitation but they call anyone & everyone who try to help them as "sheep" when it's them who are the sheep. I think we have the same friend. One of mine friends got sucked into the anti-vaccine conspiracy. Then it was the anti-press conspiracy. Now, she's a hardcore defender of Brand and won't read or watch anything he doesn't put on his channel. She absolutely cannot stop trying to recruit anyone who doesn't agree 100 per cent with her. I hadn't been paying much attention to Russell Brand until this current controversy, because I felt he'd disappeared down the rabbit hole of conspiracy culture. But just over the last week since following his recent output, I'm increasingly impressed with his insights, and also that he backs up what he's saying with evidence. I actually think his views of what is needed to bring about change are similar to what Naomi is advocating - people feeling connected by a common humanity and coming together to form a grass roots coalition of decentralised power, that transcends these divisions of left versus right. I also think it's fair comment to say he's indulging conspiracy culture with his use of emotive language and framing of his material, but I think that's in order to engage with the people who have been drawn into that world, to encourage them to question things, and also expose the way that capitalism functions, which Naomi was talking about. I agreed with what she says that these kind of influencers are filling a void, but I feel in Russell Brand's case there is a genuine empathy, because of his own struggles, and a humanitarian vision, that is lacking in a mainstream media controlled by commercial and vested interests.

He thought he might be able to come back on his own terms… if he became, a big enough internet phenomenon. But this latest attack has reminded those in the ( UK ) entertainment industry, that he’s too much of a risk. I’m immune-compromised and I am a NYer. But I lived in the hippie/wellness/eastern spiritual/fitness Mecca of Boulder, CO for 13 years. I’ve never heard anyone from that Boulder culture express conservative, much less fascist ideology or say anything remotely like “those people should die.” I’ve only heard that type of talk from NYers. If she heard that from a natural wellness person, that would surely be an extreme outlier of an anecdote. As a middle class academic I can tell you what was bothering me during Covid was nothing to do with mask wearing or birdsong. It was how the hell we were going to deliver a quality education to hundreds of fee-paying students who were being shunted around the country and across continents through no fault of their own. It was translating lecture room and lab based courses to online delivery using flaky unfamiliar platforms. It was keeping the morale of our staff up during all of this adversity. And, you know what, we pulled it off, and so did millions of others delivering education and (more importantly) health services.

I had to do a family visit to Totnes in the 1990s and I have to say that it was, even then, an uneasy mix of lefties (of whom I am one) and the adherents of superstitious belief systems that were fuelled by crop circles and crystals. My opinion is that neo-liberalism is not providing answers because we are witnessing the death of religion in western societies and there are, regrettably, a great many magical thinkers who have adopted quasi religious, cultish belief systems to replace traditional religions. Our education system is failing to address this problem by raising the quality of scientific knowledge across a wide enough social demographic. Too many poor people are not receiving the quality of education that is required in the modern world. And I wish people like Naomi Klein would not apologise for their learning and intelligence by describing their work as 'nerdy'.

I found it very interesting that Naomi Klein picked up on those same trends that I've been observing in my immediate social surroundings. What you mentioned, there are many magical thinkers. These are not people who subscribe to any political ideology. To the contrary: many of them don't even vote. They don't have any political ideology, which defaults to being on board with neoliberalism. And many of them never read any books, some don't even watch movies. And they emphasize "healthy living" A LOT, eating raw vegetables all the time. I understand it as a type of "apolitical" (i.e. politically centrist) anti-intellectualism that I've come to hate so much in people. I actually have a bigger problem with those types of people than with overtly political ideologues who are on the opposite end of the political spectrum from me; because while those latter people are my political enemies, at least I see eye to eye with them as far as a fundamental sense for the importance of political action goes. Even a MAGA-hat is in that limited sense closer to me than those apolitical, anti-intellectual drifters.

So when you take into account he is a self professed narcissist, it makes sense. So he enjoys fame, comedy, movies and public debate. He moved onto KZbin he was this spiritual guru and he felt safe to listen to. So he attracted people who were probably vulnerable and wanted to heal. But then his content became slowly more and more paranoid. Because his content is attractive to uneducated, scared, probably lonely people his prey is also similar to a classic cult leader. Even the way he speaks is seductive, his vocabulary makes his viewers feel smarter for watching him while also making him look really intelligent. I won’t lie there was a stage during his spiritual phase where I enjoyed watching him, but a part of knew he was narcissistic by the way he carried on. Then he also publicly stated he was. It's impossible for the individual to become knowledgeable enough about all subjects of human interest for it to be responsible to ignore expert opinion. You might think you know as much or more than a virologist about viruses or a geologist about plate tectonics, but you don't. Experts are not perfect, and nobody claims they are, and the degree to which we trust experts does depend to a significant degree on the field in which they are experts, but the tendency to reject expertise tout court is irrational and will lead to very poor decision making.

That said, I am no car mechanic, electrician, surgeon, dentist, black smith... to name but a few. It's undeniable that there are trades people and professionals that are 'skilled' in their field. But this does not make them 100% right, infallible, or incorruptible. There are always several options and several opinions on the same thing. People get things wrong; people differ in their constitution; their needs, their reactions; there is variance, etc. As for virologists, I did not read a single paper from an independent source, and you would be well advised to do some research before you encourage me to go against my own judgement; which at the end of the day, is all we all have. ( Hello my six million awakening wonders! ) He’s now stuck ( proverbially ) between a rock and hard place. He wants to go back into the mainstream media world. He thought he might be able to come back on his own terms… if he became, a big enough internet phenomenon. But this latest attack has reminded those in the ( UK ) entertainment industry, that he’s too much of a risk. He can now only go state-side and hope a US rightwing company, will offer him a large enough contract. That, or try to attain his original goal of becoming ‘Joe Rogan famous’ on his own merits.
