Well, in fairness, I have seen plenty of interviews that sound like this. Ministers, especially Junior ministers, will often answer one-to-one interviews with this technique because they know the reporter will report what they said because it is the *only* thing they said. But what Liz Truss doesn't seem to have grasped is that doesn't work in a live Press Conference setting when you're Prime Minister - because loads of people are watching and it looks weird as heck.

Once you know how “media training” works, you see what she is doing. You pick a few points (“the message”)you want to get across in the session, and simply use any question thrown at you as an opportunity to broadcast your message. Only this isn’t a casual and polite interview, this is serious. Media training isn’t going to help you when you have a real questions with real consequences requiring real specific answers.
