The lyrics were principally written by Gilmour's wife, writer Polly Samson. On an Island is the third solo studio album by Pink Floyd member David Gilmour. Much of the album was recorded in Gilmour's private studio aboard his houseboat Astoria. Peace out. Peace out.

I had the great fortune to be at that concert in London’s Royal Albert Hall. It was an amazing night. The musicians on stage are all just amazing. Not only do you have two thirds of the legendary group Crosby stills and Nash on stage, but you also have Rick Wright from pink Floyd on keyboards, Phil Manzanera from Roxy Music on guitar, Guy Pratt on bass who has worked with Pink Floyd, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Gary Moore, The Smiths, Roxy Music, Iggy Pop, Tom Jones, and many many others. Then we have Jon Carin on keyboards, who has worked with Pink Floyd, Brian Ferry, Kate Bush, The Who, Roger Waters and many more. And Steve DiStanislao on drums, who has toured with David Crosby, and Don Felder (ex the eagles). It really is testament to how respected David Gilmour is, that he was able to put together a whole tour with those musicians, not just a single night. And it was a long musty date tour taking in some of the most iconic venues across Europe.

Crosby and Nash from the band Crosby, Stills, Nash and then Neil Young joined. Gilmore is and always will be next level for me and for many others. Genius level guitar playing. The way he can get his guitars to convey emotion has always been incredible. For me, whenever I work out, it’s got to be jazz. It just puts my mind at ease. Great reaction to this song Polo.

@@ozzyzak Durga McBroom has stated that even though Gilmour considers himself a guitarist that can sing, he puts almost as much effort into perfecting his vocals as he does his guitar. Truly a master at his craft.

To my thinking there were 3 phases to PF. Phase 1 was the Syd Barrett years where he was a strong writer and was lead guitar. His drug use led the band to invite Gilmore into the fold as backup. They had to eventually gently phase Barrett out and Gilmore took over guitar and many vocals as lead. I disliked this phase. Next was the Roger Waters phase. He wrote most of the songs and was a co-lead in vocals with Gilmour. Following the Wall, one could say he got a big head and began being the primary lyricist and took creative control, the rest of the band admitted they didn't have any lyrics to contribute. Waters also tired Richard Wright during his reign. His final album for PF was basically his solo album and tensions were high. He eventually quit and stated to the world that PF was over. Gilmour and Nick Mason disagreed. I liked only Dark Side of the Moon from this era. This started the Gilmour phase which consisted of three studio albums (Momentary Lapse of Reason, The Division Bell and Endless River. They also had two monster world tour resulting in the albums Delicate Sound of Thunder and Pulse). This was the phase I became a fan of PF and loved it!

This is likely my favorite song off this album. As always, David paints a picture with his music. I have a feeling of warmth and family when I hear this. Polly, his wife, has written/co-written most of the lyrics for the past 25-30 years. I love that David Crosby and Graham Nash lent their harmonies to this song. David’s voice is still strong after all these years-pretty amazing!

Love Dave Gilmour so much. My dad was an animator on a lot of Pink Floyd's stuff in the 70s (Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, The Wall). Mum never really loved Pink Floyd though (despite having otherwise great musical taste) until she watched this concert and particularly song. She literally turned to me with a "OK, I was wrong, that was brilliant" look on her face, like I hadn't just seen her spend an hour totally enraptured.

I've been captivated by Floyd/David Gilmour music for 45+ years now, and I can honestly say that this is my favorite album of all, whether as a group or solo. Yeah, it's that good. In addition to the tremendous songwriting and elite level musicianship throughout, there's an overriding sense of a man who has come to terms with his place in this world yet is very much at peace with his life and has a great appreciation for all the blessings therein. Do yourself a favor and listen to this entire album, preferably on or near a body of water on a beautiful day, perhaps enjoying an adult beverage or two ;-)

The guitar David's playing in this song is the black strat that he sold in 2019 at an auction for charity! He sold 120 of his guitars and amassed a sum of 23 million for charity and that one black strat sold for just under 4 million dollars which was the record at the time! Also it doesn't hurt when your backup singers are from a group who have sold over 70 million albums themselves!! That group is Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Here you have David Crosby and Graham Nash! A group known for their incredible harmonies!

Hi. You asked in a previous reaction, "High Hopes", whether there was any instrument which David Gilmour can't play. Well from this same concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London I give you "Red Sky At Night" featuring David on Sax. Truly beautiful, David seems to have his own unique sound on any instrument he chooses to pick up. Also well worth watching from this concert "Remember that Night" is the version of "Comfortably Numb" featuring David Bowie where Bowie, like all great artists, truly makes the song his own. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fprPmoqLnZ6dkJI

After the 1994 Pink Floyd album 'The Division bell' and massive tour... David Gilmour had come to a consensus w/ (the late) Rick Wright and Nick Mason that Pink Floyd should come to rest... There was no official announcement that Pink Floyd was over; fans waited for a new album or tour, but nothing happened by 2000... former bassist Roger Waters was back on tour playing Floyd songs in concert. David Gilmour had released 2 solo albums (self-titled in 1978... and 'About face' in 1984) and neither were commercial hits at the time... Gilmour announced plans to reunite Pink Floyd in 1986 - he felt that he was too old to "restart his career". Pink Floyd reunited w/ Roger Waters to play their final show for charity in 2005 - the Live 8 concert. After a long absence, David Gilmour announced his 3rd solo album 'On an island' in 2006 using the same musicians on Floyd's 'The Division bell' album (Floyd keyboardist Rick Wright also contributed and played in his live band) and wife Polly Ann Samson contributed the lyrics... the album was a success (#1 in the UK, #6 in the US charts) and the tour was a huge success as well... Gilmour released a live album 'Live in Gdansk' in 2008... it would be the last live recordings w/ Rick Wright (who passed away in 2008). Gilmour returned w/ a 4th solo album 'Rattle that lock' in 2015, and it was different from Pink Floyd's somber style... Gilmour launched another massive tour in support of the album and released 'Live at Pompeii' in2017 (Where Pink Floyd had filmed a set in 1972)
